Thoughts on the Notre Dame game

- Bottom line, this was a statement to the nation. Notre Dame had a Top 5 offense and a Top 5 defense last year, and they brought back 11 starters. Miami was clearly the better and more physical team. We haven’t accomplished what we wanted in the first three years of Cristobal, but we are positioned right where we need to be. Now it’s time to put together a complete season.
This part. Right here. Say it again! Say it louder for the people in the back!!! SCREAM IT!!!
We were CLEARLY the better AND more PHYSICAL (not FyZiCaL) team. That was the biggest takeway IMO. Aside from when we got conservative and even then not so much, there wasn't a single point in the game where my bunghole puckered up thinking the inevitable dream-crushing, soul-stealing, A-phvcking was coming like it had so many times in the past. I KNEW we were going to win because I watched Blay, Scott, Moten and the other dudes on the DL more than handle their biz against ND's OL. I KNEW because our OL played stellar as always. This is so refreshing. THIS is the blueprint.

Nice write-up. Last year's team was easily playoff caliber, despite the obvious holes on the defensive side. The QB was that good. But yes, this year, on paper, is the best team in 20 years. Schedule is tough, but the hardest opponent is already a Win.

Lets hope Notre Dame runs the table here on out.

I don’t know who the RG for ND is but I’d love to see his PFF grade. He was absolutely ******* abused.

I’m trying to figure out a way to better highlight one of these plays from Justin Scott. It’s actually the first play from the Love compilation thing @TipDrill posted from Twitter

It’s an NFL draft worthy highlight

I wanna say the PFF was below 20. Can't recall but think someone posted.

It’s time to shift our perspective as fans. The players have a different mentality– they need to take the process step-by-step because they’re actually doing things. But as fans, we can look ahead and hope. And my focus has shifted from Charlotte to January 19, 2026 at the Rock. Because, for the first time in 23 years, we have a team that can legitimately compete for a championship.

The Canes played on Sunday, so we were able to watch college football all weekend. Call me a homer–and I’m a proud one–but we can compete with anybody. The Saban-era Alabama squads aren’t hiding around the corner. The reign of terror is over.

We saw all the top quarterbacks in the country. Is Carson Beck not at least in the conversation with those guys? He’s 25-3 with five Top 10 wins.

We saw the top offensive lines, including Notre Dame. Are you trading our giants for anybody?

We saw all the defensive players. Was anybody more dominant than Rueben Bain?

This is a real team and a real roster. Maybe we’ll flop like the last twenty years. I have no idea how it’ll play out. But we have the goods. Some position-by-position thoughts below:

- Beck managed the team to the winner’s circle. I liked how he stood in the pocket- he’s tall and sturdy and showed good wheels on that first down that got called back. He already trusts his protection and did not look skittish coming off injury. I expect him to get more comfortable and let it rip as the season moves on.

- We obviously went into a shell late in the game. The criticisms are fair. My personal sense is they just didn’t trust our passing offense yet. This is Game 1 against an elite secondary and a team that finished Top 10 in takeaways. On our end, Beck just started throwing in mid-summer and we were playing two true freshmen. I think if this game was in Week 5, we would’ve put the ball in Beck’s hands more often.

- Our offensive line is the best in America. I’d buy an argument for Utah or Penn State, but I’m taking our guys. Notre Dame only had four hurries, which was their lowest total since they played Navy in 2017. We also outran them. Ultimately, we beat Notre Dame at its own game. As first reported in the Bank, the light has come on for Samson Okunlola. He has extremely quick feet and a former wrestler’s ability to turn and steer guys. He got major reps at LG and performed at a high level.

- People thought I was hyping up Malachi Toney too much, but the truth is I held back. He’s been The Man since camp started. One thing that stands out is his relationship with Beck. They have elaborate handshakes, they work together off the field, and Beck has been effusive in his praise on and off camera. Those two will do huge things together this year if they stay healthy.

- When he came back from surgery in mid-spring, CJ Daniels made a catch in the IPF that was even better than what he did against Notre Dame. He has that ability to go outside the frame and make plays. Beck mentioned in his post-game that Daniels is the first player he really connected with when he arrived. I expect that relationship to continue to develop over the season.

- During spring practice, the two most hyped players on the offense were JoJo Trader and Elija Lofton. We didn’t talk about them much during camp and they weren’t featured against Notre Dame. Now that the game is over, we can talk about the reason: they were banged up and missed time. Both are getting close to 100%, so the issue now is just timing up with Beck. I expect both guys to be a huge part of the offense going forward.

- Our third running back was dragging Notre Dame defenders. There's a level of depth and size in the running back room that reminds me of the top SEC teams in the 2010s. It wears on defenses over time. Marty Brown proved that he was our biggest coup of the second portal window. I thought it would be impossible to land him given the depth in the room, and Cal and Nebraska were close. But his addition was critical for games like this one. And for those who question why I like Mark Fletcher so much, it’s for games like this. When you play big-boy football, you need big boys. We were the more physical team and Fletcher helped set that tone early.

- Our front seven showed they were playoff caliber. Notre Dame has one of the top rushing offenses in America, and we held their backs to 77 yards. David Blay looked the part of a playoff-level war daddy, Ahmad Moten had multiple blow-bys on pass plays, and Justin Scott made one of the plays of the game running out on the WR screen. Armondo Blount played with high intensity as the #4 DT. It should only get better- we won’t face a more potent running game than Notre Dame until the playoffs.

- I didn’t see a better defensive player this weekend than Bain. He's not only a closer as a pass rusher, he's also an elite run defender. His knockback power is rare. Akheem Mesidor has been taking his care of his body like a pro (see my interview with him here) and his twitch has gone to another level. Outside of Greentree and maybe Utah, it's hard to imagine two tackles matching them outside. That duo obliterated Notre Dame on the edges.

- I thought Corey Heatherman’s defense looked as advertised. We lined up better, we communicated better, we tackled better and we played fast. There were still some busts, including a really bad one on the TE, but it’s going in the right direction. We need that progress to continue instead of going backwards like we saw after UF last year.

- Aside from the miscommunication, Jakobe Thomas and Mo Toure were a breath of fresh air on the defense. They want to hit anything moving. We lacked that edge last year.

- Jaden Greathouse had 102 yards against Penn State and 128 yards in the championship against Ohio State. He was on a milk carton on Sunday. Keionte Scott was outstanding in the nickel, and our four outside corners took turns erasing Notre Dame’s receivers. Aside from an insane Malachi Fields catch against good coverage, their WRs did nothing.

- As Pete says, it sounds a wee bit different coming off Carter Davis’s boot. He showed to campus with an explosive right leg and developed quickly as a field-goal kicker. I’ve seen him make it during team drills from 55+ yards away and he can probably break 60. Our coverage units were swarming with young talent, and I'm more comfortable with our returners (Keelan Marion on kickoff, Toney on punts) than at any point since Mario got here. Need to clean up the snap operation, but other than that it was a good day on special teams.

- Everything around the game felt right. The stadium was packed, the stars were out, the whole country was watching on TV and the game delivered. The UM brand is in top shape. It could not have gone better from an optics standpoint.

- I have a lot of respect for Notre Dame. They have great coaching and the players care about the right things. CJ Carr might’ve been the most impressive young quarterback I saw all weekend. He looked quick moving around and his no-look TD was unbelievable. He really kept them in the game despite subpar performances from Jeremiyah Love, the offensive line and the wide receivers.

Two things…

I get what you’re saying about the conservative play but we’ve seen it before and we’re not paying Carter Davis millions of dollars. He needs to trust in the horse we put our money on. Not getting a better kicker in here was bad recruiting. The guy he got couldn’t beat out a dude that made two kicks last year. The games can’t come down to that or were not in the ship.

Second Aguirre doesn’t belong out there. He gets swallowed up in any block and is slow footed and slow to react. Many of the qb runs could have been limited if was a dynamic player of any caliber. He is a poor mans Flagg. Might be a decent player but not a championship level lb in any sense. Wiley has to take those reps before the season gets thick. We have some dynamic qb runners on the sched and two are in rivalry games. Aguirre wouldn’t even be a serviceable spy in those games.

The running game was working-why go away from that when there is not a safer play in all of football.

The only play I had issue with, was the run up the gut on 3rd and 4 right before the go-ahead FG.

I expected a short pass from Beck to put the game away. But a lot could have gone wrong-the least of which being an incomplete pass that saves ND a time-out and gives them 1:30+ on the final drive with a time-out in their pocket instead of 60 seconds and no timeouts.
Beck was 12/12. Never put the football in any danger. Toney was uncoverable. ND couldn’t pressure the QB. But yeah let’s call HB dives and go 3 and out. Genius

Wow @ @DMoney talking about 1/19/26!

I was looking at the schedule earlier. We have 5 games in November. It feels like we finally have the depth to overcome the end of the season and crummy finishes. I'm not making any predictions but it feels like we'll be in a spot to play meaningful football games late in the year and that's a blessing given how few of those we've been able to play the last 2 decades.
I'll go ahead and say it - if we leave the Louisville game undefeated, we will go perfect in the regular season. As far as what happens after that, we'll just see what happens. But, we could be looking at a perfect season after Louisville and if that happens, anything that occurs in the post-season will just be icing. We will officially have re-asserted ourselves as an elite team.

Let me eat crow for a moment. I had doubts about our Oline and about Beck. I don't know that Beck is a top 10 QB in the country, but our team looks like a complete package compared to last year, and we were still a solid group last year. I'm hyped and cautiously optimistic about the season, but we definitely walked away looking like the strongest team in the conference after 1 game, but again, it's only 1 game.

Before the game I was terrified of our K’s. But considering this kid just boomed a game winner on national TV against an arch rival top 10 match up…I feel pretty good about his kicking going forward. That was the biggest moment of his career to date and he excelled.
That was good from 60

IDK man.... Like I get always looking for something to improve on, every game there are mistakes and yes going conservative could have almost lost us the game, but we won, you play to win an we did it so have to give some credit for a plan working.

Also, I recall a few of the scouts saying Beck has a tendency to throw it to the wrong color jersey too often. Some of his INTs in that Bama game werent just great defensive plays, they were flat out bad throws that should have never left his hand.

Let me ask you this, at any point did you feel like ND had a ton of momentum? Even when they tied us I maybe got a lil puckered but that was by far the extent. Outside of that we dominated in the trenches. Giving them an INT or something to give them some juice and suck the life out of the crowd was just a reward/risk analysis. The secondary is their strength, WR is not our strength, couple that with bad weather, ball getting wet every time it touches the turf, week 1, lots of variables. I mean is the argument if we had thrown more we would have won by more and that would be better? Or that the conservative nature could be a problem in the future? On the latter yes it can be but I doubt you have a perfect storm like what we saw two nights ago, top ranked secondary, known ball hawks, new (young) WR core and new QB that just started throwing 4 months ago, wet night, and they ND defense played **** near 2 high safeties the entire night. Reminded me of last years FSU game where FSU sat back and Cam kept trying to bait them into walking up so he could sling it but there were content giving us the 5 yd carries. We legit beat ND at their own game.

Now I do think we could have gotten more creative with some very low risk throws that are essentially a long handoff but Beck didnt seem to accurate on those, he skipped one to Toney, one was behind Marion, his middle of the field accuracy was great, short stuff not so much and long ball we only saw a few and a couple were PI calls or him throwing up a prayer.
So let me just say that I ecstatic about the win and it's not my intention to minimize or take anything away from a W. To answer your question, I felt very comfortable with the game up until ND tied it up. We were clearly the better, more prepared team, so much so that it would have taken us helping to keep the game close. And i believe that's exactly what happened. No it wasn't turnovers nor dumb penalties, but ND already had the refs doing everything they could to keep them close and our lack of creativity and imagination didn't help either. Short, safe passes or just some variety in the run game, instead of dive, after dive, after dive, would been more appropriate IMO.

the 12 play drive out of half time was run-favored. But **** 3 and 4 after two stuffs, throw it.
Essentially put the game on the leg of a dude with no prior experience getting it done. Even if we still had Borregales I would have been frustrated at the decision

We got away with it though just hope we make some changes for the future

Why not scheme up easy throws? Carr's first 5 were to get him in rhythm. Lofton, hurt or not, will be a mismatch coming out of the backfield. (H back) Use the tight ends. Throw to the backs. There are other types of screens as well. I just think we make it harder on ourselves than it has to be. Roster is loaded. Play calling is what concerns me.

I am now firmly in the Refs dictating our playcalling in the second half.
Having rewatched, which I seldom do, The ND OL holds and the Dbs were getting unlimited free passes. They were clamping a bit on Toney and I hated the last run call, but understand it from looking at it through that prism. Thought that kicker was gonna shank it right and 10 short. So glad to be wrong.

the conclusion is that because it was Game 1 we were more conservative than what we might be down the road. @DMoney 's hypothesis/opinion makes sense. time will tell. if we continue doing the same ****e, then it wasn't Game 1, the lack of reps between Beck and WRs etc.

time will tell.

Dawson's explanation yesterday, however, makes the most sense as to the final drive. he got conservative on third down because he wanted ND to burn their time outs and knew the defense would get at least one sack.

that was the plan AND IT WORKED. Can you give the guy some f@cking credit?
After the fact people are never wrong. If we had passed on 3rd and 4 and it went incomplete, the crew would say how dumb Mario?Dawson were for not running clock.
