A notable improvement on OL

The team is a disappointment and we need a new head coach, but I wanted to highlight the team's improvement in pass blocking. Coach Justice and the players (most of whom are back in 2022) have come a long way. Below is our ranking in sack percentage, which is the percentage of dropbacks that end in sacks. The actual percentage is in parenthesis. We hung around the 80s, bottomed out in Manny's first year with no experienced OL, and now are solid at 46th.

2017- 85th (6.86%)
2018- 78th (7.14%)
2019- 122nd (11.06%)
2020- 82nd (7.32%)
2021- 46th (5.78%)

For comparison, our old friend Stacey Searels is 124th.
Having two players named All-ACC helps as well.

That also includes having some key OL out for extended periods of time with injury, making it even more impressive

They run RPO all the time with Van Dyke. Probably 10 times a game or more. RPO is not the same thing as a zone read and it has nothing to do with the QB running the ball. Run/Pass Option means the quarterback holds the ball out to hand to the running back and either hands it off or pulls it back and throws it depending on what certain defenders do. It looks like a play action pass except the offensive line always run blocks. 99% of the time when you see an illegal receiver downfield penalty, it’s an offensive lineman who was run blocking too far downfield on an RPO pass play. If the quarterback pulls the ball back to throw, he has to do it quickly before the linemen get more than 3 yards past the line of scrimmage, otherwise it’s an illegal play.
Glad I scrolled down because I was gonna post this exact thing.. You can post this 100x and same guy will post next week what he post.. We been fighting the good fight for yearsss @CanesAreAble

Watch Garin actually say we run MORE RPO with TVD. Time at 1:55 mark @nvlahos

Our pass blocking improved when we got a Quarterback that wasnt back there running around in circles. Its real easy for a front full of D1 athletes to protect a pocket guy. Nothing against dual threat QB's but they bring the pressure on themselves especially when read 1 isnt there

The rushing OL blocking though…

To be fair, the scheme and lack of creativity did our run game no service.

TVD is Top 10 nationally in yards per attempt. We throw downfield a lot.
TVD is about 5 national interviews from getting the Rex Grossman / Kissing Suzy Kolber Treatment. TVD can't be the *** Cannon, but he certainly seems to say **** it I'm Going Deep when the pocket breaks down.

Most of the time, I just ignore the people who don't know the difference between zone read and RPO but every once in a while, I just can't help but try to explain. It's futile.

Huge deal when teams have to defend every throw. I love King, but there was stuff you knew you didn't have to defend.
I did as well. I loved his heart, leadership, and competitiveness. However, when teams know you can't attack parts of the field, and even if you do your WRs will probably drop the ball, it makes it really hard on an OL to do anything.

Correct. This is not a dink and dunk offense that throws thirty screens a game. Miami runs a ton of vertical routes. The reason why Knighton rarely left the field until the last few games of the season was because they rely on a running back to stay in and pass protect on vertical routes a lot. If Franklin and Brown missed pass blocking assignments, the offense would have been dead in the water and TVD would have been sacked a lot more.
Yeah, it turned out that TVD actually isn't a game manager as we heard after the scrimmages

I think some of that "game manager" talk might have been because he was running the O that was suited for King, in practice. That would certainly make him look like a game manager/place holder while King was out. I mean it's not like they are going to change the O if they think King is coming back, right? Just my two cents.

The truth is we can win with that offensive line production and the skill players we have. We don’t need a top 10 offensive line. For those who remember, Erickson had very poor run blocking offensive lines and won 2 NC.

Yeah, but we also heard Garcia was slinging it around and was the more aggressive QB. We lucked out Garcia got hurt. TVD would have been yanked the first half of the Virginia and NC games and we wouldn't know what we have.

I think it had more to do with what the coaches were comfortable with letting him do. I know during the spring that the big talk was that TVD was doing a better job of taking the short passes instead of forcing the deep ball. Lashlee said himself that he didn't really unleash TVD until after the North Carolina game. Sometimes a guy needs a little time to get comfortable before you just start green lighting the deep passing game. They might have been a little nervous that he was going to force too many passes so they purposely tried to reel him in early but once he got comfortable, they let him rip it.
