We all kinda felt the same way about a true freshman Ken Dorsey being on deck if Kenny Kelly went down. "That's our #2 QB?" I'll never forget how bad we were going to be if Kelly went down. Now, Kaaya is no Kenny Kelly, but I do see some young Dorsey in Shirreffs.
It appears the urban legend of Evan Shirreffs may be true ... From all of these practice reports, sounds like he will be the #2 .

I'm still not sure if that's because he's a legit QB, or because the previous staff was such a failure at QB recruitment ...

A little of both. I coach HS football in GA, and can tell you that the kid is pretty good. He had some injury issues and didn't attend many, if any camps. Which explains his low ranking. IDK if he will ever get any significant playing time at Miami, but I can tell you that he's not some scrub. Now it looks like he's one play away from being the next man up. We gotta keep Kayaa upright, cause im not ready to see Sherreffs on the field.

I don't get this... The kid is doing practically everything right, and was a guy very lightly recruited, yet the previous staff failed at QB recruiting? Seems to me they hit a **** home run by bringing him in. They got Kaaya, then Shirreffs, then Allison to commit. That's not exactly failing to recruit the QB position. Previous staff had issues, LOTS of them, but identifying QB talent wasn't one of them.

He's heel-digging on Shirrefs because he thought we shouldn't have signed him.

No heel digging ... Actually admitted I don't know which scenario is accurate.

The guys on the Shirreff bandwagon seem to be the only ones with certainty of opinion.

... But I am slightly amused by Shirreff being hyped in the same way Kevin Olsen was hyped. ... At least Olsen came in with a name and some recruiting stars (for the folks who do get into that).

And what does "doing everything right" have to do with anything, ThomasM? A kid is a good recruit because he does everything right?? I thought a good recruit was a kid who we wouldn't be nervous to play. I'm not saying Shirreffs has to beat Kaaya for the 1 spot ... But I suspect a bunch of y'all are selling wolf tickets on your support of Shirreff. If he had to play meaningful snaps for us, most of y'all would just press reset on the season ... That would imply we didn't hit a "homerun" on the kid, IMO.

But maybe y'all are right ...

Richt offenses always run the ball well. The RBs got stuffed most of the time, then they gash one. Most of the yardage was against the second and third team. We were getting up field and that can leave seams in the running game so I hope that's not the case.

I'm not talking about the Dorsey that lead us to a national title, ok? I'm talking about the young guy that came in with confidence, took coaching well, and practiced well BEFORE he played a snap. I'm not comparing his game day ability to the proven Dorsey. Got it?

My main concern with Knowles/Shirreffs is that no one wanted him. It's tough to hide in South Florida/North Georgia. He might shock the world, but, generally speaking, you're not going to win NCs stealing too many recruits from FIU/Georgetown or VMI.

@Franchise

@DMoney who do you think is the best oline and do you think once sunny and d. Owens comes back they will take their starting positions back?

Sonny will battle with St. Louis. Not sure who will win. St. Louis had a rough scrimmage but he's been much improved overall in spring.

The Darrion Owens situation will be interesting. I don't see how you bench either of the freshmen with the way they're playing. I like Owens a lot but he hasn't exactly proven anything. Depth is good and those things usually sort themselves out.

I totally understand the rationale. I'm not one of those who is completely sold on Shirreffs. It's probably a little easier to hide in the sticks of North Georgia than South Florida, but, again, I get the rationale.

I do like Shirreffs' skill set though. Tall, accurate, smart, studious, and he has pretty **** good legs too.

Can the depth/talent in the DL along with the experience in S, help mask the deficiencies in the DB position? We literally only have three guys that can play there (Jackson, Elder, Redwine) and one guy that may move in the spring (Johnson).

Depends on injuries, for one thing. If Elder and Redwine stay healthy all year we have a much better shot. But there is no better way to protect green DBs than a great pass rush. Of course, it remains to be seen if the talent and coaching up front will translate into production.

S/O to Money for concise and to the point reporting. 2 things: If we had a chance for JC, then IMO it's not because CMR and or UM Admin. taking a high road and avoiding scrutiny or they confident what's coming in can get us through the season without being a liability. They know better than us the situation at CB.

Luckily Odogwu and Linder will give us some OL depth and freshness.

Just move Jaquan to CB and hope that either Finley, Colbert, Wright, James are able to play if needed.

Don't forget about Malek Young coach Rumph already said he believes he can play right away. BTW.....Young has the speed to run with fast WRs not many dbs on our roster (it's evident) have that gift.

Rumph better get him ready because he's going to have to play right away.

I hope Darrion Owens comes back like he was never injured bc i don't like the idea of having two freshmen lbs starting. One is fine but not two.

Also as far as the run game goes for one I know some of y'all are some haters bc ya got Dalvin Cooks nuts in ur mouths but we have some great rbs on the roster... Most of the reason they're gaining big yards is bc of how talented they are.

Stop lying to yourself melek would get abused against ND, FSU and NC. I don't want to take that chance. Also how are you so sure about pickney ? Has he done anything in a game ?
Man we really need JC i hope the staff goes after him our depth is scary bad at the position
I think we should wait to see what our frosh group brings to the table. I'm starting to believe the staff believes they have enough to work with..... I can also Johnson making the move to nickel coach Rumph already said he wants to work with him. If Redwine is a legit replacement like everyone is saying.....this may not turn out to be a bad situation.

It's not so much a talent issue but a depth one. Redwine may do fine opposite of Corn and having Johnson in a nickle package is great. But what if one of those guys go down? Especially if Corn misses time we have a huge problem. Mind boggling that with all the south Florida talent the last staff couldn't stock up on cb's.
I understand the depth issue...my point is we still have frosh coming in to provide depth. How good is Malek Young? Everyone raves over Byrd who is already classified as a safety at UT cuz he doesn't have the footwork right now to play corner, yet we pencled him in at starting CB opposite Corn. This type of hype happens everywhere then a kid like Pickney who everyone on all sites, forums etc...said will certainly shirt is making a strong case to start or be in the rotation. I've decided to wait until our frosh come in to make a final judgement. I'm not saying Young who ran 10.9 recently is a better athlete than Byrd who just ran a 11.66....I'm saying look very closely at the AA game and you can see Young go stride for stride with top notch receivers. All reports indicated that he was a surprise all week. Byrd was beat on that under thrown INT look at the tape. I do think he coulda been a press CB with some work, but safety is his natural position. Young isn't very tall 5'10 190 still good enough to get it done look at the draft Hargreaves, McKenzie, Jones, Fuller etc... all 5'10 ....if you have elite speed, strength and athleticism it doesn't matter if you're 6'0.....all Im saying is you never know til it all unfolds.

Sheriffs was 2-8 going against backups and know he is getting hyped up. **** is ridiculous.

There was some mention earlier about Bryson Echols being a guy we took as a transfer from Texas in addition to Colbert. Echols is a pure corner, and though I don't know if he'd play over Redwine, he'd probably be in competition for the #3 spot behind Corn/Redwine. Anyone know what's up with him?

Are you sure young would get abused? You dont know how he will perform until hets on the field.
