I'm sick about this. We can't win play to play but Richards had the potential to steal a big play or several.
He might be the best player on the team when right. I have no idea how anyone can underplay this. The only road game I attended this season was Duke. It was also the only game Richards looked close to healthy. He toyed with Duke and the athletic arrogance was a joy to watch. That game looked like Richards from 2016 plus a jolt of confidence.
Obviously that form did not carry over. Richards was never on the same page with Rosier. During the Notre Dame game Rosier seemingly had no trouble connecting with anyone else but he had no idea what to expect from Richards. I was always convinced Richards was making the proper reads but Rosier was butchering matters. But instead of taking it in stride Richards got obviously irritated and was pulled from the game in the second quarter. I'm not sure he ever returned. That was probably discussed around here.
He's a tenacious blocker. We need that type of thing to balance the physical pecking order against Clemson. In 2015 one of the standout aspects of that game was how they mauled us in every facet of the game, including a wide receiver lifting and planting Artie Burns on his *** during a downfield block. I guarantee Richards and other Canes receivers have seen that play and were eager to mirror it.
