8 Team Playoffs

what about a 2 or 3 loss conference champion and a runner-up in a conference that has only 1 loss ? then what ?
Wouldn't be a problem imo, the playoffs aren't a right, it's based on whether or not you earned the opportunity to play for a chance at a Natty. If you don't win your conference, then you shouldn't be in, end of discussion.

As for a 2 or 3 loss conference champion, I'm perfectly fine with that if they win their conference. The only teams it would affect negatively are Notre Dame who would be forced to join a conference in order to get in, or a 1 loss runner up who shouldn't be crying about it anyway because they didn't win their conference.

Which runner up has a legit grievance for the playoffs this year? And the only conference champ with multiple losses this season is Washington at 10-3.

It should be 6 teams like the NFL.

All the P5 Champs & one at large bid for the best of the rest (undefeated G5 champ) top 1 & 2 seeds get a bye.

If we had 8 teams this year, it would be
1. Bama
2. Clemson
3. Notre Dame
4. Oklahoma
5. UGA
6. Oh St
7. Michigan
8. UCF

Out of that 8, UGA & Mich don't deserve an opportunity to play for a National championship, they don't belong in the playoffs because they lost their conferences convincingly & both had losses vs playoff teams. Mich lost to Notre Dame & UGA lost to Bama, along with bad losses vs LSU (for UGA) & to Oh St (for Mich).

You do realize that there is 12 teams in the playoffs in the NFL??????????

Obviously. I meant how they structure their playoff format, with the top 2 teams get a bye.

You guys know how to read right?

yes i do know how to read and you said 6 like the NFL.....and its dumb to do that anyway. Everyone will continue to play crap teams out of conference and just try to win their conference. Its funny how the lower division have 16 teams in the playoffs but somehow the top tier cant?

Because there is no interest in a first round matchup between Alabama and Middle Tennessee.

It's 6 per conference, as in 6 in the AFC & 6 in the NFC, so when I said like the NFL it was an obvious reference to how they structure their 6. You're being intentionally obtuse.

And the reason why 8-16 or more would be a problem is because it completely devalues the regular season & eliminates the importance of winning your conference.

Only reason to not expand playoffs is because it would make regular season losses less important. As it is, cfb is a playoff every week.

I’d still like to see an expanded playoff. 8 teams is good.

My plan is similar. Win P5 Conference and you're in. If P5 is truly P5. Take 3 at large. But, I think ND got a free pass this year. Either everyone should have a conference championship game or no one should. ND should have to play by the same rules.

So to make sure I am understanding....every sport that has regular season and has playoffs of more than 6....the regular season in not important.....makes sense.

If it were ever to go to 8 playoffs it should be:

ACC
SEC
B10
B12
P12
Best Non-P5 team (UCF)
At-Large
At-Large

Independents can only qualify for at large. Non-P5 have one guaranteed spot and are eligible for an additional at large bid if needed. Seeding done by final ranking.

This year you would have
ALA(1) v Wash(8)
OU (4) v UGA (5)
ND (3) v OSU (6)
Clem (2) v UCF (7)

Last year would've been
Clem (1) v UCF (8)
ALA (4) v OSU (5)
UGA (3) v AUB (6)
OU (2) v USC (7)

Would be very interesting imo. Four weeks leading up to the first/second weekend of January. Quarterfinals/Semi's back to back weeks, with one week bye leading up to championship.

I think 8 teams is ideal. The point is to include every team that might deserve to be considered the best team in the country. At 4 teams, it's possible that team could get left out because a: they had a hiccup in the regular season that left them just outside the top 4, or b: they don't play in the Power 5, but can't crack the top 4 because their schedule doesn't warrant it. There will ALWAYS be bubble teams to whatever process you set up for a playoff. Going to 8 teams wont stop that. Neither would going to 48. You just want to include any team that has any possible legitimate claim to being the best team in the nation.
