2018 Recruiting

Grad xsfers + foreign players. Good fall back position.

As for the allegations, if they result in penalties, that will mean that something illegal was proven. That's a whole other shooting match. I think we need a clean bill of health as a program, or nothing more than a slap on the wrist at most.

I wonder if we're keeping on Emmitt Williams. No charges have been filed of yet (although the DA has 180 days to do so).

Florida is a hot mess right now. LSU has signed Naz Reid and Darius Days. Kansas has signed De Sousa and McCormack.

I think continuing to court him could be a good thing.

Well. Yes. Maybe. At any rate he just eliminated us. The felony charges have been dropped too.

I guess we can technically count Gak as a newcomer next year, since he'll be a freshman, and he won't a true freshman, which is an added bonus. I know we need more guys, especially if we lose Brown and Walker, or one, but people forget Gak is redshirting and will have 4 years (if he wants them). We also have Miles Wilson, the transfer from Mount St. Mary's who put on a show in the NCAAT last year against Villanova. He'll have 3 years of eligibility. Just throwing that out there.

What is going on in recruiting are we really not going to be able to sign anyone?

Unfortunately, we can never get back the time that this unfortunate FBI cloud has already cost us. Foreign players, JuCos and grad xsfer maybe?

Are we still in it for Vernon Carey Jr. for 2019?

Can't see how we wouldn't be unless something really bad comes out. I have a friend who works in Athletics on the business side and he told me last week that he's hearing good rumors about the status of the investigation. Who really knows though.

Receiving VC's signature for 2019 would certainly take the sting out of next season, which will likely be pretty ugly.

At this point, we’re almost going to have to rely on grad transfers only.

If the investigation doesn’t conclude soon, it’s sure to used by other teams recruiting guys like Carey Jr. who probably is announcing in the fall.

I think your friend will be proven right but ... (1) no telling how long that decision and word will take to "get out" (another year?) and (2) damage has been done that can't really be undone.

So I am assuming there will be 4 open scholarships for 2018.

1. The Current Open Ship (which has been open for some time),

2. Newton,

3. Walker to the NBA, and

4. Brown (although stupid at this point) / Transfer (e.g. Miller)

---------------------

Here is how I would fill them:

1. Grad Transfer Big Man / JUCO Big Man

Example: Yuat Alok [2018 JUCO C plays at Chipola College in FL]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGf33j9Bxp4

2. Grad Transfer PG / JUCO PG

Example: Brian Warren [2018 PG plays at Tyler]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yw1RD4r6e5I

3. 2018 Florida Recruit, and

Example: Tai Strickland

4. Best Regular Transfer Available (someone who may have to sit out) / 2018 Recruit Anywhere

Example: Kevin Zhang

Those are some solid players hopefully we can pull them. Honestly at this point I'm just hoping we don't have to trot out any Wellness Center All Americans or kids off of the Pike Basketball team.

At this point, we’re almost going to have to rely on grad transfers only.

1. Please note I don't blame the staff for what happened with the FBI. With that said, I hate our response. If this is the strategy (rely on transfers), then that is a very risky strategy and foolish from a numbers standpoint. Transfers won't really be announcing until after the season and by that point it is going to to be very unlikely to get any 2018 HS recruits or JUCOs. Essentially we're putting our trust in players that don't exist at this point because who knows who will transfer and who knows if they want to be here.

2. Even if the FBI destroyed our chances with every big recruit, how about taking a lower ranked player? Especially someone from the state of Florida. Someone that may be missed by other teams, someone we can easily scout or someone that develops late (like his senior season). It is important to create some separation between the scholarships; you don't want a roster full of elder statesmen. This is why I hate the notion of relying on grad transfers.

3. I still believe we will have 4 open scholarships at the end of the season. I think it is less likely that Brown will leave, given the injury, but I am still banking on a transfer out. So you have:

1. Open Ship
2. Newton
3. Walker
4. Transfer Out

In addition, this "Open Ship" has been open for the two prior seasons. This makes it even more frustrating because it could have been used to develop a player or anything. It would also be one less ship we need to fill going forward. My guess, given the last two seasons, the FBI bullchit and lack of committed players, that this Open Ship will remain open for a third straight season.

I don't like our chances going into the off-season trying to fill 3-4 spots with transfers.

4. So our roster looks like this going into next season:

PG: Lykes
CG: Brown (he could play PG too)
SG: DJ
SF: Amp
PF: Huell

--------

G: Wilson
F: Waardenberg
C: Izundu
F/C: Gak
C: Miller
