A better way to play that last 18 seconds?

Canes won, so it's all good of course 🍻

But it's always interesting to Monday morning quarterback particular situations and approaches to them.

We go up 31-27 with 18 seconds left (and I think Ole Miss has two timeouts one timeout left).

First, I like the idea of a squib kick to potentially take a few ticks off the clock instead of the automatic touchback.

Second (and this may have been unworkable because of our sudden depth challenges in the secondary with the ejection and players getting banged up), why bother with rushing the QB at all? Why not drop all 11 LBs and DBs to various depths and force Chambliss to search for an "open" receiver as the clock ticks down?

He stands in the pocket for 4-5 seconds and then has to throw the inevitable check down, where we've got plenty of guys to make the tackle. Seems like a lot tougher road for the offense then what allowed them to have a fairly legitimate shot at a TD on the final play

A squib kick could have given them an extra 5-15yards we didn’t need to give them any extra yardage. My guess on not dropping everyone back is because chambliss can run and make crazy things happen so we wanted to keep pressure on him .

There was lot of confusion all night with the defense. Probably has to do with starters missing and the style of play Ole Miss runs.
Two really good observations, thanks.. but F**k it we won despite having a subpar defensive game and won a game that in past years would have slipped away. No moping here. We’re going home.🙌🏽Go Canes

I hear ya ... thing is the QB scramble gonna take up a lot of time ... and it's not like nobody will be there.

Still have say 3 LBs playing underneath who can come up to make the tackle.

Again, just looking at possibly another way of approaching that late-game scenario

The first play (big gain) to mid field was the problem. They made a play its that simple. There is one thing that cannot happen and thats let somebody get behind you. Same with trying a squib kick what if they return it? I have seen it happen.

Squib doesn't help.
Anything over 10-11 seconds gives them 3 plays anyway.

I knew the 4-step drop and fire was a completion as it left Chamblis' hands.

The switch up on the D for the last play was a good call.
Thankfully, Poyser (helping out) backed off a bit. If he he plows through there they throw the flag.

Squib kick also risks a return. Kick it out of the end zone & leave it to defense.

Ole Miss was the hurt dog last night after Lame Muffin left them at the altar, they were biting like one anyway. That last play was 50-50 going either way. FWIW, there was holding and grabbing both ways on that play, there were refs right there to see it and let them play. Last year, we lose this game. I’m good with this one.

Don’t turtle. Our prevent defense prevents us from winning.
