Recruiting Update 1-15

-Miami tight end commit Jeremy Kerr took an official visit to Florida State this past weekend. According to somebody close to him, Kerr wants to meet with his position coach, Mario Cristobal before making a final a decision. Whether Kerr just wants to get to know him on a more personal level or if he wants to discuss where he sits in the team's plans in a potentially crowded depth chart remains to be seen. It would not be a shock to see him flip to Florida State, but if the meeting with Cristobal goes smoothly, then I expect him to stick. It's very possible he makes an unofficial visit to Miami this weekend.

-If signing day was today, Keith Bryant would be a Seminole in all likelihood. The good thing for Miami's chances is that signing day isn't today and they will get the last crack at him. After Bryant told me last week that he would be visiting Miami this weekend, he has now pushed it back to February 1st, which will be the last trip he makes before signing day. Miami will need to make a strong impression on his family as well as him over the next three weeks in order to get his signature on National Signing Day.

-The other top defensive tackle prospect Miami is pursuing is Jaynard Bostwick. I've heard conflicting things in regards to whether or not he will qualify. One person I spoke to said he should be good to go, while another said he is a sign-and-place all the way. The reality of the matter with situations like this is that we will never truly know if the prospect will make it in until it's time to enroll.

-Alex Collins is arguably the most important prospect still on the board for Miami for next season's success. If I had to make a guess right now, I would say Miami will be his choice, but that isn't really based off of any information I've received. Collins was a near lock to the 'Noles until Eddie Gran left, which put them behind the 8-ball. He will be on campus this weekend and then Arkansas on the 25th.

-Watch out for RB/FB Augustus Edwards from Staten Island, New York. I exchanged messages with him earlier today and he will be visiting on February 1st. Edwards was a long-time Syracuse commitment before Doug Marrone took the Head Coach position for the Buffalo Bills. He has opened up his recruitment and told me that Miami, Rutgers, and FSU are the three schools in the mix for him. According to Edwards, Miami offered him last spring and it is his "dream school" (cue the responses to that comment). Even if Miami feels confident with Alex Collins, I wouldn't be surprised to see them take a commitment from Edwards if he wanted to pull the trigger. He is in the mold of Florida State senior Lonnie Pryor, where he can add another dimension out of the backfield from the fullback spot. A possible Najeh Davenport type threat?

-Some news yesterday that Miami fans were disappointed about was Tim Williams committing to Alabama. Although Williams has stated throughout the process that Miami was his favorite, I never wanted to pencil him in the class until he made the visit, which he obviously never took. After the commitment of Alquadin Muhammad, Williams became a luxury for the class. There will be a lot of these hybrid pass-rushers on the roster next season with Muhammad, McCord, Bond, Terry, Figueroa, and Hoilett.

-The biggest news of today that has Miami fans worrying is Matthew Thomas flip-flopping between his plans to visit Miami or USC. He was originally planning to visit USC, then flipped it to Miami, and now it is confirmed he will visit USC. It is disappointing for Miami that he couldn't make it on this big weekend, especially with his teammate Denver Kirkland, but it's not the end of the world. He will still have the opportunity to visit either unofficially or officially. Thomas has 2 officials remaining not including the USC one, so one will go to FSU and as of right now he's scheduled to see UGA on the last weekend, but it's not out of the question for him to visit Miami that weekend instead. Either way, today's news is not a blow to Miami's chances and I still expect him to visit before Signing Day.

I can even live with Bostwick going to prep for a year, since realistically very few Frosh DTs are going to be making a significant impact in year one.

The two guys Im the most worried about are Thomas, Collins and DT. The USC thing really bothers me about Thomas. I dont like the vibe it gives, not for a hometown kid who is supposedly so enamoured with the U. The Collins situation has also bothered me for a while too. When a kid decommits like that, it almost never works out for us in the end. The fact that this kid has been searching high and low for other programs, despite the fact that this is the perfect place for him, just leads me to believe there is something pushing him elsewhere.

So as of now, Im going to approach things as I always do. Expect the worse, and hope for the best, Im going to expect Thomas and Collins are going to ***** us, and mentally prepare myself for that now. I would recommend most of you do that too. Thus, if it does happen, the board doesnt go into meltdown mode, where people are trashing Golden and the staff, and disparaging the kids we DID get, and the commitments THEY made to our program, because we lost out on some guys we wanted. And if we manage to pull them, well then it will be a pleasant surprise, like finding the keys to a new Corvette under the Xmas tree you werent expecting.

This stuff happens every year. Even if we lose out on these kids, Golden and staff have done a **** of a job considering the sh*t show we have been dealing with here. When we start winning again, and have this NCAA cloud finally gone from over our heads, we are going to start winning these big battles for the super studs again. Its impressive enough that we have landed the ones we have.

Just a few days ago many on this Board predicted a sweep of the remaining targets on our Big Board. These young pups are too naive and effusively enthusiastic to realistically assess our chances. But, history tells us otherwise. Al and his staff are recruiting in an extremely challenging environment. We've already lost Williams and are in a fight for the others. We will get our share but I expect to lose at least one and perhaps two of the South Florida kids. To believe otherwise is foolish.

I'll continue to believe we are gonna get these guys until we don't.

And if we don't, I won't freak out because I understand how this thing works.

No offense but 1/2 the people on the board are just like fsu fans. You think we're getting everyone. I said it before think you get everyone and your in for major disappointment. I want them all but it's not realistic. If we get them that great..... If not my disappointment is mitigated.

FSU fans are under the impression that they're getting everyone fromSouth Florida, including kids from BTW. It's like UM fans predicting they're going to get the top prospects from Lincoln HS in Tally. It's absurd and nothing alike.

I'd be cool with bots, Collins, Kirkland, and grace.

If we can get coley and 6... That's be awesome, but we're pretty loaded with young unproven talent at both spots as is.

I agree with those that say we should be realistic but let me pick this place at the bottom page 4 of the replies where most have grown weary and moved to other post to throw out something to look for. Bryant was to visit this weekend but delayed his visit to his last weekend. Like Bryant Thomas cancelled and is going to USC a non candidate this weekend. I believe he goes to FSU or Bama next weekend and GA. for his last visit. Here's what we need to watch for. If Thomas cancels his last visit to Ga. a non candidate and then takes his Miami official then I smell a rat and his name is Al Golden and both Bryant and Thomas announce for us on NSD. Just a theory but what the heck.

We'll get Collins, Thomas, Kirkland, Grace, Bryant and Bostwick (if qualifies). We will lose Coley and Robnson. Me personally, I would be good with that and if had to pick two recruits to miss on; it would be these two. I hope I'm wrong and we get a clean sweep, but I don't think so.

I would take Coley over Bryant at this point.

I would but Keef's position is needed more so than wr. we have plenty of depth.

MT6 has already got a school in mind.. and... it ain't Miami.

why waste a perfectly good trip to Cali over a school he isn't going to end up at. For him to miss the 18th after him being a top target and 18th being the most important day.. if we can't get him to come on the 18th .. a signature on NSD isn't even close

lol...why waste a good vacation on USCs dime when he come back and visit Miami any time he wants. He wasn't planning on going but the ticket was bought and he was told to stick to his original plan at the last minute. NBD honestly bc if hes gonna come to miami **** come and he doesnt need to come the 18th to figure that out. its a different story if he never visits before NSD but he does have a couple weeks to visit and it doesnt have to be an OV

I would take Coley over Bryant at this point.

Same here. While its obvious that DT is a must needed position to fill, Coleys ceiling is huge. Taking a game changing playmaker is almost always a must, especially when Coley could potentially change games next season. Dont want to miss out on a playmaker that we could look back and say "what if" to, much like Amari this past season
