49ers did all of that complaining about our field...

Exactly. You can’t sit in a 10 pt lead with 15 and those weapons with 8 minutes left in a game. Ask Tennessee. San Fran continued to run their offense. Which is run on first down, mix in PAs on 2nd down and get into comfortable 3rd downs. That D ran out of gas.

1st quarter KC had 2 possessions
2nd quarter KC had 2 possessions
3rd quarter KC had 2 possessions
4th quarter KC had 4 possessions scored on 3

49ers had to limit KC possessions. They did that until the end

kc had limited possessions because the gameplan was to run them to death and control the clock (which was working incredibly well). then he went big brain and decided to throw more on second downs with a 2-possession lead in the fourth quarter when they were getting 5-6 yards/rush on first downs.

and that doesn't even mention the unbelievably poor clock/timeout management. the first half one was inexcusable but has already been talked to death, but almost as bad was not calling one on the 4th down try with the play clock winding down. the refs should have called it because it was egregious, but shanahan never should've left it up to the refs and an obviously-frazzled jimmy g.

Yes, they zoomed in on John Lynch and you could see him hand gesturing for a timeout.

I must’ve been looking away at that moment, but it doesn’t surprise me. John Lynch was a pretty smart player in his day, of course he was calling for a time out

Yep. Only person on Earth who didn't think a TO should be called there was Shanahan.
i saw this happen two other times this playoffs with other teams, even at the end of the game. why do teams want to save timeouts when time is so precious? running out the clock was just dumb in that situation.

I don’t understand how these coaches change their offensive philosophies to play it safe and expect the game to continue in the same manner. Time and time again you see teams take their foot off of the gas peddle and it bites them in the butt by the end of the game. SF had it rolling and played it safe with two runs in the same 3 and out and KC just had to implement a blitz on 3rd down, and the momentum flipped. If the offense played the same (or took the route of the hurry up that you saw in the first half that took KC by surprise), SF would have scored again and it wild have been all but over. Up until that point, I had SF winning and Garropolo taking MVP honors.

Instead, 3 and out, momentum shift, enter Mahomes and KC wins. It just appears that playing it safe turns out to be the less safe option at the end of the day.

He didn’t play it safe. He tried to pass late in the game and the plays blew up on him. If he actually “played it safe” and ran more with the lead he likely has a ring today.

The end of the first half just gets worse when you realize that what Shanahan was so deathly afraid of was quickly going 3 and out and then going into halftime down 17-10. That worst case scenario, which seems unlikely given that the defense was playing lights out and the offense was moving the ball effectively all first half, is not the huge risk he thought it was. In the event of the worst scenario, he still gets possession to start the second half and is working with the 4th ranked offense in the league to bring him back.

That "risk" was well worth it because the upside would have been going into halftime up 17-10 and the ball to start the half and extend the lead to double digits.

End of the day, coaching scared always loses in modern day football. But with the way Shanahan coaches maybe he knew he was bound to choke and his ideal scenario was for defense to have been out there all 60 minutes so he wouldn't need to coach his team to a win.

Funny thing is that for 3 quarters Garrapolo was outplaying Mahomes and was headed for the MVP and the win. Mahomes was missing open guys and throwing picks and just seemed off. Then the 4th quarter happened and everything flipped.

As a lifelong Dolphins fan I was ok with seeing SF lose a Super Bowl in the Dolphins’ stadium.

just like you guys cry bout our D not being elite. there are no truly elite defenses when you go up against an explosive offense. the san fran d is as elite as you can get and played pretty well all game, but you can only stop a good offense for so long. no matter how good your d is, youll need a very good O to go with it if you wanna win big. when you play the best of the best, youre gonna end up in a battle where your D wont be able to get the stops needed and youll need your O to score. the niners built a 10 point lead but needed to go score for score in the fourth

let's remember something, the 49ERS were nothing last year and that being said: this year, they're in the SUPERBOWL. The future is bright wouldn't you say. Coach SHANAHAN is growing also.

We’re getting 7+ yards per carry on the ground? Abandon the run!

Very bright for them next year. I think Jimmy G is ultimately a flacco level QB tho, but he won one. Their main issue will be cap management. Same issue all young teams have as guys come into contract years. Cheap bosa is a blessing.

I’m a fan of Shanahan’s offense and how he maxes out match ups. Not a fan of his cry baby antics but he’s no coRch.

Guy blasting him for coming up short in two super bowls are off the mark.

Game was over before it started. You insult the grass at Greetree and you ain’t winning shizzle.

Them Greentree fields are cursed. We ain't won nothing in 15+ years. Niners tried to change the grass and still couldn't lift that curse.

He's an offensive savant but there's no denying that the man is an abysmal coach when it comes to situational, high pressure football. This wasn't as bad as the ATL SB, but it was still really bad from Shanahan.

Correct. He took the ball out of Mostert's hand in the 4th quarter. If you are going to throw the ball, then take a shot or two downfield while you have the lead. He looked like he was running West Coast. I don't think think he had enough confidence in Jimmy G.

Very well put my friend. You explained it perfectly.
