Funny that when a kid busts out of Oregon he overrated but Lanning just finished year 3 like Mario. Who is the homegrown player he can say he recruited and developed?

QBs - Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel and now Dante Moore all transfers.

WR - Tez Johnson (transfer), Evan Stewart (transfer), Troy Franklin (Mario signee), Bryant (Mario), Holden (transfer)

RB- Jordan James (Mario recruit), Bucky Irving (Mario signee), Makhi Hughes

OL - Jackson Powers Johnson (Mario signee) Josh Cornerly (Mario recruit)

DL - Derrick Harmon (transfer) Brandon Dorlus (mario signee) Jordan Burch (transfer)

DB - Jabbar Muhammad (transfer), Christian Gonzalez (Mario signee), khryee Jackson (Mario signee), Evan Williams (transfer).

Their projected top players in 2025 are all transfers (Moore, Stewart, Hughes, and Dillon Thieneman)

For a supposed LBer savant, he has to be guy he has coached in 3 years be drafted. Jamal Hill who was picked in the 7th round.

2. Bucky Irving was a transfer from Minnesota to Lanning
3. Christian Gonzalez was a transfer from Colorado to Lanning
4. Jackson was a transfer from Bama to Lanning
5. Cornerly signed to UO on 4/8/2022 to Lanning
6. Bryant Jr was a transfer from USC to Lanning

Are you counting kids as “Mario recruit” even though they committed to Oregon when Lanning was the HC? If so, I’d love to hear the reasoning behind that. I ask because Conerly and James both committed to UO when Lanning was the UO HC. Christian Gonzales also was a transfer that committed to Oregon a month after Mario was gone from UO and Gary Bryant transferred to UO in 2023. For their top projected guys in 2025, you left off a 2023 Lanning signee that was 2nd in the big 10 in sacks in 2024 and will likely be a top 50 pick.

I love discussions like these, but it’s difficult to have them objectively when most of the “facts” you listed are false, lol.
 
honestly at this point the term talent development will be associated with up and coming coaches at lower levels. Sure some coaches will land some ready made freshman or guys who just need a year. But the idea of guys sitting 2-3 years and then blowing up the scene is going to be fewer and fewer with teams in the top 15-25

I think his point is that fans are bashing Mario for lack of development at certain positions in Year 4 of his tenure but if we actually cared enough to look in depth into other top programs..everyone is having the same issues at key positions and constantly have to turn to the portal for help. At least that’s what I think he meant. Lol. Mario been getting alot of unfair criticism at LB and DT. Just like I figure other coaches do by their fans. Impossible to bat 1.000 at all positions development and depth wise nowadays. Kids jump ship after one season if they don’t get PT.

Yep We are in a new era of college football where most kids aren’t sitting on the sidelines waiting to “develop” to get their shot. I mean we got posters calling out the staff for a missed eval on Patterson cause the kid decided to bolt after a ******* year of college lol. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a cfb in the future where most players who are recruited and “developed” will come from lower level schools, & the top 10-15 teams will focus more on bringing in ready made players developed at these schools for the most part.

Development is just one contributing factor of results, a layer deeper to help explain in CFB why results are being met or not. Lanning has delivered at Oregon for the most, Mario has not.

So if the argument is that Lanning hasn’t had all that much success developing his HS recruits, we can look into that, but right away, the easy counter argument is that whatever he is missing there is made up for in the portal. With Miami and Mario, well, we can’t seem to get the balance of the roster right especially on defense and we are going into year 4.

I don’t think these are unfair gripes, I think they are very fair concerns and observations. It’s a make or break year here, we gotta win but we still have major holes throughout the roster which is concerning, and while some were addressed via portal others were not.

Cool. I thought Jordan James and Josh Cornerly were Mario recruits. Looked up there 247 profiles, Cornely was a Mario recruit but signed by Lanning, James was a commitment Lanning took from Georgia. Cornely projected late 1st early 2nd. James is a Day 3 pick.

Rest were transfers, not homegrown guys. I didn’t want to include them arguments can be made who actually developed them.

Who did I leave off? I used ourlads two deep. Are you talking about Tuioti? He was second In sacks? It lists him having 5.5 sacks, is that right?

I listed Josh Conerly as a Mario recruit because he was several SD recruits that cycle that were heavily favored to sign with OU before Mario left. Conerly if I remember correctly actually visited Miami after Mario got the job. But you’re right he signed with OU Lanning so he should be given credit.

Same with James, I confused him with the RB who killed OSU in the shoe.

Your right about Gonzalez and Bryant they were transfers and Mario guys. Mixed them up

I was talking about Matayo Uiagalalei (sp?), DJ’s brother. He had 10.5 sacks last year, will be a true JR in 2025 and is def on pace to be a R1/R2 pick.

Yeah my point was Mario catches flack but Lannkng doesn’t. Both take a lot of transfers and have high ranked recruits transfer out.

The flack is because we aren't winning meaningful games. The flack is because glaring weaknesses are not being addressed. The flack is because of attempting to put bandaids on severed arteries.

Mario catches flack for the below while at UM.

1-6 vs top 25 teams (not getting it done against quality opponents)

4-9 in November (not winning when it counts and when your team should be peaking)

5 losses as a double digit favorite. Most of any FBS program since 2022 (consistently losing to teams we have no business losing to. signs of being underdeveloped and poorly coached)
