Welcome to the fourth 2020 edition of the column I like to call “The Freshman 15”. If you’re a first time reader, this will be a focus on the rankings and the order of the top 15 uncommitted (to Miami) recruits the coaching staff is pursuing.

The order will be based mainly on:

  • How likely a recruit is to commit to Miami at the time
  • Skill level
  • Miami's need at their position
This column will be updated throughout the cycle each month and will show movement up or down for each recruit as the list is updated.

From last month's board, the Canes struck and received commitments from the #1 prospect (Jalen Rivers) and the #9 prospect (Elijah Roberts) on this board. Miami has now nabbed both of their top ranked prospects on the board this cycle, and has shown an impressive ability to land their most important targets in the early going. Halfway to the first signing day in December, spots in Category20 are becoming scarce and UM is sure to focus in on a few top notch prospects as we get closer to the football season.

Let’s get into the board for July.

1. Issiah Walker, OT, Miami, FL (Norland) (Last Month: 7)

Ht 6-4 | Wt 310 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #148 Overall

Evaluation: Long and lean left tackle prospect that oozes athletic upside. Only adequate strength-wise right now, and needs to build his power, but has the type of quick feet that will help him stay at tackle long-term. At his best when he can get out in space and make climb blocks on the second level. Shows ability to redirect block with good technique. Could play with better leverage at this point and getting lower will benefit both his pass sets and run blocking.

In The Mix: Walker is also considering FSU, Florida, LSU, South Carolina, Penn State, and Auburn along with UM.

Latest: Walker shocked some when he decommitted from South Carolina at the Opening Finals last week. He planned on decommitting from the Gamecocks coming into the event and, interestingly enough, did not inform South Carolina beforehand. Miami, FSU, Florida, South Carolina, LSU, Auburn, and Penn State all reached out to speak with him soon after the news broke. The in-state Big 3 of Miami, FSU, and UF will for sure get officials, and Walker told me it would be difficult to pull him out of state at this point. There’s no set decision date for him, but Butch Barry is having a huge effect in this recruitment and Walker is effusive in his praise of Barry’s coaching acumen. I was confident enough to put in a UM pick for him after talking to a source close to the recruitment.

2. Chantz Williams, DE, Orange Park, FL (Oakleaf) (Last Month: NR)

Ht 6-4 | Wt 240 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #85 Overall

Evaluation: Makes his living in the opponent backfield and it’s tough for offensive linemen to square up on him with his speed off the edge. Needs work on his technique, but his first step is devastating and he has the potential to be a dynamic pass rusher for whoever lands his services.

In The Mix: Miami is in his top 5, along with Texas A&M, Florida, LSU, and UGA.

Latest: This recruitment has been a complete roller coaster, but fortunately for Miami, it feels like they’re going to end this ride on a high note after all the ups and downs. Just when it seemed like UM was out of this thing, Williams surprisingly told the Opening media that Miami had worked their way back into it, and after talking with him personally, I can say the Miami hype with Williams is real. Miami never gave up on him when he originally eliminated them, and coach Todd Stroud just recruited him even harder. Publicly, he'll be choosing from a group of UGA, LSU, Florida, Miami, Texas A&M on July 20th. Privately, he has two in mind that he can see himself at and told me that deep down, he knows where he needs to be. I put in a UM pick for Williams after speaking with him. A week away from decision day, all signs continue to point to Miami.

3. Justin Flowe, LB, Upland, CA (Upland) (Last Month: 5)

Ht 6-2 | Wt 225 | 247 Composite: 5-Star, #3 Overall

Evaluation: Flowe has a prototype inside linebacker frame with a powerful lower body. Plays with a non-stop motor that, when combined with his freakish athleticism, makes him extremely disruptive all over the field and he is always around the ball to make a play. Clocked an impressive 4.68 laser 40 recently and his coverage ability has improved year-to-year in high school. A truly violent and devastating hitter. Takes on blocks well, and knows how to use his strength and hands to shed and wrap up the ballcarrier. A+ at running down plays from the backend and he is a middle linebacker that can be trusted to shadow the entire field. He is simply the complete package at LB.

In The Mix: Florida, Georgia, Texas, OU, USC, Ohio State, Clemson, Oregon, Alabama, Arizona State, LSU, and Miami make up Flowe’s top 12.

Latest: Miami continues to push hard for Flowe and he is far and away the top priority at a huge position of need right now. Miami made his top 12 list in April, and, even better, the Canes were able to score a visit from Flowe during the spring. Program sources indicate that the interest coming from Flowe is rising and that he is higher on the Canes than many are reporting right now. UM has also worked their way into the mix with Flowe’s younger brother Jonathan, a 2021 4-star linebacker, and were able to get him to visit for Paradise Camp. Flowe has stated his intent to return to Miami for an official visit, a huge win for the Canes. While it’s going to be a long fight against some of the top programs in the country to eventually land someone as talented as Flowe, the Canes are certainly in a decent spot right now and are really selling a thin depth chart and immediate playing time to the Upland star. I think that’s resonating and is what has Miami in the mix here. To give themselves the best possible chance to land this California stud, though, the Canes are going to have to win in 2018 to give Manny Diaz proof of concept. Flowe recently set his first official visit to Alabama on Sept. 20th as well.

4. Jonathan Denis, OG, Homestead, FL (South Dade) (Last Month: 8)

Ht 6-3 | Wt 280 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #343 Overall

Evaluation: Advanced run-blocker that shows top-notch athletic ability, with movement skills that are smooth and unencumbered for a man of his size. He’s mobile enough to reach the second level of a defense with ease, featuring climbs to linebackers as a work-up blocker. Punishing presence on the line and doesn’t stop until he drives his opponent to the ground; if he gets his hands on a defender and locks on, it’s over. Also known for his intelligence off the field and has the best GPA’s on his team. That type of IQ can only aid his efforts to become an impact player at the next level.

In The Mix: Miami, FSU, LSU, Kentucky, Louisville, Oregon, Indiana, and Mississippi State make up his top 8.

Latest: Denis elected to attend Paradise Camp last month right before the dead period instead of taking a planned official visit to Kentucky, another great sign for Miami. He recently told CIS that he is setting his decision date for August 9th, so he will have time to make more officials if he chooses to after the dead period ends on July 24th. He made his first OV of the cycle to Louisville in late May and followed it up with an OV to Indiana in mid-June; Kentucky and Oregon could still get officials as well. Either way, as I’ve said all along, I’m still strong on my Miami pick for Denis.

5. Dazalin Worsham, WR, Trussville, AL (Hewitt-Trussville) (Last Month: NR)

Ht 6-0 | Wt 185 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #255 Overall

Evaluation: Smooth and athletic strider. Plays with sudden feet on routes underneath. Plays much faster than his listed 4.8 speed. Will take what the defense gives him and shows ability as a possession receiver. Huge threat in the screen game as an elusive runner after the catch in the open field with a shred of daylight. Impressive body control in every direction to haul in passes. Willing downfield blocker.

In The Mix: Miami, Alabama, LSU, and Texas A&M.

Latest: UM’s receiver board had been a mystery through much of the cycle, but Miami has pretty much zeroed in on one target for the final WR spot in the class, and it is Worsham. They already brought Worsham in for an official visit before the dead period and Miami made such a big move with Worsham on the trip that he decommitted from Alabama following the visit; now the Canes are in the driver’s seat. Worsham’s mentioned wanting to take OV’s to LSU and Texas A&M to CIS in the past and he may do that before making a public decision, but multiple sources feel strongly that he will be in this class and I put in a UM pick for him.

6. Ladarius Tennison, S, Southwest Brevard County, FL (Rockledge) (Last Month: NR)

Ht 5-9 | Wt 195 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #266 Overall

Evaluation: Extremely productive on both sides of the ball, but is being recruited as a safety at UM. A devastating hitter and is not afraid to violently attack the ballcarrier. Despite being only 5’9”, he is extremely well-built at 195 and is a physical presence at the back end of a defense that will make a receiver think twice about coming across the middle. Well-equipped to be a star in run support inside the box, as he recognizes and diagnoses quickly, and doesn’t hesitate to explode through the line and make the stop. Excellent form tackler and also allows the QB’s eyes and pattern recognition to carry him around the field in coverage. Ideally, he’d be a little taller and is a bit undersized height-wise, but that shouldn’t hold him back much at the college level if he develops the rest of his game properly.

In The Mix: Auburn, Miami, and UNC.

Latest: Tennison makes his first appearance on this board as a former commit that Miami seemed to be out of it for, but that UM has worked their way back into mix for. After decommitting from UM in April, Tennison seemed to be close to a commitment to Clemson, however, the Tigers have filled up quickly at DB and don’t appear to have room for him at this point. Safeties coach Ephraim Banda was able to get Tennison back on campus during Paradise weekend, and a big priority during the event was to try and lock up Tennison or at least make serious headway. The staff feels they are in a favorable position for Tennison following Paradise and will continue to push him for a commitment. Auburn is the school that is going to be Miami’s main competition here, and Tennison is planning a visit to the Tigers after the dead period, a trip in which Gus Malzahn will look to take back the momentum from UM.

7. Kendall Dennis, CB, Lakeland, FL (Lakeland) (Last Month: 14)

Ht 6-0 | Wt 170 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #338 Overall

Evaluation: A speed demon whose explosion leaps off his film. Exceptional when breaking on the ball and is dangerous in the open field when returning a pick. Like a magnet for the football and is a ball hawk on the back end. Shows ability to shed blocks on the edge and contain the run. Demonstrates ability to be a weapon in the return game and as a gadget player on offense.

In The Mix: Auburn, Tennessee, FSU, and UF are involved for Dennis in addition to Miami.

Latest: With UM striking out on Keshawn Lawrence, a guy that has been rising on the board for a while now and is the new top CB target is Dennis. The Lakeland product was an unknown quantity with zero offers until he posted a 4.4 laser timed 40 at the Opening Orlando in February. Since then, he has received 16 offers, most of which are of the Power 5 variety. Dennis visited Miami twice this spring, most recently for the spring game in Orlando in April. He has also visited FSU, Tennessee, and Auburn this spring. In the past month, Auburn and Tennessee have gained momentum here, but Dennis wants to take his time with his recruitment, so Miami needs to continue to build this relationship.

8. Darnell Washington, TE, Las Vegas, NV (Desert Pines) (Last Month: 10)

Ht 6-8 | Wt 250 | 247 Composite: 5-Star, #11 Overall

Evaluation: A physical presence with an incredibly chiseled frame. Long strider as a runner and clocked a 4.78 laser 40, but seems quicker on tape. Great hands and knows how to use his body to make himself an available target. True red-zone weapon that makes quick work of linebackers and safeties. Knows how to high point the ball in traffic. Big target who can run past most linebackers. Has the power and length to really become and standout run blocker.

In The Mix: Washington has a top 12 of Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Michigan, Oregon, Florida, FSU, LSU, Tennessee, Auburn, and Penn State in addition to Miami.

Latest: Washington showed up for Paradise Camp last month, his second trip on his own dime to see the Canes. That’s significant in and of itself, but Washington has also started developing a relationship with Tyler Van Dyke, who got to know him better at both Paradise and the Opening. Going into the Paradise, I was told by a source close to the situation that Alabama had built a bit of a lead for Washington, and now it seems UGA is feeling confident here as well. However, that same source tells me that Miami really did make a move at Paradise and is likely to get an official visit. The Canes rolled out the red carpet for Washington and made him a priority on a weekend that was filled with top prospects, something that wasn’t lost on his family. Michael Irvin and Brevin Jordan also joined in the recruiting effort during the banquet at Hard Rock. Washington and Jonathan Flowe had dinner together with their respective families along with coach Stephen Field after the camp.

9. Avantae Williams, S, Deland, FL (Deland) (Last Month: 12)

Ht 5-11 | Wt 170 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #47 Overall

Evaluation: An extremely hard-hitter that knows how to lower the boom on his opponent. Elite track speed makes him a dangerous weapon not only on interception returns, but kick returns and gadget plays on offense as well. Those type of wheels give him great range on the back end, and you can trust him in single-high coverages to clean up any mistakes. Reads the QB’s eyes well, and closes quickly on his target to pummel him into the ground. Would like to see more ball skills show up, but he is truly an exciting safety prospect with no ceiling.

In The Mix: The Oregon commit is still considering Miami, Florida, and UGA.

Latest: Last month, I said I thought this recruitment would be over unless UM got Williams to Paradise Camp. Well, lo and behold, Williams ended up showing up to Paradise and it feels like the Canes are off life support and back in the game. I’m told Miami and coach Banda never gave up on him even when it seemed like they were out of it, have stayed in constant contact with Williams the entire cycle, and it has paid off with a likely official visit in the fall. A source close to the situation still feels Georgia is in the best position to land a flip if he defects from Oregon, but it was certainly huge for UM to get him back on campus before the dead period. We’ll see if UM can continue to make up ground during the season and Williams is not going to make a final decision until December signing day.

10. Ruben Hyppolite, LB, Hollywood, FL (McArthur) (Last Month: NR)

Ht 6-0 | Wt 225 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #590 Overall

Evaluation: Versatile linebacker that is comfortable playing all around the field. Elite playing speed for the position that makes him a valuable asset for any defense. Quick to close and is a heat-seeking missile to the ballcarrier. Splits gaps in the offense with vigor and is proactive when shutting down a run game. Can clean up a lot of mistakes and false steps with his burst. Will chase down runners that make it past the second level.

In The Mix: The Maryland commit is still considering Miami, Alabama, and Penn State.

Latest: Despite his commitment to Maryland, Hyppolite continues to flirt with Miami and visited campus twice just before the dead period, including for Paradise Camp. Miami is treating him like a priority right now, and Hyppolite is planning OV’s to Maryland, Penn State, Alabama, and Miami during the fall. With only one LB spot left, quite obviously Justin Flowe will have first dibs, but I don’t think it’s out of the question for Miami to make room for both if they each want in.

11. Jaylan Knighton, RB, Deerfield Beach, FL (Deerfield Beach) (Last Month: 3)

Ht 5-9 | Wt 185 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #108 Overall

Evaluation: Elite straight-line speed that makes him seem like he was shot out of a cannon. A true burner that is still physical enough to lower his shoulder and run through contact. Shows an effective jump cut to defeat contain and swiftly run away from the flow of the defense. Love how decisive he is with his cuts and he doesn’t dance around in the backfield; in other words, he gets north-south very quickly. Crafty in leaking out of the backfield as a pass-catcher and is a threat in the screen game.

In The Mix: Knighton narrowed down a top 6 of Miami, FSU, Clemson, OU, Ohio State, and LSU.

Latest: After looking like this was a Miami-FSU battle, Ohio State really made a move on Knighton’s official visit to Columbus during June 21st weekend. The Buckeyes are now considered the likely pick, but I know from program sources that UM has not conceded this recruitment to OSU and still believe there’s a shot. It came out during the Opening that Knighton had been making secret trips to UM’s campus before the dead period, so that’s likely where this confidence comes from. Yes, OSU is probably the pick when Knighton makes his decision (set for July 30th) but this is still worth keeping an eye on.

12. Jaylen Harrell, DE, Tampa, FL (Berkeley Prep) (Last Month: 4)

Ht 6-4 | Wt 235 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #277 Overall

Evaluation: An athletic specimen that plays all over the field for Berkeley Prep. Tremendous explosion off the snap and is very fluid for someone of his size. Uses his hands violently, and is workmanlike in setting linemen up to the outside, only to quickly burst inside. Shows the ability to drop back in coverage if necessary and hold his own. Impressive closing speed when he locks onto a target, and finishes his takedowns in a punishing manner.

In The Mix: Miami, UF, FSU, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State are top contenders for Harrell.

Latest: With Chantz Williams back in the mix for UM, Harrell moves back into essentially the same spot he was two months before on Miami’s board, a back-up option for Williams. This time, though, it looks much more likely that Williams will join the class when he makes his decision later this month, so Harrell is unlikely to have a position in Category20. Harrell was high on the Canes earlier in the cycle, but did not make his scheduled trip to UM for Paradise Camp last month, and it feels like interest is waning on both sides here. Still, if Miami somehow misses on Williams, you could see UM push for Harrell again.

13. Theo Johnson, TE, Windsor, ON (Holy Names) (Last Month: NR)

Ht 6-6 | Wt 240 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #242 Overall

Evaluation: A reliable target in the middle of the field, and can tear it up in the short game. He’s a really precise route runner at his size and is a red zone threat as well. Just a physical mismatch for most defenders out there. Could improve his hands, but is also a freak athlete that combine tested a 4.26 short shuttle time, showing off top-notch short area quickness with his 6-6 frame. I believe he is an elite TE prospect.

In The Mix: Iowa, Penn State, Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, and Georgia are Johnson’s top 7 along with Miami.

Latest: Johnson has been hanging around the fringes of the board for a while now, but makes it on after telling CIS at the Opening he is still planning an official visit to Miami in the fall. He tried to make it for Paradise last month, but had a conflicting school event. Johnson originally put himself on Miami’s radar after impressing the staff in person at a Mark Richt summer camp last offseason, and since then, he has kept in touch and built a relationship with UM sophomore TE Brevin Jordan and coach Field. Johnson took his first official visit of the process to Iowa in early June and enjoyed his trip.

14. Marcus Clarke, CB, Winter Park, FL (Winter Park) (Last Month: NR)

Ht 5-11 | Wt 175 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #985 Overall

Evaluation: Incredible reaction time when breaking on the ball. That type of anticipation has helped him become an interception machine, and his natural ball skills don’t hurt either. Speed demon with great 0 to 60 acceleration. Versatile athlete that is a threat at receiver and returner, and is explosive with the ball in his hands. Average technique as a tackler and could be a liability in the run game. Needs to add more weight, but his potential is very high.

In The Mix: Clarke has a top 5 of Miami, FSU, UGA, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

Latest: Clarke just received his UM offer last month, and things are already starting to heat up between him and the Canes. Miami was able to get Clarke to Paradise Camp just before the dead period, and then Clarke followed that up by putting the Canes in his top 5 he released last week. Clarke is a diamond in the rough type that has recently been starting to climb a lot of boards at big programs around the country, so things are just getting started with him and he seems pretty open to each school in his top 5. Clarke also visited FSU last month.

15. Brian George, CB, Highland, KS (Highland C.C.) (Last Month: NR)

Ht 6-2 | Wt 190 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, N/A Overall

Evaluation: Brings incredible physicality on the outside of a defense. Striking speed to go along with a long frame and strong build. Has the aggressive demeanor to jam a receiver into oblivion. Lives in his man’s hip pocket and is tough to separate from. Above average tackler that could be an asset in the run game and locks down the edge of the defense.

In The Mix: Auburn, Arkansas, and Miami.

Latest: George is originally from Belle Glade and landed his Miami offer back in mid-April, but the Canes were still involved with a few top targets at the time and weren’t making him much of a priority. Fast forward a few months, and UM’s corner board has really cleared out, so Miami has picked things up with George. UM started building a relationship with George by bringing him in for Paradise Camp before the dead period. Aside from UM, George also visited Auburn this summer. Arkansas is involved here as well and George will be visiting Fayetteville after the dead period ends. It’s still early for George, but some at UM feel like they can easily land him if they push for him hard enough.

Falling Off

2. Keshawn Lawrence, CB: Committed to Tennessee.

6. Marcus Dumervil, OT: There’s zero traction going on right now with Dumervil and Miami. He didn’t show up to Paradise Camp and, after talking to a source close to the recruitment, there doesn’t seem to be much mutual interest between the parties. I’m expecting him to end up out of state at this point.

11. Trenton Simpson, LB: Committed to Auburn.

13. Ethan Pouncey, CB: Released a top 5 that did not include Miami.

15. Darin Turner, WR: UM’s prioritized other receivers lately.

The CB situation is def weird man

To me it's obvious it's Rumph. It's been for years. Guy is a former Cane and I love him, but time & time again he gets beat on the trail. I just think we're going to pay a major opportunity cost with his misses at some point in a high stakes game in the near future..

Yes Ivey & Bandy are great, he did a good job with Mike Jack, but there is ZERO reason we should be thin at CB IMO right now & still striking out on the trail. Given the talent that's come through Florida the past 3-4 years this position group should be absolutely loaded and deep just like our WR & RB rooms.

All in all though recruiting looks to be on track though outside of CB. Big year on the field and we could close on a lot of these targets.

This dude is the WOAT poster, but he's not wrong about this.

Here we go with another Rumph bashing thread... I am all for cutting a guy who doesn't get the job done, it is part of life but the blame needs to be spread evenly. I am curious how you only focus on CB's, what about safety? Carter, Hall, a guy who hasn't stepped foot on campus yet and Mr. Knowles. I mean you would take that S core over CB with Bandy, Blades , Ivey, Williams?

LB?? our same freshman trio but who is ready to take over after them? We have some commits in this class but lawd if Rumph had the same "caliber" committed at CB right now this place would be on fire.

Dude all did was just respond the poster who said the "CB situation is weird". LB is obvious a real head scratcher as well.

The Top 15 looks a lot different this month.

Very positive vibe and hopefully we'll be locking down the guys at the top of the list soon.

This is probably the best I’ve ever felt about one of these Freshman 15 list. Of the top 10 only 3 are real long shots and two of those are the type of guys that should be Difficult to land, top 15 out of state generational type players in Flowe and Washington. Excluding those 2 and Avantae Williams, we’ve put ourselves in a real good spot to land the majority of the remaining top 7 out of 10.

Facts...

Looks like we have put ourselves in the exact position we need to be going into the season. We have a seat at the table with a lot of big time prospects (Flowe, Washington, Tennison, Walker) while still making sure we are still locked in on that 2nd group (CWilliams, Denis, Worsham) to solidify their commitments.

Its simple, we win (9-10 games+) and look good doing it, we can still be at the table come Nov-Feb with that first group. We go 8-4/7-5 and that entire first group drops off and maybe even a few from that second group but we can still have a very solid first class for Diaz.

Ball is in our court. Fall ball starts in 2 weeks. Leggo!
