2026 Portal QBs

I believe you that nothing has been posted on social media. I'm just not reading as much into it as you are. You may be right, but Zenitz's reporting might also be right. That's all I'm saying.
His announcement on his IG story only says committed. IDK.

I'm seeing a lot more "this is why you don't lean on the portal" now versus in the past. No disagreement that sitting around and waiting is dumb.

But people arguing that we shouldn't focus on portal QB shopping doesn't make sense to me.

The lesson here is go get your guy in the first week. Not stop relying on the portal.
Thank you. It is not a sunshine pumper v mope issue. It is about optimizing processes and minimizing distractions. The only upside is that we might back into the best qb available in Longstreet.

We're 23-5 over the last two years and playing for #6 on Monday because Mario took a high risk approach and won twice. I can't sit here now and say this was the year to stop taking the risks that were integral in getting us those results. I thought Bailey was someone who would have been a fine option after we swung for the fences. The risk was always there that he wouldn't wait around that long (Same as it was when we pursued higher rated HS QBs who didn't sign here over him). When you gamble you will end up losing eventually. Doesn't mean you should stop gambling before you lose for the first time, IMO.

Lemme ask you, since you did call your shot early and urged Mario to go get Bailey and be done with it: Is that what you wanted us to do the prior two years in the portal? We would have gotten Will Rogers in '24 and Mendoza/Mensah in '25 had we pursued the bird in the hand portal strategy. Results inarguably would have been much worse in '24 (perhaps disastrous), and taking Mendoza/Mensah in '25 after those results would have been much, much different than taking them after Cam.

We'll see how things shake out in the end here, but even if we end up with worst possible outcome this year (Emory/Nickel/Coleman spring & fall QB-o-rama, or even worse Nickel/Coleman + G5/FCS alsoran cause Emory goes to ECU) I'm still not gonna kill Coach for pursuing a strategy for a third time that I think was a big reason why we are playing in the National Championship game on Monday.

I understand why a lot of you will disagree.
My concern is less the approach to securing a portal qb (although it seems we were very slow off the line this year) and more that we’ve been lazy, uninterested, etc. in building a qb room where we can at least field a somewhat competent player if we fail in the portal.

Compare our approach to Oregon. They got Gabriel in the portal but also brought in Moore to sit and be ready to take over. Now they’ve brought in Raiola to sit if Moore returns or start if he leaves. OSU has St. Clair behind Sayin and had Sayin behind Howard. Lane got Leavitt and is still chasing Longstreet.

We can be both aggressive in the portal while also taking steps to mitigate the risk that comes with our approach. It’s the second part that’s put us in this absurd position.

The QB portal market wasn’t anything close to what it has been. I think we will look back at the past two years as outliers in portal qb market due to covid. There really wasn’t more than a handful of guys we really wanted that were actually in the portal. I’m guessing the guys we would really be interested in never made it to the portal (JKS, Mensah, Mateer, Maiava)

What’s interesting is that we might have to persuade Emory from transferring after the natty (if those rumors were true).

Maudes pin this post, thank you.

we dug ourselves this hole (again): start trying to flip guys or reach deeper into G6/FCS land.

Anthony Colandrea
Deuce Knight
Ethan Grunkenmeyer
Longstreet
JC French
Aidan Chiles
Jaylen Rainor
Katin Houser
Jaden Craig
Ben Diniucci
Cole Payton
Taron ****ens
Caden Pinnick
Pinnick signed with Washington State. Colorado and Oregon State were going after him as well. My favorite freshman QB. I’m excited to see him play at WSU

100 percent. Only thing I'll add is the QB depth issue and portal strategy piece go hand in hand. If you don't already have a competent QB in the room, you better make sure you have a **** good portal strategy. We have neither.

I think you don't need the portal for a QB this year- Nickel can do the job and can spend the money on other parts of the team.

QB for the #2 HS team in the country (#1 public school). The #1 school, Mater Dei, can recruit nationally, Nickel's HS, Milton, was doing with local GA talent. 25-0 to close out his HS career, with 2 state titles. He's a winner. Even if he had a lot of p4 talent on his team, he has a talent for finding ways to win football games (Ken Dorsey-like).

Will have Fletcher in backfield, Toney and excellent WR corp catching passes, a good OL. Would be nice to get a playmaker at TE to help out a young QB.

This is correct, all went need to do was find a overloaded talented room that had a bincj og underclassmen and say we got a one year rental, next year if you study and take the steps needed, its your job to lose. I was talking about that. Would been great to have had Longstreet on the team for the season to know what he is capable of.

I wonder if we could offer some once highly touted players who have fallen a little bit, but still might have a lot of untapped talent, and make it heavily inventive based.

For instance, you bring a Nico or Lagway and you give them like $700K-$1mm base salary, but if they lead us to 10 wins, they get another million, then 11 wind gets you more money, then getting into the playoffs gets you more and so on. I wouldn't mind if say Lagway came here and ended up making $7mm if he led us to at least the semis if not the natty.

There is a savior sitting right in front of our faces.

Former high rated recuit
Available in the portal
At a much lower asking price than a few years ago.
A guy a lot of people liked at the time.

Bring in Jaden Rashada and let’s get it.
Will the UPS store give him a leave of absence to focus on football? I’m kidding. Hope he is doing well

If they believed that, they wouldnt have entered the portal imo. Especially not for someone who coming in for a guaranteed starting spot.

HS success does not equal College success. That's proven every single year.

Per practice reports, Nickel isn't even serviceable.

Why not look at the portal? If you can get an elite starting QB for the right price you do it. If you can't get one because they are asking for NFL money, then it's only a massive failure if you don't have a QB on the roster good enough to start. I think Nickel is good enough to start.
