The Canes face USF for the 6th and likely final time this Saturday. No idea why we ever thought it was a good idea to play them ever. It'll all be over soon.
The Canes go on the road for the first time this season as they make the trip up to Tampa to face USF. The last time we made the trip up to Tampa, both teams were pretty bad and UM pulled away with a 6-3 victory. Fast forward 2 years later, UM is ranked #15 in both polls and USF is...well...not.
1. Where they are in the standings/rankings:
Look at these teams. The winner of this Conference gets an automatic bid to a BCS Bowl game. And seriously, what the **** is up with them calling themselves the AAC? Are they stupid, or are they just trying to be ****s to the ACC? Maybe they want to be listed before us in the phone book or something.
Anyways, you can see from the standings that USF does in fact suck. They opened the season by getting blown out at home to an FCS school, McNeese State, who hung 53 on them in their own building.
Then they traveled to Michigan State and lost 21-6 despite playing half-way decent. The week after that they lost at home to FAU 28-10. The same FAU team that we sleep-walked through to a 28 point win in our opener. USF has had a bye week to prepare for us. They're gonna need it.
Here's what FAU fans are saying about USF:
From: The Owl's Nest
We ran for 300 yards on those jokes. USF failed on a redzone attempt and proceeded to meltdown the rest of the game because of it. It must suck to suck.
2. What happened the last time Miami played USF?
From the Associated Press:
That game was so fun to watch. B.J. Daniels couldn't play because of an injury, so when Denzel Perryman DP'd one of their awful backup QB's they had to resort to 3rd and 4th string guys. So awesome to see that unfold. It also was the tipping point for Skip Holtz getting the pink slip. Everything came full circle last year since USF's lone victory over us in 2010 prompted Randy Shannon's firing and Golden coming to town. Now that I think about it...thanks, USF.
3. Who to be scared of:
Marcus Shaw
Senior running back Marcus Shaw is one of the few bright spots for USF this season. He's not a bruising back by any means as he's just 5'9 and 180 lbs., but he's producing for them. Shaw is averaging 7 yards a carry on 57 attempts for 398 yards. 94 of those yards came against Michigan State, so it's not like all of his stats came against crappy teams. Since USF's quarterbacks are so awful, they'll need to ride Shaw all day if they're going to move the ball against us.
4. Player that will score against us:
Andre Davis
Miami recruited Davis briefly during Randy's last year for the 2011 class. Randy getting fired ended any chance of landing him and he stayed home at USF. He led the bulls last year in every receiving category and is once again leading the team in receptions (9) and yards (116). If the Bulls manage to put a drive together, he'll make for a good redzone target. Here's some highlights of him over the past couple of seasons:
He did nothing against us last year. Here's to hoping that happens again.
5. Person that will **** you off:
Elkino Watson
This guy...
He was a 4 star DT at Booker T. Washington High School for the class of 2011. So naturally Randy pretty much ignored him the whole time. So when Al had to cobble together whatever kind of class he could in 2 months, he made a strong pitch for him to stay home. We needed help on the interior of the defensive line that year too, but that apparently didn't matter him. And it wasn't enough keep him from leaving town.
Oh well.
6. Some other guy:
Aaron Lynch
Lynch was all everything coming out of Island Coast High School in Cape Coral, FL. He originally committed to FSU but switched to Notre Dame and enrolled early. As a freshman in 2011 he played in 12 games, starting in 6 of them. That year he had 33 tackles (7 TFL). He also led the team that year in both sacks (5.5) and quarterback hurries (14). He was awarded a 1st team selection on the FWAA Freshman All-America Team. In the spring of 2012 he decided to transfer to USF and sat out the 2012 season. The reason given was to be closer to home and his girlfriend who was going to school in Tampa. Here's him as a freshman at Notre Dame:
The guy's obviously talented. Let's just hope we can keep him away from Morris and his injured leg.

Andrew said:At the start of the second quarter, the defense made a series of plays that changed the outcome of the game. USF had scored ten straight points and was driving into FAU territory following a 41-yard run by Marcus Shaw.
The Bull's had first and goal from the 8-yard line, but that's when the Owls took a stand. Linebacker Adarius Glanton kept Shaw out of the end zone on first and second down, but it was Randell Johnson who made the two crucial stops.
Johnson met Shaw at the line of scrimmage on third down, and then tackled him for a seven yard loss on fourth down to turn the ball over.
"We just kept fighting," Pelini said. "If you can defend the run against [Willie] Taggart coached team, you got a good chance to win."
USF had been effective running the ball all season long, but FAU did a nice job of bottling up the Bull's rushing attack.

2. What happened the last time Miami played USF?

From the Associated Press:
MIAMI --Stephen Morris threw for 413 yards and three scores, Herb Waters had an 87-yard touchdown catch for Miami's longest reception in more than five years and the Hurricanes rolled past South Florida 40-9 on Saturday. Clive Walford (135), Waters (130) and Phillip Dorsett (12 catches, 111 yards) all topped the 100-yard receiving mark for Miami, and Duke Johnson rushed for 66 yards and another score for the Hurricanes (6-5).
