Canes in the Rankings

The Canes women had the weekend off while the men's team went up to Virginia to face No. 4 and defending NCAA champion Virginia of Friday. The Canes No. 1 Omar Aly was injured and had to sit out. The Canes were completely outmatched, failing to win a single set in a 7-0 beat down. They had to regroup quickly for Sunday as they went to Virginia Tech. The Canes are rnaked No. 39 while the Hokies are ranked No. 54. The Canes need to beat either Virginia Tech or No. 24 Florida State to have a chance to be selected for the NCAA tournament so this was a very important match for the Canes season.
It didn't go well. Not only was Aly out, but William Albanese who usually plays the No. 5 singles position was out as well. Everyone had to move up in from their regular position and the two freshman Bernard Tefl and Daniel Shebshayevich were in the lineup as well. Shebshayevich did well to win his match but the rest were not successful and the Canes went down 6-1. They still will face No. 14 Duke, No. 8 UNC and No. 9 Notre Dame. Their last regular season match against the Seminoles on April 19 could be the match to decide if the Canes go to the NCAA championships or go home for the third consecutive year.

is tennis season over ?

Not quite! The beginning of April is a very busy time for me at my job and I've been slacking off a bit. There are only two matches left in the regular season for both men's and women's teams.

The men (13-9, 3-6) were doing well and climbed as high as No. 39 but are now on a five-match losing streak. They were just slaughtered by Notre Dame up in South Bent on Friday. They play Boston College today and should win that one. Their final regular season match is against No. 31 Florida State at home. Their ranking has fallen down to No. 48 but if they can beat the Noles on April 18, they have a chance to be selected for the NCAA tournament. If they lose, then they'll be sitting out for the third year in a row and for the fourth time in the last five years. The Canes have never missed more than two years in a row.

The women (15-4, 9-2) looked to be getting back into the top ten but were completely outclassed by No. 1 Duke and No. 6 North Carolina and they have fallen to No. 16. They go up to play No. 15 Clemson today and it will be a good indication of whether they can challenge the top two in the ACC tournament or just fall back to 5th or 6th place in the conference.

Canes men's team break their losing streak today by beating Boston College easily 7-0. They are now 14-9 and will face No. 31 FSU to finish out the season. HUGE match with the Noles.

Canes women's team also got a big win today by defeating No. 15 Clemson 4-3. It was close and the Canes had to come from behind but they did really well to win four singles matches on the road. The have Virginia and Virginia Tech left on their regular season schedule.

Senior Day tomorrow! The seniors Aly, Flores and Soto have a chance to finish their Canes careers with a bang by defeating the Noles tomorrow!

The Canes tennis team were humiliated today on Senior day at Coral Gables by the visiting FSU Noles. This pretty much ends any chance the Canes had of making it to the NCAA tournament. They will now miss the tournament for the third consecutive year. That has never happened. The seniors made it to the NCAA tournament during their freshman year but they failed to lead the team anywhere during their career. Wishing the new recruits coming in next season can bring the Canes back but it would be surprising if the Canes did not fall completely out of the rankings next year. It's anyone's guess when the Canes tennis team will sniff the NCAA tournament again. Sad to see how things have fallen.

As bad as the men's team is, the ladies are good. They are ranked No. 15 this week and hosted No. 9 Virginia today for Senior day. They defeated the Cavaliers 5-2 and earned a share of first place for the ACC regular season with North Carolina, Clemson and Virginia. In next week's ACC championships, the defending ACC champion Canes are the second seed.

The 9th seeded Canes must go up against No. 8 Florida State again in the first round. Even if they win that, and that's a big if, they will play No. 1 Virginia in the quarterfinals.

More details about the ACC Tennis Championships!

Both men's and women's tournaments are being held in Cary, North Carolina. The men have 12 teams and the women have 15 teams fighting for the title.

The men's tournament starts on April 24 with No. 8 seed Florida State vs. No. 9 seed Miami. The Canes will be looking to win their first match in the ACC tournament since 2010. Their best finish is runner up to Virginia back in 2008. They have never won the ACC title since joining the ACC in 2004. With their national ranking at No. 53, they would have to beat Florida State and then No. 1 Virginia to get a berth in the NCAA tournament. Seeing how they lost to the Noles on Saturday, it's very difficult to see how they could win on Thursday. But this has been a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde team this year so it ain't over till it's over. But it sure looks like it's over.

The women's tournament starts on April 23. Miami is the defending champion and No. 2 seed. They will not play until Friday. If the seeding holds up, they will face Notre Dame in the quarterfinals. The women are peaking at the right time and could very well make it to the finals to face either No. 1 UNC or No. 5 Duke for their second consecutive ACC title.

The Miami Hurricanes exited the ACC Tennis Championships very quickly today, failing to win a doubles or singles match before going down to Florida State 4-0 to end their season. The Canes have no chance of being selected for the NCAA tournament now and this marks the third consecutive season they have missed the tournament. This is the first time this has ever happened in Miami Hurricanes' tennis history. A lot will have to happen next season for Coach Mario Rincon to get the Canes going in the right direction again.

On a brighter note, the #2 seeded ladies play Notre Dame tomorrow.

The Canes ladies beat the Notre Dame Irish today by a score of 4-2 and advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tennis Championships today. They had to endure a log rain delay but finally finished off the Irish. They'll probably play Virginia in the semis tomorrow. They already beat they once this year so the Canes have a great chance to get to another ACC final and win their second consecutive ACC title. Go Canes!

The Canes ladies must have been feeling the 7 hour rain delay from yesterday because they had nothing against Virginia today. They got blown off the court 4-0 to end their try for a second consecutive ACC title. They now wait on the NCAA Selection on April 29, Tuesday at 5:30 p.m EST to find out where they will be seeded. The men have no chance of being selected again this year.

Very bad news for the Canes ladies as they prepare for the NCAA Championships. They just suspended their No. 2 player, 66th-ranked Kelsey Laurente for whatever reason.

Laurente Suspended

It looked bad for the women's team after suspending their No. 2 player Kelsey Laurente right before the NCAA tournament (she must have REALLY screwed up). The women have made the Sweet Sixteen the last eight years but that looked to be in jeopardy. But they sure came through this weekend. They beat both Boston University and No. 18 Oklahoma 4-0 to advance to their ninth straight Sweet 16. their run will probably end there as they will play No. 3 UCLA next.

Losing to Notre Dame? Jesus Christ! I purposely tanked the 2nd set against ND, so I could kill their player from heatsroke in the 3rd set (I **** near did, he collapsed and the EMTS had to attend to him with me up 5-1. He was crying and out of his head, and I rejoiced. ).

The doubles format has killed college tennis. (and the foreign student/European and South American professional players that make up every team now.)

Go women Canes! (is losing her a difference maker? No.2 singles is usually a stack position anyway, and what on Earth could a womens tennis player do to get suspended?)

Nine schools have teams in both the men's and women's NCAA Team Championships. Very impressive and shows the commitment the schools have to their tennis programs.

The Miami Hurricanes women's tennis team's season ended on Thursday with a 4-0 loss to No. 3 UCLA. The Canes defeated the No. 1 doubles team but dropped the other two to lose the doubles point and then got steamrolled in the singles. Everyone having to move up in the singles with Laurente getting suspended really hurt. The No. 12 Canes were looking for their 6th consecutive Elite Eight appearance but had to settle for their 9th consecutive Sweet Sixteen. Not a bad season (fantastic when compared to the men) but still dropped down a couple notches from last year. Wagner (singles) and Albuquerque/Riobueno will continue play in the individual tournaments.
