A note on Portal QBs

Hindsight is always 20/20. Most people didn’t think he can do this and the system in Indiana played a big role in his success. I give our staff a pass for this one.

Cam Ward - 10-2 last year
Carson Beck - 10-2 this year
Fernando Mendoza (likely) - 10-2 this year

Like it or not, we opened the year with some question marks at WR. Obviously, we answered a lot of questions, but we also had a few setbacks (injuries, weed-smoking in a car, etc.).

The point is, we really opened the playbook later in the year. We likely struggle with Louisville (at that point in the season) no matter who is QB, due to conservative playcalling. So sub one more loss for any other game on the schedule (assuming we beat SMU with Mendoza).

But imagine the tears if we signed him and turned his College career around...
You only take him on a discount. Can’t pay out the *** for potential. If he isn’t just looking for a money grab in the portal but to be developed and willing to work to get better, not expecting to start then that’s good. Sign him up let him compete with Coleman and Nickel for 2027. I don’t think that’s going to be his mindset though. Expect him to go to NC State or some other mid tier P4 team trying to make a splash or replace their recently defected QB

Think we kick the tires here to see, but he’s just too much like TVD for me to be sold.

On 2 conditions:

1. He loses 10 to 15 pounds.

2. We run more power spread.

Bonus: We find a WR who can take the top off.

I think Lagway can be good with Dawson. Dawson seems like he does better with QBs who can move. ( ala Tune and Ward). He throws a beautiful deep ball. I think he is in a bad offense.

I got mad respect for you, brother. But Mendoza was not a "game manager" at Cal, he was just a frosh/soph on a bad team with not enough talent on offense.

You can go back and pull my posts from a year ago. I knew Mendoza would play a lot better outside of Cal.
Why you mad bro? Kidding

I'll be the first to say he was lacking talent at Cal. I too thought he would do better elsewhere. I did not expect an undefeated Heisman season. I can't imagine any honest fan did. I used "game manager" because I think he lacks (elite) arm talent and he's awkward, athletically speaking. I saw a couple of long TD passes in that Cal game last year that were short throws that the receiver busted (pause). I saw the drive at the end of the Penn State game where Mendoza's WR's made a couple unbelievable catches. Now is that game managing, luck, better talent around him or something else?

He was hardly a highlight reel against Ohio State. I did not watch the Oregon game close enough to comment intelligently (which I'm not so sure I'm capable of had I watched the game, but that's another story), but the stats suggest he did not win the game for the team. I think one of the more fair comparisons has been to Dorsey. Was Dorsey a game manager? Not really. So I guess from that angle, I can see the pushback. If "game manager" isn't the right term, what is?

Side Note / Honest Admission - I thought Joey Harrington would be good in the pros and I thought Josh Allen would suck in the pros. Obviously I was way off the mark on both. I was right about Akili Smith, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, and a whole lot more. Just keeping it real.

do you think Mendoza was at the same point on the learning curve as Cam and Beck? To me there was a HUGE difference
To me his situation was more similar to Cams then Beck…both QBs Looking to improve their stock & situations from being @ bum *** schools by transferring to much better programs..Cam was just wayy more naturally talented then Mendoza but Mendoza was no slouch in his own right you could see his potential at CAL hence y Cignetti pursued him.

We didn’t lose that Louisville game because of conservative playcalling tho…..
