Perhaps someone can explain this to me. In the 4th quarter when we had 4th down at the 3 yard line, the HC decided to kick a field goal rather than use that one play to try to score a TD. Apparently, he reasoned that we had a better chance of making that kick and then later scoring a TD AND thereafter making a 2 point conversion from the 2 yard line to tie the game. If you do not trust the team to score in one play from the 3 [earning at least 6 points so that another TD wins the game] how do you play for a tie game by stopping TAM and then scoring on our next possession AND then scoring 2 on one play from the 2? This felt very corch-like to me.

It was the wrong decision, period.

From an analytics standpoint, the numbers say go for it, and it's a pretty strong "GO". Also, the models do not take into account how the rest of the game has gone. Meaning, they just know you're down 11, it's 4th and Goal from the 4 with 4 minutes left, etc. And it says, "Go for it". If it was able to account for how the game was actually playing out, it would've been an even stronger "GO", because the A&M offense is archaic and putrid and they hadn't done **** all night. So, you go for it, even if you don't get it, they're on their own 4 yard line and odds are you're going to get the ball back with decent field position. It was the wrong decision by Mario, and frankly, is the reason he gets the flack he does as a gameday coach. This isn't even close to the first time he's made a poor decision like this in his career. (Full disclosure, I wanted Mario more than any other coach and still do. He's the man for this job, 1000000%. He just struggles with stuff like this)

For all the offseason talk about how "competitive" he supposedly he is he looks completely deflated.
If he is who we think he is, he will continue to work and grind and get better. It is game 3 of a new system, and if we're being honest, more like game 2 because BC doesn't count. Look at the progress he made last year. No reason he won't get more comfortable.

imagine how frustrated he must be when he's got seconds to unload the ball and receivers are either not open or running the wrong routes.... He presses sometimes and forces the ball. IMO, that's when he makes the errant throws.

It feels like it's time for one of those heart-to-heart talks between TVD and Gattis , similar to the one he had with lashlee last season. There's no reason why Gattis can't mix in some plays that focus on TVD's strengths along with his slow developing ones. Get him in a rhythm where he's good.

"The game was lost when we ran three times in the red zone and kicked a field goal down 17-3. You can’t say you have the best QB in the country and then show a complete lack of faith in him".

"Maybe someone who charted the game can correct me, but I can’t remember a single contested catch in 41 passes. “NFL open” does not exist in our passing game. We have body catchers, not snatchers".

You can't be shocked when Gattis runs the ball inside the red zone and at the same time be highly critical of our WRs. So, you wanted Gattis to pass in the red zone. To who? Who was catching the ball? According to you, no one was going to catch the ball because the entire game, no one could make a contested catch.

The complaint against Gattis is that he ran TWO QB draws while in the red zone. That's the complaint.
when youre down 17-3 it doesn't matter at that point. you needed two scores and you dont have any quick hitting plays or drives that can get you quick points. we run 15 play drives that chew clock so its gonna limit the amount of possessions left in the game. it was an absolute fail. also, stop w the throw to who nonsense. you have to give them a shot and outside of the drops, we aren't scheming anything to help either the QB or the WRs. the entire offensive scheme passing the ball is a disaster and its going to take a look in the mirror moment for the supposed elite OC (looking at his results at UMich he was anything but) to get us back on track. currently w this O, were losing 4-5 games.

Eventhough I feel like saying Gattis ***ing suks, I'll keep it civil and say he is just a complete mismatch for Miami.

I know TVD missed throws and WRs dropped passes but ultimately the pace is what is so bothersome. I said it during the Southern Miss game, besides the refs slowing the game, Gattis slow *** pace made the game boring.

I get we have personnel issues and idiots on this board are downplaying the X injury but Gattis might be our biggest flaw.

Uninspired. That’s the feeling I had leaving Kyle Field. It’s not the right thing to say as the owner of a fan website, but it’s the truth. It was a boring game with a familiar result. Let’s get the obvious out of the way: it's early, this is a building process, and it's way too early to make any sweeping observation about the Cristobal Era. But this was a major missed opportunity to build momentum in recruiting and within the fanbase. Some specific thoughts:

- We paid too much money for nine points. Gattis is accountable for the end result, no matter how fluky (first team since at least 2000 to have 27 first downs and zero touchdowns). Our pace was puzzling to me. Is there a distinct advantage to going no huddle when we move so slowly?

- The game was lost when we ran three times in the red zone and kicked a field goal down 17-3. You can’t say you have the best QB in the country and then show a complete lack of faith in him.

- The past few years, and this weekend in particular, really hammered a point home: WR has become a Top 3 important position in football. Look at the Dolphins on Sunday. Maybe someone who charted the game can correct me, but I can’t remember a single contested catch in 41 passes. “NFL open” does not exist in our passing game. We have body catchers, not snatchers. We should not miss guys like Rambo (undrafted), Harley (undrafted) and Restrepo as much as we do. This is Miami. The whiffs in the Transfer Portal really showed up on Saturday.

- Upon rewatch, I’m not as down on TVD. He played bad, but his degree of difficulty was off the charts. I thought back to my first time watching him at Paradise Camp. I expected a big, mechanical QB who would drive the ball but struggle to create. Instead, I saw an instinctive athlete who changed speeds and arm angles and thrived with a fast tempo. It feels like we are trying to put him back in that box with the slow-developing plays.

TVD is tough and will hang in until the last second to make the throw, but he should have more quick-hitting options to get in rhythm. It reminds me of Kaaya under Richt. There was a regression (and four losses) followed by schematic adjustment to get the ball out of his hands quicker. Those changes were in response to poor OL play, which isn’t really our problem. But they got results. I hope we see similar adjustments before the losses pile up.

- Some of our recruiting victories over the SEC showed up on Saturday. Jalen Rivers was moving people and is a huge reason for our improved running game. Leonard Taylor brings special interior rush ability, which is the best way to disrupt a passing game. James Williams missed a key tackle on the Achane TD, but otherwise was everywhere as a versatile weapon. We need more like those guys.

- The running backs ran hard and finished above their weight class. I was disappointed we didn’t have anything special cooked up for Jaylan Knighton in the passing game. He is our most explosive player and we need everything we can get.

- Happy for DJ Ivey. His game elevates when he tackles with physicality. The more he plays with a confident edge, the more he will finish at the catch point with length and timing.

- In general, this game looked very much like what we saw on Greentree. Struggles with downfield passing game, improved OL, strong DL, elevated DB play. For all the talk about Greentree All-Americans, the players generally play like they practice.

- Jacolby George needs to lock in. He’s clearly the most talented pure WR, but when Joe Rose asked Mario about him this AM the first thing Mario talked about was off-field reliability. This is a huge opportunity for George and he needs to seize it.

- Kamren Kinchens is playing faster every game. His football IQ is as good as it gets, and he is really starting to trust his instincts and pull the trigger.

- I like the way the pass rush is trending. We are 5th in the nation in sack percentage and a lot of people are contributing. That rush will lead to wins in ACC play.

- The most encouraging long-term sign is the OL. We looked strong against an SEC team and Mario is recruiting behemoths. If Miami becomes an OL program, it will raise our floor.

Overall, the improvements in physicality were apparent but we gave away a winnable game. Muffed punts, drops, penalties, missed kicks. Before the season, I expected a year like Mario’s first at Oregon or Richt’s first at Miami. That’s still the projection. This offense and pace will lead to a lot of close games where anything can happen. Time for the coaches to earn their money and make the necessary adjustments.
I've been screaming (who in this fanbase hasn't?) for more involvement of Knighton in the passing game. I'll never know why Lashlee (and thus far, Gattis) won't do it. The few wheel routes Lashlee used were impeccably timed and executed, but otherwise, Knighton was barely used as a receiving target.

My opinion is.. and he’d never admit it… if you don’t convert 4th and goal it’s over and the defense probably deflates and A&M marches the field and scores again and it’s 24-6.

Looks a lot better if it’s 17-9 and you fight until the end and MAYBE have a chance to tie… which we did have the chance.

We seemed to play the whole game to compete and not to win. Just how it felt and looked. Maybe it’s not reality and it just happened that way.

Boom.

Just cause you don’t like the system doesn’t mean it won’t work and is not effective now if you are arguing this system doesn’t fit our current roster I can get behind that but it seems like most of the fan base just doesn’t like the style and what’s Mario to go Air Raid

We got up to the line and did the hard count every single play. A&M didn’t jump a single time. Then did check with me and drug the play clock down.

We could have really caught them off guard snapping it quickly a few times and probably could have pulled them offsides a few times after that and get a free play and maybe luck up and catch one downfield.

Didn’t even try.
this isnt not true. They jumped multiple times, what are yall watching man?!

It's the right decision because it is still a 1 possession game. Don't convert and the game is over. You take the points there.

bingo. I dont get it. everyone else in the country can see the most important position on the roster looks absolutely uncomfortable in this scheme. we turned a top 10 pick at QB into a dud in 3 games. reinstall some of lashlees passing concepts and pick up the ******* pace. this 15 play 8 min drives aren't gonna cut it all game. I said this after southern miss and I was proven right again after ATM (also LOL at the posters that **** on the atm d all week leading up saying they're not good blah blah blah and now saying oh they're an amazing D). they were down to legit no one int he secondary after suspensions and targeting calls. any decent OC capitalizes there. again, for all this talk about speed in the offseason, we dont look like were built from a schematic standpoint to take advantage of it even if we had it. we do a terrible job of getting quick hits to guys in space and letting them work. rooster is an electric athlete esp out of the passing game and finally healthy and you dont even use him? the OC isnt creative, hes stubborn in this scheme, and hes already struggling recruiting his own position group right now. it isnt gonna get any easier. our former WR coach was negative recruiting his former boss and that guy looks absolutely correct.

This is exactly how I felt. Seemed like we were just trying to show up and compete…not win the game.

they jumped twice I think. I do think jay mainly referring to the slow nonsense were doing. wed rush to the line and just sit there and do check with me for 40 seconds

that Parrish drop was the worst of the game.. with the way he moves.. he likely scores

Yup. Corner on the boundary has his back turned. He likely has to make one guy miss and this is a TD. Absolute absolute worst, it's first and 10 from the 15 yard line.

He drops this, we miss a FG on the next play, and the place is going ballistic. Even though we held them to a 3 and out after this, their punter uncorks a 57 yard punt, and the next drives starts from our 9.

This was an absolute killer. Plenty of blame on the staff, and that's correct. But as a coach, what else do you want? One of your most electrifying players in space, wide open, the ball hits him directly in the chest. Make a play.

I mentioned to my bud during the game . . . I did not like TVD's body language. That looked like 1st half UVA TVD . . . not the guy we saw later in the season. He did not look confident.
Thank you. It was clear as day, and I was shocked. 0% chance anyone rewatched that game and doesn’t notice it. There are no excuses or “buts” for it.

Jumped once and had the one blown dead from a safety trying to time up a blitz.

The hard count and check with me should have been scrapped or we should have taken advantage of that more than 1 time. It reminded me of the Richt thing where they clap and the back comes from Pistol to the QBs side.
