2019 Summer Ball

Mantilla has been added to the Woodstock River Bandits (Valley League) roster

That is another Zamora, not Freddie.
Yep on second look you’re right haha. Maybe it’s for the best he’s not on any roster as of now though. It seems like there’s an inverse relationship between 2019 at-bats and summer league average, albeit this early in the summer. But it’s telling when Lala, Del Castillo and on the pitching side, Federman are off to dreadful starts, while Escala and Chet Moore are raking.

I could be wrong on this. But I’m wondering if these wood bat leagues should be primarily for the borderline/later round draft picks rather than surefire future 1-10 round picks. The best players already know how to play and are fried after a long NCAA season, so another 2-3 month’s of wear may not be in the best interest. 20-40 rounds guys may need the extra competition to get over the hump. Again, not my future prediction or anything, just an opinion (Although many top players are indeed temporary guys as well).

It’s set up how it should be. Scouts wanna see how these top guys handle playing other top guys with wood bats. There is no guarantee an early round pick can hit with wood. That’s why the cape is such an important part of the scouting process

Cape Cod League
Del Castillo got off to a slow start (3 for his first 18) but has picked it up of late. Through eight games, he's 9 for 31 (.290) with 1 HR and 5 RBI. He has 7K/2BB. He has hits in 7 of 8 games with a pair of hits in each of his last two games.

Gates made a one inning scoreless start on June 20th. He gave up one hit while striking out two. He didn't walk anyone in the inning which is the key with him.

Vilar has gotten off to a good start. He's currently 5 for 15 (.333). He has 4K/2BB. He seems to be playing in more of a reserve role with limited ABs in the majority of his appearances.

Toral made his first appearance on June 20th. He's since appeared in five games, going 3 for 12 (.250) with an RBI. He has yet to go deep. Toral has 3K/2BB.

Federman's stat line is ugly after a nightmareish first outing. For the summer, he has pitched twice for 5.1 IP with an 8.43 ERA. He has 7K/2BB. In his first outing he went 3 IP allowing four runs (all earned) on seven hits. His more recent outing was better, allowing a lone run on two hits in 2.1 IP.

Gil is currently 6 for 22 (.273) with 2 HR and 3 RBI. He has 6K/2BB. His last appearance was June 23.

Lala is 4 for 24 (.167) with 7K/1BB. His most recent appearance was on June 19th but remains on the roster. That was his best outing of the summer, going 2 for 4.

Zamora is still listed on Chatham's main roster but is not yet on their active roster. Cecconi still has not appeared either. It's not uncommon for pitchers coming off their freshman season to end up taking the summer off.

Northwoods League
Rivera has racked up the ABs for Kalamazoo, going 12 for 46 (.261) in 11 appearances. He has a HR and 7 RBI. He has 10K/2BB and a pair of stolen bases.

Jenkins made his first appearance for Waterloo on June 18. Since then he has played in five games, going 4 for 18 (.222). He has one of our few positive K/BB ratios at 3K/4BB.

Alaska Baseball League
Jeremy Cook is off to a great start for Anchorage. He has made three starts thus far. He's 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in 15 IP. The K/BB ratio is pretty good at 18K/8BB. Cook picked up the win in his most recent outing, with 6 IP allowing just one earned run on four hits. His WHIP is 1.0 for the summer.

Valley League
Chet Moore has cooled off a bit for Staunton, but is still 15 for 43 (.349) with seven RBI and three stolen bases in 12 appearances.

Mantilla continues to pitch like Mantilla. In two appearances, he's 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 8 IP. His strikeout to walk ratio is fine at 7K/2BB. His problem continues to be how hittable he is. Opponents are currently batting .333 against him. We'll see if he can get in turned around, but that's an early red flag for this league.

Quinones has gotten going of late. He's currently 6 for 20 (.300) with an RBI and 4K/4BB. After a terrible summer last year and not playing much in the spring, it's good to see Isaac have success.

California Collegiate League
Crosbie is off to a rough start for Orange County. He is 5 for 24 (.208) with 3Ks(all swinging)/0BB. He does has a HR and 4 RBI. I will say I wish the other summer leagues provided the depth of stats that the CCL makes available.

South Florida Collegiate League
Pollak is 1 for 9 (.111) in four games for the Palm Beach Diamond Ducks. He has 5K/2BB.

Bailey appears to be gone:

Bailey Mantilla- Woodstock River Bandits- Valley League
Mantilla will come to FSW from Miami where he pitched this season. He is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA through two starts for the River Bandits. He has struck out seven and walked just two in eight innings worked so far.

Not surprised given that Keysor and Van Belle are back and all the freshman pitchers we're bringing in. Best of luck to him

McMahon made the USA Baseball roster. In his lone training camp appearance, he went 1.2 innings giving up three hits and a run. They next play Cuba July 2-6.

McMahon went 5.0 innings allowing a run on three hits with 3K/1BB against Cuba last week. He went 4.0 scoreless innings allowing just two hits with 7K/1BB against Chinese Taipei today.

Nice - the Cuban team is typically strong. Where they playing these games?

Good pitching performances by Gates and Federman in their Cape starts this week.

Federman went 7 IP, 4H, 1R, 6K and tonight, retiring 20 of the last 21 batters he faced. After a poor 1st outing he's now 1-1 with a 4.21 ERA and 1 save in 17.1 IP.

Gates went 4 IP, 2H, 2R (0 earned), 2K last night. He's 0-2 with a 2.71 ERA in 13.1 IP.

Non-Cape Update
Northwoods League
Tony Jenkins is currently 16 for 63 (.254) in 18 appearances for Waterloo. Notably, he has 16BB vs just 6Ks and has 16 stolen bases. Obviously I'd like to see a better batting average out of him, but he seems to be doing a lot of things you would hope to see from a player of his skill set.

Gabe Rivera is having a solid summer for Kalamazoo. He's currently 36 for 122 (.295) with a HR and 17 RBI. There may be no better league than the Northwoods to get game time. Rivera has already played in 30 games and Kalamazoo has 26(!) more games before the season ends. He may well keep piling on the at bats.

Alaska Baseball League
Jeremy Cook continues to thrive as a starter for Anchorage. In five starts, he's 3-0 in 25 IP with a 1.44 ERA and WHIP of 1.08. His OBA is just .159. He has 29K/13BB. His last outing was July 8.

Valley League
Chet Moore has continued to slowly cool off from his torrid start for Stuanton, but is still a respectable 25 for 81 (.309). He has 12 RBI and 6 stolen bases. He has 20K/6BB.

Isaac Quinones is currently 11 for 43 (.256) in 19 games for Woodstock. He has a pair of doubles and has driven in three runs. He has 8K/5BB.

California Collegiate League
Chad Crosbie has turned it around of late for Orange County. He is currently 12 for 47 (.255) with a HR and 7 RBI in 20 games. He has 10K/5BB

South Florida Collegiate League
Pollak continues to struggle going 2 for 15 (.133) in 7 appearances for the Diamond Ducks. He has 6K/3BB. If he can't hack it in that league, he would certainly seem to be in trouble at the ACC level.

It's bizarre how Cook is so good in the Summer, and then struggles to get guys out here. He was probably the best pitcher in the Valley League last summer and it's not the Cape but the Alaska League has solid competition too
