Interesting post with many things to think about. In my old age I go back to the era when we were practically invincible and think about what got us there. The coaches (Schnelly, Jimmy and Butch) were looking for players that had talent but that also had an edge. They went into some areas where others wouldn't dare to tread to find talented players who were tough as nails. Many of them were not what we would call "nice" boys. They were raw and took their pleasure form being able to legitimately knock the sh*t out of someone.
Football, to them, was more than a game. It was legalized battle.....and they took no prisoners. And for all that they also demonstrated something we haven't seen in the Canes for too many years now....They had HEART! When I was a young man playing sports we had a saying for team mates who didn't give 100+ effort and that was "their hearts pump sh*t". Too many of the current canes fall into that category. Unfortunately NO coach can instill HEART in a player. He either has it or he don't and if he don't then he needs to go.
