They shouldn't have lied after being asked about it....probably would have gotten 5 games had they told the truth...

AJ Green got 4 games for $1,000 in impermissible benefits. And he was candid when confronted by compliance.
How many players at big time programs do you suppose are driving around in fancy cars?

For 16 years now, it's never the school's fault according to insiders. Yet as soon as the story moves on, of course the thing last year was not well handled by the school ... but don't dwell on last year ... and by the way, this new thing, it's totally different and not at all the fault of anyone other than the kids involved.

The LEAST compliance could have done is not blindside our own staff.

Compliance has no relationship with the any of the athletic coaching staffs, be they football, hoops, baseball, etc
and nor they should have.
There should be a separation of duties and all should work to do what is right for the university.

Do yourself a favor and read dycane and Franchise's post on this matter.

Thanks Peter.

Seeing as it happened, my only wish is that the decision could have been made much sooner rather than later. I love what Grace brings to the table and feel he'll certainly be missed, but we'll adjust the what we do to compensate. Love for AQM around here is based more on his potential than anything he's done on the field. Love Stacy Coley, but to my thinking he's had one big game and that was last season against FSU. He's our most experienced receiver, but I think our young receivers are just as talented though though admittedly not as experienced. In any case, I'm glad it looks like he'll survive this mess virtually unscathed.

Before closing, this was pretty darn selfish on the part of those players involved. We still have not finished our last punishment and are starting anew with a new coach and staff. Very disappointing.

Coley had more recieving yards vs conference opponents than any other wr in the acc last year. He didnt just have a good game vs fsu. The dude was one of the top wr in the acc in the 2nd half of the season.

Smh @ all of this. Go to any major college football campus and see what the kids are riding in. We can't get out of our own ****** way.

People keep reducing it to "it was just rental cars". What is the value of those impermissible benefits? If Grace was riding around in a car all last season what is the monetary value of that?

If an agent handed him 10k to lease a car he'd be done for the season and so would AQM. The NCAA and compliance probably don't see a difference between a cash payout and the value they're placing on riding around in those cars.

That's because we have a bunch of dimwits on here that think we should be running compliance like a Southern fraternity. The worst case here was UM suggesting a bull**** punishment and then handing it off to the NCAA, which would open the door for Emmert and his gang of lackeys to start sniffing around. Even if these guys used these cars for a weekend, the value of that benefit would be in the thousands. (And, my guess is that the use was much more rampant, meaning the value of the benefits could easily be in the tens of thousands.) Then you have a report that interests in future earnings were involved, coupled with the players lying. And any moron should recognize that the latter would necessarily delay and complicate the investigation. Without knowing all the specifics, it's pretty easy to surmise why UM made its decision and the reason for the timing.

No, any REAL Moron would know that the fix is already in and the greed will kill the golden goose of college football. From Marky Mark to ESPN, the story lines have already been written and the winner$$$ picked. Heck, ESPN is now sweating the olympic ratings shamble that was Rio and hoping that the 20 teams only have a shot reality can be hidden for a few more years as the cable cutting goes futher en fuego . If you can't see the NCAA is $$$$ teams lackey and Emmert (or his successor) will hammer us the MORE we appease, if not now, then in the future, than they have already won...Keep whistling past the graveyard.

Yes, because how it's done at "real programs" is an excellent model at UM.
SMH.
Tell us again how UM should have handled this differently.
Seriously, do share with us.
Tell us how it should be done.

Yeah, it's not the nursery rhyme Marky Mark tells you...So when was the last time the NCAA visited Alabama? Mike Dubose?

Welp, if as Pete reported they began by washing their hands of it and handing it over to an outside counsel they don't have a regular relationship with, then I uses I'd point you right to the beginning. From that point on, it was downhill.

This school will never win a meaningful game again. I don't care who we hired. The first section about outside counsel is all you need to know. They have known for 5 months about the cars...

If you are a student athlete, and you violate Bylaw 10.1 (Unethical Conduct, which includes "(a) Refusal to furnish information relevant to an investigation of a possible violation of an NCAA regulation when requested to do so by the NCAA or the individual’s institution," among other things), you will not be reinstated after being found to be ineligible. That is a black and white rule.

There's been way too much BS info posted about this matter, and way too many tantrums thrown by posters. Time to move on. Get over it.

its a myth that if they hadnt lie they wouldve been kept..them mo fos was dismissing them regardless...this school continues to get B*tt raped by the fear of the ncaa its tooooo funny. like seriously...watch ole miss...even with their transgressions watch how they operate..**** watch psu...but these numnuts in our admin think the ncaa is the feds or something...and lay down no matter what the case...lol @ hiring outside people to tell YOU WHAT TO DO..what the **** is the job of our compliance exactly?

The only thing I'm asking at this point, since I'm already at the point of acceptance and moving on:

Can someone explain to me how we have the worst possible "received benefits" in the history of "cheating?" Let me get this straight. Off the top of my head, Nevin Shapiro offered guys a handful of miso soups, all you can drink sprite at Benihana, a disturbing amount of lollipops, some drink tickets at the club, some boat rides, and the ability to look at strippers. Now, we have guys going for joyrides in ****** loaner cars no one will actually think is yours and you know you have to give back?

Come on, man.

WTF is going on here, fellas? I've heard insane stories at other schools and this is the stuff we're doing? I know a handful of genuine, old school friends of the program who have to be shaking the **** out of their heads.

I mean, I'm gonna regret asking but what exactly does it benefit the NCAA to "put the fix in" against us?

UM football is run like the GOP, trying to scurry favor with its foes in DC.

The bylaw citation is great evidence of what we're ostensibly doing wrong. Either you believe almost no other kids at any other programs ever get their stories wrong ... or maybe we go about it differently from other places.

Again, GA is SEC and AJ Green -- coached by the same guy purportedly blindsided by UM -- got 4 games for a $1,000 benefit to which he immediately confessed receiving.
