Some thoughts on the Pitt game

I don’t think anyone expected anything close to last season. Just lost too many guys. Top 20 out of what 130? That’s still the top 15%.

I’ve been hard on Mario’s coaching tenure here. He’s left a lot of meat on the bone. But I’m not delusional. I’ve been a fan for 30 years. I’ve experienced a lot of **** coaching. He’s the best we’ve had in years. Granted a low bar to climb, but he’s way past second place rn.
we went through 22 years of crap, lots of bad hires, the last guy almost sunk us
to me Mario was the perfect hire to build the program back up, do I wish he was better and more involved on Saturdays absolutely but that's not his strength, wasn't Butches either, honestly wasn't Jimmys either.

Great write-up.

I’m honestly surprised you think the committee is going to flip us and ND. I just don’t see it. Nothing has really changed from last week—ND took care of business, and so did we. I’d be shocked to see movement, even with some media pressure.

On Mario overall:

He’s absolutely stabilized the program, built a consistent culture, brought in real NFL-caliber talent, adjusted to the portal, and won big games on national TV (ND, UF last year) that helped make us relevant again.

At the same time, he’s also had some embarrassing or outright costly losses—Middle Tennessee in 2022, Syracuse and GT last year, Louisville and SMU this year. Those games likely cost us trips to the playoff, which is the ultimate goal. In that sense, he’s 0–2 so far with teams that had the talent to get in, unless we get lucky with the committee this year.

There are two things that concern me—one long-term, one short-term—and I’m curious how others see it.

Long-term Concern:

Mario’s conservative approach and philosophy of trying to “win on the margins” just isn’t who we should be. It keeps games closer than they should be—ND and FSU this year are perfect examples—and it causes losses we shouldn’t have. There’s no doubt a 10–2 Miami team that beats FSU by 21 and ND by 14+ is a playoff lock compared to wins by 3 and 6. We need to play fast and keep our foot on the throat of teams, especially rivals. I really hope he takes a hard look at this in the offseason. It’s the same reason he loses to teams we shouldn’t

Short-term Concern:

The 2025 team is built to win now, and we may have missed a real opportunity. We’ve got a dominant DL, veteran OL and QB, one of the best play makers the country in Mali, and veteran DBs in Thomas and Scott. But we’re losing a ton next year at key, hard-to-replace positions—Francis, Beck, Cooper, potentially Bell, Bain, Mesidor, Blay, K. Scott, Thomas, and both starting LBs. It’s going to be a whole new roster, and replicating what we have in the trenches right now is extremely difficult.

If there’s one thing we can count on with Mario, it’s that he’s going to bust his *** to get things right and keep stacking.

Hopefully we get a shot this year. But even if we don’t, the foundation is there, and we should be targeting the playoff and trying to make a run every single year moving forward.

I guess I don’t understand what more he was supposed to do? He averaged 281 and 4TDs over the last four games. I’m not going to gripe over a guy playing complimentary football.
280 and 2.75 TDs against three dog **** teams and one good but hardly great team. As stated in my original post that’s solid but nothing special and I was responding to the statement that Beck’s season arc ended where you had hoped it would land.

Good points. Glad you came around on the conference thing. I asked you in the offseason if you thought it was a detriment and you said not long term. We will seeing

Moving on - who is your choice for QB1 next year? Our skill players might be best in the conference

Sorsby wins the Heisman with Miami and becomes a top draft pick.

I think Mario has done a good job of establishing the foundation here and proof of concept of NEW identity over last 4 games should have TOP TIER portal talent salivating about coming here to ball with Mali and play under Hetherman.

That said, CJ Bailey is not top shelf. If we end up with him and its not a package deal with Jeremiah Smith, than we either took the lazy route or don’t have the financial backing we need to compete at the highest levels (and for the record, I 100 believe we won’t be lazy and we have the financial backing to go elite).
I think people are putting too much stock in his stinker performance against us. You gotta look at the body of work. If he hits the portal he'll be top 5 and maybe even top 3.

****.

I think about this program A LOT. Certainly more than I should/is healthy. It’s an addiction, and I’ll admit it.

So I’m insanely jealous when someone says something so obvious, yet it wasn’t anything that went through my head.

“We lost the best player in America, and we got better”.

What a line. I couldn’t agree more. We are better this year, full stop. They don’t hang banners for this, as we know. But you’re right. That shows program health. That shows growth. That shows sustainment. This is a program that’s being built to last. Now we just gotta get there and see what we can sustain. I pray somehow, some way, we get to see this group play again. I think we’d give someone **** in the playoff.

A+ line, Danny. I’m ****ed I didn’t think of it.
Agreed. Great line and it’s spot on. As Superman as Cam was last year, we all knew our Defense was Swiss cheese by mid season. So we would score a TD in amazing fashion, but I’d hold my breath knowing that we’d give up a TD just as quickly.

It’s been great not having to worry about the D this year.

And Yes - If we make it in, the teams we face will pay a price. I don’t fear any of the teams ahead of us. When we bring our A game, we can hang with any of them.

I slept like a baby last night. There will be plenty of time to stress about playoff scenarios. That can wait. I was always more worried about going 4-0. We've flopped in November since before Facebook. Four blowout wins later, and it feels like we have a real program again.

This has been a weird season. In August, anybody would've signed up for 10-2 and sweeping our rivals. I'm a pretty optimistic guy, and 10-2 was my preseason pick. It's the path that feels different. Everything looked smooth for a while. Now, we're sweating rankings instead of booking a trip to Charlotte. We still haven't gotten over the hump.

But these are good problems. Four years ago, we were in existential danger. The sport was leaving us behind. Our only draft pick was a seventh rounder. Every big game was a blowout loss. We were a joke. Now the U is everywhere- ESPN, the Draft, award shows, recruiting rankings. We're relevant for the first time in most players' lives.

Our biggest problem remains the ACC. The first issue is our own performance. We've done worse inside the conference than outside of it. Two more losses as double-digit favorites blew up our season. This needs to be the focus for self-scouting. Is it a style-of-play issue? Should we be playing higher tempo against less-talented conference foes? Mario needs to take an honest look at everything.

The second issue is the league itself. The refs, the rules, the representatives- it all screams all bush league. There may not be a single ACC team in the playoff because the tiebreaker rules are so stupid. The conference is an albatross around our necks, in recruiting and beyond.

Overall, this was a step forward. We lost the best player in America and got better. That's a sign of true program health. Here are some more thoughts on the Pitt win:

- Ahmad Moten set the tone on the first defensive play, and it was domination after that. Pitt came in averaging 38 PPG and got squashed. Justin Scott was making plays vertically and horizontally while looking every bit like a five-star player. Rueben Bain had his best game in a month. Everybody ate.

Defensive line is the most important position in college football, and the Portal has increased parity by spreading around the big boys. This is why the top of the SEC has fallen off. Mario and his staff have adapted and used a combination of blue-chip recruiting (Scott, Bain, Armondo Blount), savvy evaluation (Moten, Donta Simpson) and the Portal (Akheem Mesidor, David Blay) to build an elite front. If we can keep Moten and add a proven EDGE, this group can be lethal next year.

- The offense has continued to ascend, with added looks from Dawson and more reps for explosive young players. We're now 20th in scoring offense, 17th in yards per pass attempt, and 18th in third-down conversion percentage. The end result is within our expectations, but we dropped two critical games getting there.

- Carson Beck's arc mirrored the team itself: up and down, but ultimately where you hoped it would land. I think two things helped Beck: the evolution of the offense, and extra reps after missing spring and summer. All told, he ranks 9th nationally in passer rating and 2nd in completion percentage. When you combine stats, talent and winning (34-5 as a starter), I think he's our second-best quarterback since the Dorsey Era. Cam is the only one better, and Beck is ahead of the third guy by a good margin.

Beck is also another Portal success story. If you pick the five best Canes quarterbacks since Dorsey, it's some combination of Ward, Beck, King, Berlin and Kaaya. Four out of those five are transfers, including the best ones. I expect us to go back to that well.

- We're starting the see the vision of the Girard Pringle/Mark Fletcher backfield. Pringle fits our team perfectly because he's a North/South runner. His decisive cuts keep the offense on schedule while also threatening with 10.5 speed. And his size allows him to hide behind our giant offensive line.

A smaller back like Pringle needs help, and Fletcher is the Thunder to Pringle's Lightning. It's appropriate that Fletcher buried Pitt with a TD run that sent helmets flying. He's a huge part of our identity. Fletch is a good runner, but he's a championship-caliber football player. I like that we're using him more as a lead blocker- he brings a unique skillset with his size and physicality.

- Malachi Toney is one of the ten best football players in America. During camp, I said that I could throw a newborn baby at Toney and feel secure. Beck must feel the same way, because Toney hasn't dropped a single pass all year. I hope we keep expanding his passing role, as he's a legitimate quarterback we can trust to make decisions.

- I love that the regular season ended with a CJ Daniels highlight catch, because that's how he started it against Notre Dame. Him and Keelan Marion both brought veteran IQ and positive energy to a young room.

- It's been a rough year for the tight ends, so it's nice to see them get going. Alex Bauman had his best game of the season with 3 catches for 58 yards. Elija Lofton is still not moving and hitting at 100%, but he's finding a way to make an impact on some great calls from Dawson. This is another area where we continue to get better from the beginning of the season.

- Miami's elite pass blocking caused huge problems for Pitt's blitz-heavy attack. At times, it was target practice for Beck. And with so much scrutiny on Miami's running game, it was refreshing to see Francis Mauigoa laying on a defender like a beach towel.

- Bryce Fitzgerald's talent jumps off the screen. His ball skills (4 INTs) are Kam Kinchens-level, but he also brings the speed and fluidity of a cornerback. It will be fun to watch his career unfold.

Now we wait for the committee to do the right thing. I think they will. But if they BCS us, I hope we react like we did in 2001. And this time, our coach won't leave for the Browns. The program is being built to last. Go Canes.

Great synopsis but not sure why you think Miami is getting in. Highly unlikely

Get out of the ACC. If the administration can’t make that happen they’re worthless.

We’ve invested too much into the program to have our conference be a bush league liability.

Get into a mega conference because that’s how this whole CFP world is setup, from the inflated rankings through the “good losses!”

And don’t reach out to FSU, leave them to rot.

I give Mario credit for continuing to upgrade the coaching staff. We have two very good coordinators for the first time in what seems like forever and some excellent position coaches. Heatherman needs to be his Venables for the next 5 years.

Love you @DMoney but having a team overview write up and not mentioning Jakobe Thomas and Keionte Scott is a massive oversight. As good as Bain and Mesidor have been, those two completely changed the culture on the back end and provided big play after big play. We’ve had some good secondary play last 25 years but I think those 2 could have played on the title teams or when things were rolling. They were truly a treat to watch.

Mario fixing or allowing the offense to be fixed the last 4 games was huge. Should it have taken two losses to make the changes? **** no, however, he's not going anywhere so the best thing we can hope for is Mario to evolve which i THINK he has.

If he reverts to caveman O next year, we're fully cooked as the kids say.

So internally things are looming up, especially from a month ago. Now, we have to get the **** out of the ACC. Never forget that the league instructed or allowed the refs to blatantly **** Miami over all year but especially against SMU. They 100% stole that game, otherwise Miami would be in the playoffs.

Also, **** the committee, corrupt pieces of ****.

Just an aside… Houston lost Scott and Haulcey and won 9 games. Fritz is one **** of a coach

Sometimes it just takes the right guy. I’m friends with a ton of UGA fans. And in no way am I lumping Mario into the category of coaching acumen as Kirby.

But there’s parallels between them. UGA became a more focused and unified organization top to bottom once Kirby went to Athens. The same thing happened here. UGA spent big, both to open eye and under the table. Mario has stirred that here.
Real good comparison. Kirby energized the base as a former player, thus jacked financial commitment from the administration as well as boosters. Program became more physical - emphasis in both OL & DL - recruiting taken to a higher level & most importantly raised expectations. Still early, but Mario has us on that same track.

Beck is insanely accurate although we throw a ton of short stuff. Accuracy should be of paramount importance in the pursuit of a portal arm.
