A better way to play that last 18 seconds?

I was thinking the Boston College Doug Flutie's hail may 41 years ago on the last play. Thank good it did not work this time.

Two really good observations, thanks.. but F**k it we won despite having a subpar defensive game and won a game that in past years would have slipped away. No moping here. We’re going home.🙌🏽Go Canes
Was not a subpar defensive game on the whole. We held them way under their season averages for points and yards. Credit to them for minimizing pass rush but we also gifted them with 4 dropped INTs, 2 of which were comical.

Squib kick not a terrible idea, but I'd also worry about our kicker duck-hooking one out of bounds and starting them off at the 35.

Interesting take. They were held below all their season averages on the offensive stat sheet, but yet the game plan was sub par?
Maybe the expectations bar has been raised too high for sacks and turnovers( 4 dropped int’s)?

It shouldn't be that easy to move the ball. They went like 40 yards in 13 seconds... Chambliss hadn't hit a deep ball all game and rarely threw any. I would have just ran our normal defense to an extent but backed the secondary up a bit.

I would have had 3 edge guys on the field set to rush....rush both ends, possibly drop the guy over the nose to spy or rush at times to keep honest.....drop all 8 behind, layered at the stick and then deeper. Keep it in front to keep clock moving, and tackle.

Ole Miss was the hurt dog last night after Lame Muffin left them at the altar, they were biting like one anyway. That last play was 50-50 going either way. FWIW, there was holding and grabbing both ways on that play, there were refs right there to see it and let them play. Last year, we lose this game. I’m good with this one.
it's called OPI on that last play.

Canes won, so it's all good of course 🍻

But it's always interesting to Monday morning quarterback particular situations and approaches to them.

We go up 31-27 with 18 seconds left (and I think Ole Miss has two timeouts one timeout left).

First, I like the idea of a squib kick to potentially take a few ticks off the clock instead of the automatic touchback.

Second (and this may have been unworkable because of our sudden depth challenges in the secondary with the ejection and players getting banged up), why bother with rushing the QB at all? Why not drop all 11 LBs and DBs to various depths and force Chambliss to search for an "open" receiver as the clock ticks down?

He stands in the pocket for 4-5 seconds and then has to throw the inevitable check down, where we've got plenty of guys to make the tackle. Seems like a lot tougher road for the offense then what allowed them to have a fairly legitimate shot at a TD on the final play
I do not like the idea of a squib kick. Why not kick the ball out of the end zone (like Miami did) and 100% know where Chambliss will start? With the game on the line, and to move on to the national championship, you take the option of "we know where Ole Miss will start their potential GW drive" instead of, "let's try this squib kick and there's some uncertainty".

Secondly, you rush guys so that the game must end lol. If you don't rush Chambliss, he could literally just stand there, and stand there. ****, he could be just standing there right now. He doesn't have to throw. So, it's just a stalemate. You rush to force him throw early, late, off balance, off his spot, perhaps get a sack. Not rushing him is definitely not the answer.
