Spring game thoughts

I know it's a long shot. But the kid is so uber at everything else, you got to give him a full year of focusing on nothing but his passing fundamentals with a real coach and trainer. Mario said he had a great Spring and he was saddened that Brown was so off and couldn't show his progress to the fanbase. So I'm going to trust in our HC's judgment and see where Dawson can get him. Worst case scenario, he recognizes he'll never be an NFL QB and switches to WR or TE as a 3rd Year Sophomore.

And to be fair, as I mentioned in another thread, with his style of play, non-contact scrimmage settings for a guy like Jacurri aren't really fair. It's like asking a boxer to not throw jabs during a fight. His game is based on athleticism and setting things up with his threat to run.

I'll buy that

But I'll also buy we showed at most 80% of what they've installed so far......BUT that remaining "20%" isn't some secret weapon that'll magically propel Miami's offense to a top 5 unit.
Absolutely.

crazy how Cyrus Moss still looks so small at his position. I saw some big boys on defense especially at LB which we haven't had in a long time. And TVD definitely needs to get the ball out ALOT SOONER!. 1ST drive of the game we had a untouched defender for a sack on TVD which is the same issue as last year. if he is gun shy again this year we are in trouble. and Emory looks the part. I was bigger on him than everybody on here for the most part and it looks like I was.............
No you weren't bigger on Emory than anyone on here. I watched him play. A good friend who lives in Navarre Fl (near Milton) told me about him. My Stepson was born in Milton...I owned a Home near Milton for 9yrs.

It's honestly hard to take much from these spring games, especially with the amount of guys we had out. I'll give two thoughts, one on an incomer and one on a returning player who's performance yesterday did nothing to change my opinion of him from last year.'

- Bain is a gem. He's quick twitch and relentless. I think this kid is already 280+ pounds which means by the time he leaves here he'll grow into at least a pass rushing DT, if not a full time DT. He's going to make a LOT of money down the road.
- Mario's #1 priority this recruiting cycle should be finding an elite QB of the future, cause I'm not sure that guy is on the roster. This was my first time seeing Emory and he didn't look horrible or completely lost for a freshman.......but I'm just not a fan of Jaccuri's game. He's inaccurate as all **** and makes some bad decisions on where to go with the ball. He's an athlete playing QB who's isn't crazy athletic either.

This is a spot where you tell Ruiz to open the checkbook and use a decent amount of the 2023 allocation toward securing a top notch QB. It should be right up there with securing some top notch WR's, CB's, and DT's in this cycle.

I hear you but when you can’t hit routine throws to open receivers, it’s concerning.

Did you see the teams we lost to last season? Expecting us to beat who we should is a stretch. I’m beginning to think 7 wins is our ceiling.

If Mario can still recruit with a two more years like that we’ll be a 9-10 win team by 2025.
Our starting OL in ACC was:

John Campbell
Jalen Rivers or Laurence Seymour
Jakai Clark or Jonathan Denis
Anez Cooper
DJ Scaife

We started Jake Garcia vs. UVA
We started Jacurri Brown vs. GT and Clemson

Brown played majority of game vs. FSU
Garcia played majority of game vs. Duke
Garcia played majority of game vs. Pittsburgh

We had 3 healthy scholarship RB's.

1 who had fumbleitis
1 who was overweight
1 who was solid
We had to play a walk on RB in some conference games

-Our best WR missed 6 games
-George, who IMO was our 2nd best WR coming into season missed 6 games

-Our co starting TE missed all of conference play

We completely flipped the OL.

TVD back in comfortable offense

I think our WR room is improved a good bit Since last spring.

The DL will be right with FSU and Clemson's in terms of pass rush.

We finally have a MLB!

Mario is a proven Head Coach whose teams typically improve from year 1 to year 2.

9-3/8-4

Don't expect Zion to be ready before the season starts, heard he still has a huge brace and on crutches.
Last saturday’s practice he was in full pads working w the injured guys on the side. He was not in huge brace at least not last Saturday.

Here's all I care about: did we look like a team that would win 7 or 8 games and a bowl? I just need to see a step in the right direction this year. I'm not expecting to win 10 games. By all accounts here that's about what we look like, 7-5/8-4. That's exciting to me. Diaz left the cupboard so bare talentwise that I'm just happy for any signs of the tide turning.

To me, which means as much as you want it to mean, this was a clear and substantial step forward from where we were last year.

Schematically, it was a stark difference from what we ran on both sides of the ball. Several posters are misunderstanding what an Air-Raid offense really means, probably because of watching Mike Leach offenses, but the concepts are really about stretching the field horizontally unless a vertical stretch presents itself. Normally, you’ll have pre-snap reads for vertical concept, post-snap reads for short game. The run game is generally built on simple zone runs, most often built on IZ runs, which this offense is.

Air-Raid is not just Miss State or TCU offenses. Keep it simple, play fast, play in space are the staples.

On defense, this team is going to be so much better against the run. I just love the structure and concepts of how this defense works. I was ecstatic when they hired Guidry and maybe moreso today.

I looked at who we had at G and just said I pretty much can’t even watch those clips on 2nd team. I was sure we had a FB playing RG on 2nd team. That’s something you might want to address. Expect multiple OL to find their way to other opportunities after spring. The guys we had starting at G shouldn’t see the field, so those backups…whew.

Was disappointed in Terry Roberts. I’d Say just move him to S, clear the practice reps for others, make him a ST captain and let him have a Slater career.

The rest of CB’s I thought showed good things. Not perfect, but your ask is for your CB’s to play man against fades and fight the ball every single time, you’re asking too much. They were playable, which was not really the word I’d gotten.

I liked Thomas Gore more than most, but I’m disappointed in what he put on tape. He might not even get snaps if he does that again. His motor and effort show up on game day, but he couldn’t show up at all last night because you couldn’t see him to show him.

QB. You’ve got to go find another QB. That was scary by Brown. That kid is not playable. I hear this offense is suited to his skillset, but a rhythm offense that relies on players in space is not built for him. They need accuracy at QB and I don’t see how that becomes his game. Love my guy D$ but he’s definitely higher on Brown than I am.

Skinner popped. Riley popped.

It’s a spring game, but man those practice helmets look dorky.

It looked like an 8-win team to me.

Agree about Brown; would love to see him at H-Back.

I'm anticipating more talent/depth come fall.

The tide is turning and that should be even more evident come fall camp. Very excited to see what we can do with the portal.

Did Bobby Washington play? I don’t recall seeing his number out there. Maybe I missed him? I meant Bobby, the LB. Idk how I confused the two 🤦🏾‍♀️

I was mostly impressed with the low number of wr drops and contested catches made. This was a glaring issue the last few seasons and I hope this carries into fall camp and the regular season. I see you Coach Beard!! Bon Bagay!
I see you neg lakay! Lol

In high school Francisco was a two starter QB/MLB. His Senior season he played WR/MLB. He was fast back then and his speed translated to college. Dude is a special talent.
Him and kam are special

the talent that has just arrived looks better than what we been getting for years. Thats all I need to see to know Mario will ix this eventually. People here have said it wasnt a talent issue for years thats BS, I said talent was buns for a long time. Now we finally got a guy in charge that agrees with me. We cooking bruh, just be patient cane fans

I think it’s less on the talent, but the coaching and culture that is different with this team. The last two classes are on a mission to come in and make The U great again! That’s the pitch they were given during recruiting and every day they wake up. The way these guys attack every day is awesome to see. Before guys saw us as an easy ticket to the league even if they just coasted. Now these players and coaches alike are just hungry and you can see it. But the young guys are talented, no doubt. Be honest @Dwinstitles, we have had blue chip players left and right here (top 15 in blue chip ratio and finishing out of top 25 yearly) and they were buns because no one was pushing them to greatness. Mario ain’t letting guys slack and brought the right dudes to coach them this time around. Miami has ALWAYS had talent but we went from top 15 to top 10 quickly (not a huge leap). But to me the biggest changes were culture and coaching.

Oh, one more thing to add:

The singular goal of spring is to not get anyone seriously injured. That’s all. The rest is all fluff. This is a great post and great thread, but in reality, none of this matters at all. The literal only thing that determines if you had a successful spring or not is did you have anyone get hurt?

And I don’t think anybody was injured at any point in spring that would jeopardize their fall participation. Because of that, this spring session was a massive success.
Most important post in the thread.

💯

I'm not sold on Mario, late coaches changes with no major splash etc etc. I love the Cane's but will definitely take the under sadly for another season.
