Not that I know his ability but Wilkerson being the backup left tackle doesn’t give me the warm and fuzzies
Kid is a 6-6 330 former basketball player, and according to this staff he has NFL potential
I mean supposedly the staff has been high on McCoy for years and said he has NFL potential too but he has been nothing but mid

Other than back up center being passable, I’m most worried about McCoy at tackle. I’m no scout but I felt like he was the weak link last year especially in pass pro. A bunch of Becks picks he got dusted off the line. Now he’s at a position where he we be in more space.

I was less worried as they had him consistently over Cantwell with all his buzz (best ACC lineman my midseason takes were out there) but now it comes out that Cantwell is struggling in pass pro. Some confirmation bias on my worries about McCoy. Hope it’s all good and I trust Mario on OL but replacing 4/5 OL spots is hard for anyone even Mario.

Yet he is still a starter.

Actually the staff has always said McCoy has NFL potential at tackle, the position he is playing now.

We just watched this movie with Mesidor, guy playing out of position and being called mid because of it. Let the season play out before calling the guy mid

The OL performance you see vs. Stanford should be a far cry from the one you see in November.

We are talking about two true freshmen being heavy in the rotation, a third being a player who mostly played FB last year, and a fourth who has mostly been injured here. Every spot on the OL is being manned by someone playing a new position.

If you look at the entire expected eight-man rotation:

Samson (G last year), now at LT
SJ (FB last year), now at LG
Rodriguez (started at LG vs. Florida, played some C)
Buchannon played sparingly, now at RG
McCoy played LG, now at RT
Cantwell new to college, played LT last year and now playing G
Congdon played T, now playing G
Meriweather played G and now is RT

That'll take time, my friends.
Atta boy - we need something to kill the rat poison around these parts

SJ was at LG last yr, and Buchanan was RG last yr, so there is no position change there if they remain in those.

Not true about messidor. Messidor has led the team in sacks every year he played. He only played DT in 2024 but kicked back to DE at the end o the year and still led the team in sacks. Messidor has been good from day 1. But because he wasn't elite and not the fastest guy fans wanted the younger more athletic guys cause they thought he had peaked.

McCoy hasn't been good either year he has started. You can say out of position all you want but he has played more guard in his life than tackle

SJA starting is pretty much solidified based on the reports. I mean Danny has pretty much told us he’s starting without saying the words.

Congdon is the interesting one. I can easily see him starting vs Stanford (or not) at RG. Either way, Congdon and Cantwell will rotate against Stanford.

The more interesting point is where Cantwell will rotate at. Will he rotate at LG, or RT?
RT would be my guess or whatever position our swing OL ends up starting at.

It’s not even the backup center that is a worry for me. Honestly, I don’t trust Rodriguez until he goes out there and proves it on the field. I know it’s limited sample size but he’s never looked great out there. Granted, some of the tape is more than a year old and guys could get better as they age. But every time I’ve seen him, I’ve never thought to myself “I feel comfortable with this guy as a full time starter.” Hope he proves us dead wrong and has an all-ACC type of year.
Do players get better as they age, or as they play?

The McCoy skepticism has gotten weird. He's started the last 25+ games for us, but all anyone wants to remember are a couple instances where he lost in pass pro. Anez Cooper had some ungodly whiffs in 2024, plays where he didn't block anyone and he'd just spin around in a circle, but there was no such slander about him headed into 2025. I get that he's playing RT for the first time since 2023 but have some faith people.

Lake thinks SJ is the starting LG at Stanford.

But he also thinks Lyle is great too so he's obviously full of it. Yeah in shorts and shells and when there a giant hole in front of him I'm sure Lyle is amazing

Edit.....LG, dumb typo noticed by Htown

Love the size, the potential, elite coaching & early schedule should allow for development. Yet the OL is extremely inexperienced, not a starter back in the same position as last season & development is critical to whether we make another playoff run.

Funny post and commentary. You could graph the optimism/ pessimism scale as we get closer to 9/4 without knowing anything.

Last week we were going to kill Stanford. The Vegas 24 1/2 not nearly enough.

Get closer to kickoff and panties tightening up. The o line won’t get it done. I love Lance but his comment makes it sound like the guys have never played football and haven’t been practicing against a very top tier D line.
