2026 Portal QBs

If we didn’t get lucky with Cam. Our current situation is drastically different. We would have been a .500 or worse team without Cam and that defense. We likely wouldn’t have gotten Beck or anybody notable coming off that season. This portal plan was going to eventually backfire.
We didnt get lucky with Cam Cristobal decided it was him or bust by any means. Beck may have been luck.

Mario always said that he wanted to build Miami back to be a program that could SUSTAIN the success.

His QB strategy is the opposite, not sustainable at all.

I really can’t understand.

Ummm…. But it's also the reason we are here.

And it's not like he hasn't recruited QBs? Not sure I follow.

Had Cam, then got Beck and playing in a natty Monday, and yet we couldn’t hit on any top QBs in the portal. We have money, proven success with QBs the past two years, a top OL, and offensive weapons like Malachi Toney, yet we seem to be in one of the worst positions of any top school right now. Ridiculous.

The issue getting absolutely railroaded in HS recruiting in ‘23 & ‘24. And then not backfilling via the portal to fix that **** up. The Russian roulette of portal QBs is fine imo. But you have to have a solid fall back option. Snagging a guy to sit this year should’ve absolutely been the move.

Then you roll the dice with a third year Nickel or second year

I don’t think it’s a lack of interest. Seems like a bit of ****iness thinking we’d steal Simpson if Leavitt didn’t check all the boxes. Most of the other guys seem sign, sealed and delivered to the school they committed to once they hit the portal honestly. Not much you can do about that.

I got kicked into a wood chipper for even suggesting that if you don’t bat 1000 for a portal quarterback and don’t have any ability of developing the high school quarterbacks you on the roster already……….. you’re gonna be in deep ****.

The two things that make Miami attractive to potential portal QBs is Miami overpaying them and we protect them with a good offensive line.

If a potential portal QB has a chance to be overpaid and be protected with a good line while playing for someone who has a history of developing quarterbacks then I believe that’s when we lose a fight

That strategy got us Cam and Beck, of course is fine.

I definitely don’t like the lack of urgency but mainly the fact that without a plan B we put ourselves always in a boom or bust situation.

It’s looking like we busting this time.

I’d go and steal Amari Odom from Syracuse. I’d take Braden Atkinson from Oregon St.

I already said Ty Pennington from North Arizona. Nick Minicucci from Delaware. Owen McCown. Caden Veltkamp from FAU, Brad Jackson from Texas St. JC French…

Noah Fifita may be one of Biggest names who is still gettable who we can probably easily afford buyout and raise for and Arizona won’t compete with us.. I mean I’d take a big swing at Chambliss and hope Ole Miss is fully moved on to Deuce Knight

TrumpyCane big fan of Fifta, had a solid bounce back season this year

Agree but I think we can all agree that the high risk strategy of the last 2 years was playing with fire and not the ideal process?

It’s been discussed here before and that’s why I said that we may end up with a desirable result but the process and plan sucks.

Going to the NFL well is not an ideal plan which goes to my arrogance point.

I understand the swinging for the fence approach. It was arrogant before and it became even more arrogant because we got into the playoffs.
We're 23-5 over the last two years and playing for #6 on Monday because Mario took a high risk approach and won twice. I can't sit here now and say this was the year to stop taking the risks that were integral in getting us those results. I thought Bailey was someone who would have been a fine option after we swung for the fences. The risk was always there that he wouldn't wait around that long (Same as it was when we pursued higher rated HS QBs who didn't sign here over him). When you gamble you will end up losing eventually. Doesn't mean you should stop gambling before you lose for the first time, IMO.

Lemme ask you, since you did call your shot early and urged Mario to go get Bailey and be done with it: Is that what you wanted us to do the prior two years in the portal? We would have gotten Will Rogers in '24 and Mendoza/Mensah in '25 had we pursued the bird in the hand portal strategy. Results inarguably would have been much worse in '24 (perhaps disastrous), and taking Mendoza/Mensah in '25 after those results would have been much, much different than taking them after Cam.

We'll see how things shake out in the end here, but even if we end up with worst possible outcome this year (Emory/Nickel/Coleman spring & fall QB-o-rama, or even worse Nickel/Coleman + G5/FCS alsoran cause Emory goes to ECU) I'm still not gonna kill Coach for pursuing a strategy for a third time that I think was a big reason why we are playing in the National Championship game on Monday.

I understand why a lot of you will disagree.

Do we know why? He seems all but likely to land at VT. I wonder if the holdup is grades or something like that.
I don't think he officially committed. It sounds like he's expected to but nothing official....and VT did go out and get Bryce Baker from UNC as well to compete with 2 other QBs on the roster.
