Al Golden and the Defensive Staff

Seattle's defense has a few similarities to what I imagine our defense when ran properly is supposed to look like. They do line up in the 4-3 primarily but they have 3-4 personel which allows them to be "multiple" and we all know how many times Golden has mentioned that he wants to be multiple on defense, Seattle's defense is so good, and so aggressive that it is really difficult to see but I believe that we are already trying to have a defense like Seattle's we just arent there yet.

Currently, we are not trying to have a defense like Seattle's.

“We want to be an attacking, aggressive football team,” he said at another clinic. “We don’t want to sit and read the play like you often have to with two-gap principles of play.”

And what is easier to learn, what Seattle does or what our corches try and teach... smh.

it's impressive to watch those guys play zone.. that hit kam chancellor put on welker, right after carrying the other receiver up the seam and handing him off when he saw welker coming across.. that's what we "should" be doing.

Yes. It also helped Kam that the DL was in position to make Manning decide quicker. If he passes off J. Thomas and drops to Welker, but Manning is sitting in the pocket comfortably, he has an extra tick to see Thomas coming open across the middle.

The Seattle defense works because everyone is, as their players themselves admit, tied together.

Which is what i feel we're striving for, granted, the talent needs to be there (especially the DL)... I don't think people understand how having a solid front 4 can improve our defense substantially. it just wasn't going to happen with shannon's last two classes being the leaders of the D.

My position is that, yes, our front 4 has not been very talented. But, no, they are not as insanely bad as they have looked sometimes either. The consistent response has been "hey, Renfrow was a backup elsewhere and came here and got major minutes." My counter to that is that his skill set (NT), albeit subpar to what we need, was a desperate need for what we are asking of our DL.

I am still holding out hope that Golden makes an adjustment to our style of play up front.

Al Golden and his defensive staff need to board an airplane for Seattle and sit down and learn from Pete Carrol and his defensive staff. This is how UM used to play defense under JJ and under Coker in 2000-2001.

If there was only some sort of staffer at UM that had a close personal family like relationship with Pete Carroll

Do you have any reason to hope that we'll make a change other than how bad our D has been the last two years? Have you been given any indication that Golden is even considering adjusting the style of play?

Golden has shown a practical nature off the field, so I'll take that, stir it, add in the fact that I've obsessively followed this program since I'm 5 years old, throw in limes and frog legs, stir it again, and hope we come up with something.

Getting a little tired of people pointing to one of the best defenses in recent history and telling a college coach, that deals with constant roster overturn, to emulate that.

It's just ******* stupid.

Be like the best professional defense on the planet? Groundbreaking.

We want to emulate the mindset, we know we won't duplicate a top D in 1 year. The mindset change would be huge though.

Love Seattle's defense. It isn't a college style defense though, Carroll even said it himself. Said it was too tough. Everyone has to be able to 1-Gap and 2-Gap along the DL. They play alot of combo looks with their guys in the box.

That said, playing aggressive press coverage, and getting after the passer are things the Canes could do.

If he doesn't I feel like he's signing his own termination notice.

Of course. Two of the best defenses in pro football (SEA and SF) are also actually pretty basic. Take advantage of what you have and let them be comfortable. I have destroyed our defense for that exact reason. Makes ZERO sense to overcomplicate things when our guys struggle with the basics. Just let them play and stop thinking, it immediately changes the mindset. If you know exactly what you are supposed to do on defense, you suddenly appear more aggressive and confident. It's so ******* simple it blows my mind.

This defense is better suited as a 4-3 with McCord and Muhammad at de. They can get after the passer and will be better in run support. In the current scheme they're out of position a lot and covering wr's.

It's not complete foolishness to have some faith in next years D. There's some good parts to it. Yes DT is terrifying but the pass rush showed flashes last year, and it was mostly young guys. Bush being at full strength will help because IMO, he was our best blitzer. McCord and Muhammed are destined to do big things, just not sure where they are at just yet. Pass rush changes everything, and masks a lot. Pass rush + legit secondary......well there's some hope. A real cooridinator could do some really good things despite our weaknesses. We will see.

Not sure Doritos has what it takes to make the changes.

Just saying we will be better by default. Beyond that, it's up to the guy in charge to decide just how good we will be.

For us to be better by default, Earl Moore cannot be the dude who plays Porter's 2013 position. It just won't work. Anyone know if Michael Wyche needs a paper written or for me to make index cards? We can help.

when we've done that, with our current front 4, we get waxed, just like we do with basically anything else we try.. I this point, i'm inclined to believe the jimmy's and joe's have more to do with it than the x's and o's..

Besides that, our defense can't be sooo complex that temple kids were able to pick it up, but ours can't.

Even still, he can't play every series and God forbid he has to miss game time due to an injuiy. We don't have a capable nose behind him.
