“Special” teams thoughts

Carter Davis has been the biggest surprise on the team. Dude went from making 36% of his kicks over 3 years, to being reliable.

It's such a drastic improvement that I'm still nervous every time he attempts a FG. It's like my brain can't accept that such a 180 for a K is even possible.
I agree. I was wrong about him.

I don’t know if we have a Special Teams room

But if we do I’d bet one day Mario knocked on the door, poked his head inside, and said “hey guys what do you think about having the OL block on returns?”

Toney is one more fair catch inside the 10 from being replaced by Samson back there. Have to get our money’s worth out of him.

The bad:

There is not a single play in the game of football that ****es me off more than punting in the opponents territory and getting a touchback. Nothing. It does things to my brain that I can’t say out loud. We did it twice.

The good:

I truly hope Carter Davis had the post game “celebration” he deserves. Another clutch kick when we threatened to shoot ourselves in the foot. Touchbacks on kicks are a blessing. We had good coverage on the one that wasn’t

Malachi is just a matter of time before he houses one. He will probably have multiple punt return TDs this year before it’s over

All in all I’d say the group is doing pretty well. Had Day (I think it was Day) stopped that punt at the 1 you could probably give this group a really good grade last night
Agree on all points especially the 1st! Day has lagway level awareness. That **** was crazy. But Davis & Mali have been a revelation. Also add the better tackling overall this year has helped as well.

I’m sure the coverage improvements have something to do with better depth. Makes sense that just having better football players out there would help but I’ve not really looked at the personnel on the field

I know this is easier said than done but I would have been OK with Day just catching the punts. We still would have forced UF to start inside the 10. And you never know how a cylindrically shaped ball will bounce.

I am glad you posted about this issue since I rarely post.

Day had this issue twice in this game and he and others had similar issues in previous games. The solution is to use Malachi Toney and Keelan Marion or even Josh Moore to down punts inside the 5-yard line. They have great ball skills and field awareness.

Punt coverage has been good through four games, so it makes sense to keep Day in for other punting situations. Hopefully, the coaches will find suitable replacements for downing punts since we have great options in our wide receiver's room.

Lost track of the ball twice . He has to be better

Yup. They were both excellent kicks. Landed at about the 5, they should have been downed. If you want to split hairs of hairs, it'd be nice to have them land like a sand wedge, but come on. These are college kickers. He landed the ball right where he wanted to, it's on our kids to get down there and down the ball. It's not like it was a 70 yarder, we have more than enough time to get 40 yards down the field, find the ball, and down it in play.
