Thoughts on the Stanford win

Said all night I’d love to see more 4 wide with Johnson and Toney on the field at the same time. You can still run duo and run into the A-gaps from 10 personnel. ****, god forbid it takes a defender out of the box, too. But Johnson looks very solid. Patient route runner, good hands, doesn’t look panicked in any way. He looks like an adult out there.

Would love to see 3/7/10/17 with Fletcher or brown in the backfield for a decent chunk of the game. Again, just because you’re in 10 doesn’t mean you can’t be physical and run down hill. Bring Marion in and put him into the slot instead of at X and you can run jet motions to him to keep the 2nd level honest.
I've been screaming about exactly this for weeks! Not necessarily here on the board but during games and between friends for sure.

Offense looked a lot smoother out there with Moore/Johnson than Marion and going tempo. More of that.

And there was definitely more outside runs lol. It wasn't a total overhaul but funny enough that's when things started opening up.

thank you for pointing out that fletcher ought to get the bulk of the carries ... he's produced ... lyle is talented, but he has to take it back from fletcher who has a strangle hold on the position imo

There is simply no reason for Mark Fletcher to have a stranglehold on the position….None…And I don't mind him at all. Nice player.

The first hour of this game looked familiar. We'd been playing bad football since the fourth quarter of the FSU game, and this felt like a Greatest Hits of our struggles: pre-snap penalties, no explosives, dead runs between the tackles. Everyone left on our schedule is better than Stanford, and those teams will beat us if we play like that.

But the rest of the game was productive. We covered a 30-point spread and got young players reps. Zero giveaways. Best of all, we stayed healthy. So how do we build on the good stuff going forward? Here are some position-by-position thoughts:

- I'd love to see more tempo for Carson Beck. He's a naturally quick operator- quick release, quick hands, quick decisions. When he's at his best, he's spreading the ball short and intermediate. The explosive plays will come without forcing them. Cam Ward was a totally different player- he's a basketball guard who could always hold the ball and make spectacular plays. Beck isn't going to elude rushers or throw off schedule. Get him in rhythm and let him heat up. He's 30-4 as a starter for a reason and we need to trust him.

- This offense is at his best when Mark Fletcher is at running back. His power-running energizes the team. He's good in the passing game, too. Treat him like 1A and it will pay off over four quarters.

It was nice for Jordan Lyle to get some confidence. The coaches are force-feeding him because they know he has juice. There may be some fit issues with our running game, as Lyle is patient and and likes slow-developing runs more than brute force. But both sides need to make it work for our offense to be at its best.

One player I'd love to see more often: Girard Pringle. He's a tough, one-cut runner and his acceleration gives us an element we need.

- After missing Jeremiah Smith, we signed another South Florida receiver who happens to be the best freshman in America. Malachi Toney is a superstar right now and we have him for two more years. He's really improved his contact balance. One thing that separates guys like Toney, Xavier Restrepo and KJ Osborn is how hard they work in the weight room. That lower-body and core strength shows up on the field.

My co-host @Peter Ariz has been calling for more Tony Johnson and the veteran delivered on Saturday. I think you can play him and Toney together.

There's a reason why Josh Moore and JoJo Trader got so many snaps last night. The coaches know we need more athleticism on the field. Moore had more success than Trader, but I expect them both to continue to get opportunities.

- The tight end position is struggling. When Elija Lofton is right, he's making the first guy miss every time. That's not happening now. He had some chances in space and looked lumbering. We need to improve there.

- James Brockermeyer struggled run blocking, including a poor rep on 4th and 1 that cost us a drive. He had some run-blocking issues at TCU, too. We hide some of that with our emphasis on double-teams, but he needs to get back to the way he was playing earlier in the year.

- Markel Bell is quietly having a strong season. I don't know what his NFL future holds, but he's giving us a steady presence on the left side. He was dominant last night.

- Overall, everyone knows we need to get more explosive on offense. 5.5 yards per play is a poor number against a terrible Stanford defense. There was progress with the turnovers, but we need more to beat the good teams.

- For all the uncertainty on offense, it's safe to say our defense is legit. We're 10th in scoring defense, 10th in yards per play, 10th in yards per rush, and 12th in yards per pass. We're 33rd in takeaways now but I think that number will keep going up with our pass rush.

- Stanford was particularly overmatched inside. David Blay ate them alive. I loved what I saw from Armondo Blount. What he might lack in pass-rush finesse, he makes up for with power, speed and effort. I expect him to keep expanding his role because he has the right approach.

- Rueben Bain is getting held on every single play. It's a shame he only has two sacks, but anybody watching our games knows how dominant he is on a snap-to-snap basis.

- One of the good things about last night was that we got real experience for a ton of young players. I saw Donta Simpson, Herbert Scroggins, Booker Pickett, Jaboree Antoine, Dylan Day, Luka Gilbert, Girard Pringle, SJ Alofaituli, and more getting meaningful work.

As we know in college football, the momentum from this finish doesn't necessarily carry over to the next game. We've seen teams look different week-to-week across the country. It's a good week to get on the road and go 1-0. Go Canes.
Everything stated about the offense, from Brockemeyer, Lyle, WRs, TE (Lofton probably hurt from all of the blocking he’s had to do and we’ve asked for more Schott, etc) - has been stated in here adnaseum.

The problems on offense and the lack of adjustments made by Mario & Shannon is what will doom this season.

It’s super concerning that we came out like a dead fish for an entire half vs Stanford.

They must make changes to this offense and stop forcing square pegs into round holes.

Trust the offensive line to handle one on ones and run to your strengths, which are the tackles.

I’ve been begging for more pace and space . Playing in these tight sets and slow pace at all times is playing with fire. It takes away from our talent advantage which helps underdogs . You can lean on the run and power later in games after teams have been worn down.
Couldn’t agree more, we try to bludgeon teams from the first drive in instead making them cover the whole field, tiring them out and then hitting them with the power game. I’m worried last nights effort while an improvement will only solidify Mario’s belief in this caveman style.

I think a lot of you are confusing outside runs with our RBs bouncing outside on their own accord.

I’ll give it another rewatch today, but I think I counted 7 designed outside runs out of 44 carries. One of those being the Toney hero play that any team with FBS players blows up…thank god we have Toney.

Groundbreaking stuff.

I got "the look" and the "they can't hear you" from my wife last night after screaming about the lack of holding calls on Bain, it's downright criminal at this point.
And why are other teams' tackles allowed to false start repeatedly against us...asking for a friend.

It’s like we do inverse of what we should do. Ie spread and pace. Play for points as @k9cane says and then pound em in 2h. We are made to play from a lead with this DL

Stanford is not good and in no way should have held us to no ******* points in the first quarter. Somebody is too ******* stubborn to keep running the same **** over and over when teams are clearly geared up for whatever the **** is our offensive game plan. Yea we overpowered a weak opponent. The stubbornness of the offense is depressing. The sad part is, some asshat will say look.. we scored 40 points doing it that way. That bull**** is a recipe for more losses. I am not impressed with the game plan at all but I will thank the football gods for Toney and Fletcher.

Oh yeah, those mother ****ers better start calling the clear holds on our DL (Bain). It's getting waaaay to obvious to ignore. Even the announcer was calling it out. The acc is ******* stupid if they continue to let teams hold Bain all game. The guy would be getting so much more press and Miami is really the only threat from the acc in the playoffs.
I'm ******* ****ed, don't ask me if I'm alright.

Agree. I said the same thing during the 2nd half on the game day thread. We ran Fletcher a couple of times off tackle, instead of just up the middle. We also let Beck run RPO, which seemed to freeze the defenders up some. Lyle and CWH also had a couple of good runs off tackle. It’s crazy that it took them that long to figure out that running off tackle or out of the RPO was better than just straight up the middle into stacked fronts.

The run game took off last night when Beck started faking like he was doing read options. Maybe it's just a coincidence with better play up front after halftime and a commitment to Fletcher. Or maybe it's a sign that the run game would really take off with just a little bit more creativity.

It's a god darn shame we don't run any sweeps with Mauigoa and Cooper's athleticism on the outside.
We tried on the second drive when we missed the fg. I believe McCoy moved early but they were pulling.

The slow start was frustrating, but not surprising. We needed to get the "wiggles" out (IYKYK), had we not rolled them I'd be more concerned.
When the announcer is basically calling the refs out, that's a problem.
