2026 Portal QBs

Some people on this board believe Mario’s approach to QB portal recruiting is good. Others, like me, think it’s not.

Regardless of which side you’re on, failing to land a quarterback is an undeniable miss by Mario and the staff. We’re playing in the national championship on Monday. Cam Ward was the No. 1 pick in last year’s draft. Beck is going to get drafted.

If we still come up empty, Mario deserves warranted blame and criticism for failing to sell this opportunity. He's a coach that wants to get judged for his talent acquisition. Usually it's spectacular. This would be a massive failure.
Meanwhile Lane pulls 3 portal qb’s, 2 are likely better than any qb on our roster at the moment. One of them we went after. The optics aren’t good. Our qb strategy is very bad and requires a lot of luck.

We lose Vaughn because of the QB situation, Mario gonna learn real quick.

Sucks that this is happening before the biggest game in more than two decades. All self-inflicted. All could have been avoided.
If all of this is obvious to fans, how are we still dragging our feet? I can understand prioritizing the game on Monday, but there should be staffers working on this behind the scenes until it gets done. Zero urgency.

This is what happens when you are 100% dependent on a QBs from portal while beating your chest about not investing financially in upper echelonhigh school quarterbacks

With this way, doing business, you can never strike out. You simply cannot miss on a QB from the portal.
I mean not even upper echelon, just good talent. First three classes we got Emory and Judd, that’s unacceptable. No tools or real ability among them. We aren’t taking elite talent now at the position, but both Nickel and Coleman have some of the tools to become a solid P4 starter.

I’m sure they’re working things behind the scenes, but I think Mario and his staff may have put themselves in a hole they can’t climb out of.

We’re trying to convince quarterbacks who never entered the portal in the first place to suddenly jump in. If they wanted to transfer, they could have entered earlier, but they clearly didn’t. Most of them are probably well‑compensated, comfortable where they are, and feel loyal to their coaches Now we’re asking them to make a life‑altering decision at the last minute. That’s a really tough sell.

if only we had staffers whose whole job was to recruit and evaluate and who had nothing to do with game prep in order to handle these situations... Oh wait.

I don't think I agree with this.

There are obviously staffers working behind the scenes.

"Had" Leavitt until they didn't.

Offered Pitt QB a bunch for it to be turned down.

They are turning over the stones that haven't been made public.

Patience.

I’m a patient person but we’re hanging on for dear life. Doesn’t the portal close soon?

they also publicly said they were not holding visits during "game prep" for cotton bowl. Stupid decision and one most other schools did not follow. Hence why our portal class is what it is and why Indiana had all their needs filled. Staff has had multiple missteps in the portal and some of their philosophies are finally coming back to bite them when you dont pull a ward or beck out of a hat last minute. No matter what some would have you believe you cannot always pull a first round qb out of the portal.
