2nd Scrimmage Breakdown

One of my best friends went to Mich and has above avg connections into the football program

Under Gattis Mich had multiple WRs underperform. Since he’s the play caller Gattis isn’t able to devote as much time to the craft as a standard WR coach… this is the negative

Looking at their 2021 stats,

RBs caught over 60 balls. Fairly even distribution of catches between WRs.

Here’s my predictions, in no particular order:

1. RBs catch over 50 balls
2. TEs catch over 50 balls and 8+TDs
3. After X, the next WR with most catches is BSmith with over 30. Within these catches, he has over 5 espn type highlight reel plays
4. We avg 33 per game and very close to 200yds rushing a game
5. We go 10-2 with a win at Texas AM
6. ESPN does multiple pieces on our DL and the rotation of guys performing well
7. TVD is top 10 in heisman voting but not final 3 because he wont have gaudy stats

I keep telling people stop comparing us to last years Mich team. Their QB was Hot Garbage. We will see what the Gattis offense is supposed to look like this year if our WR's can hold onto the ball.

What I don't understand is if Gattis was at Michigan for 3 years, 2019-2021, why does everyone keep only using 2021 as a comparison?

Think Frank Ladson is going to surprise a lot of people this year. 6-4 4.4 speed it has to come together at some point. Nobody ever brings up the fact that our DBs were the only unit to get any praise out of spring ball and have been praised multiple times in fall camp. The schedule sets up nicely with the 2 warm up games in the beginning. We will know who the #1 WR is going into the A&M game and I expect it to be Frank.
I tend to side with this take when it comes to Ladson. According to reports he is the starter opposite KSmith so he must be doing some good things in camp/practice to warrant that. I am not believing he is out there dropping passes and fumbling around like an idiot and Mario/Gattis are giving him the starting nod. Its just unfortunately its only getting reported when he does something bad.

I have no doubt that him and all these WRs will be on a short leash though. Dropped passes wont be tolerated.

We only averaged 30.9 vs FBS opponents. These dudes saying 34 are factoring in the high school game we played.

Vs. teams with winning records, in which we played 5, we averaged 24.8 PPG, which was 57th in the country.

Lotta fools gold last season that make me nowhere near sold on this offense. I know TVD is talented, but he lost his 2 most productive receivers, it surely doesn't sound like someone has stepped up to fill those voids yet (but it's 2 weeks into camp, there's still plenty of time), and until proven otherwise, we have an OL who can't move my grandma off the football.

We were the worst rushing team in the ACC last season. The worst. So, I get the optimism around TVD, but the bottom line is this was an incredibly imbalanced offense last year that sputtered against good teams. I'm not impressed scoring 47 vs Duke and 42 vs UNC (35 on offense). Those defenses were swiss cheese. I want to see us move the ball consistently in both phases vs A&M and Clemson and even FSU. But perhaps the silver lining is we can win the coastal without having to be truly elite on offense, because these teams are so putrid. We'll see.
Great points. My original comment about offense was we need to score 28 per game, not including Bethune Cookman. if we can average that in ACC play I tihnk we are in pretty good shape to win 9 games.

Ladson isn’t chopped liver.
I am rooting for him but he’s not a proven receiver. TVD deserved at least 1 proven receiver at minimum from the portal this past offseason.

if our receivers underperform I am not blaming gattis. I can't blame him for something I thought was going to be a problem before he ever got hired.

I’ve had 3 relatives play at Michigan and one currently plays at Michigan.

Many here said to take your information with a grain of salt due to the Harbaugh influence.

Honestly I personally don’t care what these coaches did at other stops. I care what they do here. Everybody gotta go earn them checks we got two weeks!

However my little cousin did say Gattis was smart as ****! We will see in the games

There are so many variables it’s hard to pinpoint success or failure on one coach. All my buddy said is that a GA spent about half the time coaching the WRs at Mich. not sure if you can confirm that or not.

My predictions weren’t based solely on Mich 2021 stats.

I do definitely think Gattis will be more creative in the run game and with scheming WRs open, with more crossing routes

What I neglected to say in my original post is that there are so many other playmakers on this offense, it’s OKAY if we don’t have one WR catch 70+ balls and 1,000yds. There is plenty of talent to spread it around

I’m also looking forward to Thad Franklin breaking people’s will in the 2H of games just churning out yards.

You will not beat Clemson with a bunch of UFA WRs and a mediocre offensive line. That front is going to be too much to handle. I think we have more than a puncher’s chance against A&M if we can get to the second half within range.
How do we know we have a mediocre offensive line? Why not account for poorly schemed and poorly coached? Logan came in and was penciled in as a starter. Was going to start at Oregon before a season ending injury and he may not be first guard off the bench.

Predicting where we or Clemson will be game 11 is silly. Injuries and yes round 3 of covid and how teams are playing at the time are real factors.

I’m assuming a third scrimmage will be much more situational and less hardcore than the first two, to start letting the guys recover before the first game. Will be interesting to see how Mario and co handle the first two games and practices with ATM in mind. I’d expect us to take it a bit easier than fall camp so we can get there as fresh as possible, and use the games to just rep the basic formations and plays across the depth chart.

Very confused by the responses on this thread.

The post says Frank is expected to start. That means, he is being labeled a top 3 WR on the team.

Yet by reading this thread, we should cut him and not allow him to play a single snap at UM.

Don't forget amigos, the secondary is being called the best UM secondary in decades. Might affect how the WRs look in practice.

Why does the Juco WR not get the hate Frank does? Or every other WR that Frank is ahead of right now on the depth chart.

He won't be a first round pick, but like @Boarcane said, he ain't chopped liver. He's "most frustrating" because his ceiling is through the roof.

I understand what you're saying but CIS is already trying to move the Juco kid to TE. 🤷‍♂️

What makes you think our OL is mediocre? We have Campbell and Rivers who have been standouts so far. Clark has been very reliable and consistent through the years, Scaife being your 4th or 5th best OL when he was an All ACC 2nd team last year and Zion is a 1st team All ACC/All American contender when he comes back. That’s the makings of a really good to great OL IMO.

Never being able to pick up 1 yard on 3rd and short is a pretty good reason as to why it’s mediocre

Charleston Rambo broke the mother-bleeping Miami WR record for catches and receiving yards in a single season in an offense that featured an early season change at QB, porous OL play and zero running game.

At this point of time last year, many here were hoping he'd be serviceable at best after a fairly disappointing career at Oklahoma. Not saying a guy like Ladson or George, et al. are about to go on and do that this year, nor should they be expected to, but reading too much in August scrimmages is insanity, especially when we've upgraded the offensive coaching staff, have more consistent QB play and a better OL. Relax.

Just wait until the first drop in the week 1 game thread. LOL
