A note on Portal QBs

If I remember correctly, some people in the know said his dad was annoying throughout the process. Some of the demands were unrealistic. Also, not sure if Mendoza — as good of a player as he is — would have meshed well with our lockeroom. Beck seemed like more of a natural fit, in my opinion.
Sounds like his dad knew what he doing then. Everything appears to have worked to plan and he ended up at the right spot for him

Why?
First, your comment assumes Mendoza wanted to come here. Did Mario actually turn him down? Or did you make that up? Secondly, did you actually watch him play last year? He was a game manager; not elite. Far too many people are making claims like you did and it’s nothing more than playing the result.
I know for a fact that Mendoza wanted to come here.

Simple. We chose Beck over Mendoza

And why not?
One QB was a three year starter at a big-time program where he played with and against elite competition and fared well, whereas the other guy did OK, but not great at a program struggling to win in a shthole conference.
Which QB would you choose?
Which QB would have Cignetti chosen if he would have had the choice?
Honestly, I was ok if we had ended up with Mendoza but I would be lying if I knew he was going to be this good.
I do know a lot of folks had major concerns over the possibility of having Mendoza at UM. We were hearing alot of stuff about Mario and the Columbus bros, fizical football and the other silly stuff.
Sometimes we cannot do anything right per our fan-base.

Fernando Mendoza said it himself during one of his mid-season sit-down interviews that he wanted to be a Cane but things with IU heated up quickly and he "couldn't wait around" (paraphrasing).

will try and dig up and timestamp said interview
He was a backup plan that didn’t want to wait it out which is understandable .
