2014 Philosophy - By the Numbers

I think I should make a few more Philosophy threads just to be sure we're all on the same page... Maybe something about Nietzsche next time? Or Kant? As in...we Kant get off the field on 3rd down?

If we are going to invoke philosophers by name in regards to the current U football program there is only one to focus on... The average and not noteworthy Mediocrites... Greek patriarch of pablum...

Still not sure why we put the onus on our front 7 when our secondary is the deepest, most talented (on paper) group we have.

We had no DL the last few years, not much versatility at LB, but yet put them behind the 8 Ball every....*******....play.

This.

Expose our weakest link while neutering our strongest. Yet, every single presser Fat Al and Dorito insist it is just poor execution, one guy missed his assignment, mental errors etc.

It's staring them in the face and they refuse to even acknowledge it.

Get these guys the **** outa here already.

In the end, these pieces of **** brought a Temple defensive philosophy to a premier program. At Temple, it makes sense to keep everything in front of you and to hope that the other team makes a mistake because they didn't have the athletes to play aggressively, attack, and take risks. But here, to use that philosophy is ******* criminal. What we're watching on defense is coaching malpractice of the highest order. I honestly get sick to my stomach watching our defense. I want to lose the remaining games on our schedule by 100 pts each, and I want these incompetent, fat pieces of **** to never set foot in Coral Gables again.

If this coaching staff stays we will one day wake up and be a good team...or beat a good team...or never mind I'm going back to bed.

I don't really understand the relevance of the offensive part. We're 4th in the country in yards per play. It's not like we're Stanford and Wisconsin and running it 40/50 times a game. Also what is Miami 38th in on defense?

That was actually the point, as stated in the original post. It's relevant because we're NOT running 40/50 times a game trying to play a particular brand of football and highly ranked on defense like they are. Yet, we're still at the bottom of the barrel in plays.

Anybody familiar with Football Studyhall?

It's a really good site that delves deeper into numbers than just basic total yards, passing yards, rushing yards etc.

Somebody should e-mail Bill C. and see if he'd be interesting into looking at yards per play variance.

But we're inefficient on offense and are good at chunk/big plays. We run a relatively slow pace with how much we check at the line, so we do slow the game down, but we're still going to have those big plays on offense unless we run power every time which would be kinda stupid. Was your criticism just that the offense didn't match the defense, or was there something specific you think the offense should do from a philosophical stand point that would help the team?

I'm still curious what Miami is ranked 38th in on defense because I can't find it.

We are 112th of 128 teams in opponent's time of possession. Everyone knows where I stand on this: we prefer death by 1000 stable, surefire cuts. Proof? We are 15th (!) out of 128 teams in opponent's yards per play.

How is this relevant: Basically, we prefer to give up a consistent 5 yards.

Agree with most of what you said, but the fact that we are 15th in opponents yards per play is not in and of itself indicative of what you are claiming. Plenty of attacking teams with lots of TFL that average low yards per play. I mean, would you rather we average MORE yards per play on defense?

I think the stat you are looking for is variance in opponents' yards per play. As far as I know nobody tracks that stat, but would be very interesting to see. Guess is there would be very low variance in the case of our defense (arguably a bad thing).

I think you misread the statement. Yes, it is indicative of what I claim when you combine it with the immediately preceding statistic (as in, the sentence before). You can't be low in yards/play and also be 112th of 128th in opponent TOP without essentially conceding yards.

Of course I don't want more yards per play. But, I'd be happier with more yards per play if we could balance it better with getting off the field. It speaks to a conscious decision between aggressive and conservative (concession) styles.

Fair enough, but it's hard to know how much of that is being caused by the defense, and how much by the offense's feast or famine quick strike offense. My guess is some of both

It wasn't a criticism necessarily. When I went to look at stats, I didn't know exactly what to expect. It was an observation of a statistic I had thought we'd improve. We should be running more plays. Outside of that early period that seems scripted (I don't know if it is, but looks like it), we're very slow to get plays in and have little rhythm.

As for the defense being 38th (as of 10/21), see image:

According to that site, total defense. It's written in the original post.

It's like our coaching staff is waiting for Vinnie to toss five interceptions in every game we play.

These guys were born of this philosophy back when it would work more often than not.

Lu used all stats vs FBS opponents only. That is why there is the confusion.

Its a more accurate view of things.

Interesting read. Our 3rd down offense also plays a big part in this. We have to be the worse 3rd down team in the country who you factor in what our offense and defense does on those downs.
