Thursday Recruiting Chatter - 1/31

**After feeling good about Miami coming out of his official visit weekend, momentum has shifted back in favor of Mississippi State for S Martin Emerson. After checking in with a source close to the recruitment, I am comfortable flipping my pick to the Bulldogs here.

**Things are trending in the right direction with UCLA DE transfer Jaelan Phillips and it seems he is a take for Miami after talking to a team source. If I could put in a Miami pick for him I would. I have heard nothing new regarding VT DE transfer Trevon Hill's situation.

**There’s a few guys still on the board that seem like 50-50 toss ups right now, and those would be CB Christian Williams and OT Darius Washington. While I haven’t heard enough to make a pick either way, I’m told the staff still likes their chances with both prospects.

**This is the final official visit weekend before the dead period and recruits begin signing next Wednesday. The only scheduled visitor at the moment is DE Khris Bogle, who is making his second OV to Coral Gables. While I’m comfortable saying UF is leading here right now, Miami is getting the last shot at him to swing him back and anything can happen if you get the kid on campus for an OV. Follow who is and has been visiting with our OV tracker (linked here) pinned to the top of the recruiting board.

**2020 offers have been going out like crazy the past week or so as UM continues to really expand their board at all positions under Manny Diaz. Another new name to keep an eye on that UM is evaluating is OT Andrej Karic from Southlake Carroll High in Texas. At 6’5” 240, Karic is a rather thin, but athletic, tackle prospect with upside, and sports early offers from Michigan, Oregon, TCU, Nebraska, and Washington State.

If you got dropped off blindfolded in the Panhandle with no idea where you were, you’d never guess Florida, or basically anywhere that wasn’t coastal south of Orange County, and that’s being generous.

dont think people get that Northwest Florida is far different than anything Orlando South. hes actually more at home and closer to it in starkville w culture, people, and food

That doesn't excuse the staff from consistently missing on DB targets, even depth guys like Emerson. No more Dee Delaney's or Jhavonte Dean's, we never have enough depth because we can't close. Can't argue that.

Question: if Miami and the region by default gets you 4star caliber DB’s, what’s the major problem with Banda and Rumph? Their coaching is not the issue. Their recruiting leaves room to be desired? Of course it does. But they’ve done their job developing.

Another question, if you were to fire Rumph and/or Banda. Who do you hire that would do such a monumentally better job? Let me guess. Corey Raymond? Mel tucker? I legit want to hear some names. I’m not being a smartass, I just want to hear the fix since there is such a major problem.

Gun to your head if you have the option whether to hire a good recruiter/average coach or a good developmental coach/average recruiter in the secondary at UM, give me the coach. We saw what a trash DB coach was here under Golden, and now we see the difference with two quality DB coaches the last 3 seasons. Again I’m not being a smartass, but those with the torches and pitchforks who would y’all hire for a secondary coach realistically?

beyond successful if you include Portal guys. We will only have a top 35 class with "recruits" but with Portal guys we easily have a top 10 class. Richt left us in a horrible position where nothing Diaz could do would help MUCH in HS recruits for 19 so he did the right thing and loaded up on transfers.

And once you get past the name, you’re at ‘what major did you take’ and from there, the reality is most P5 football players are similarly limited in their course of study.

I agree about MST, especially if you check all the civil service depts in small rural towns there’s a ton of those grads. But don’t sell UM short on grads. We offer an excellent education in areas other than undergrad. Med, Law, Architecture, Music and more. There’s a *** load of Alumni out in the world most making a very good living and paying back to the U. Not too shabby for a small privat school

When one of them actually gets into coaching like Cadillac did. So far the only greats have been Mike Rumph and Earl little.

This is our depth chart at DB next year, with stars in parentheses:

CB: Bandy (4), Ivey (4), Blades (4), Frierson (4), Couch (4), Bethel (3)
S: Hall (4), Bolden (4), Carter (3), K. Smith (4)

I expect some growing pains because of inexperience. But I also expect quick improvement and quality production since we've seen that for three years with this staff. Combine that with the talent, and we should end up with an excellent DB group.

If these guys don't develop, or don't have what it takes, Rumph and Banda will deserve the criticism. But their track record to this point is player development and four-star recruits. As a result, DB is the least of my concerns.

Manny should've let go either one of rumph/ banda now when it wouldn't have effected recruiting. Also baez im tired of him tweeting the weather recruits don't care about the weather.

We will need a HUGE class at CB next year though
