Preston Dewey SPOTLIGHT

Things are a little bit slow right now right on the recruiting front due to the Christmas break, so I think it would be a great time to look at a player we have committed and talk about what we are getting. Now you might think Duke Johnson would be the first player I want to talk about but no it's QB Preston Dewey.

I really like Dewey, he is different then a lot of our recruits. He doesn't come from any national rated high school. A matter of fact according to MaxPreps his high school is 10,690th in the country. This means 2 things; his high school isn't very good at football and we have a lot of high schools in this country, but hey Ty Detmer is his coach and most Canes fans can't forget the religious curse of 1990, so I would considered him well coached.

At 6'3' 205 he is a little taller than Stephen Morris but also weighs a little less. He has a good arm and is an accurate passer. I can't wait to see him at the Under Armour All-America game on Thursday, January 5th in St Petersburg, Florida. The great thing about quarterbacks is they are a bit more of a mystery than most of your other players. The book has yet to be written on Presten Dewey at Miami but with each quarterback we bring in we are closer to getting the one that will return the U back to Quarterback U.

Yeah, me too. I see him as a credible prospect but certainly not a can't miss. I wouldn't be surprised if he's solid in a could years. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a career back-up. I would be surprised if he's an immediate starter or high draft pick type talent.

Exactly, who thought Ken Dorsey would be an All-American coming out of HS. Not many, that's for sure. Intangibles and intelligence seem to matter a lot more for QB's than other positions, and at the college level a smart QB can make a huge impact even without a cannon arm if knows how to read defenses, ie Kellen Moore.

Only if we are strong in other areas.

Intangibles and intelligence seem to matter a lot more for QB's than other positions, and at the college level a smart QB can make a huge impact even without a cannon arm if knows how to read defenses, ie Kellen Moore.

Not to be a **** but actually a lot of college all-american quarterbacks have very high ratings from recruiting sites (like scout). Kellen Moore was a 4-star.

If we we running the spread or his old offense was running a pro style passing game, I might be concerned. Scheme fit is as important and talent. Think John Brantley in reverse.

Wasn't Ken Dorsey a 4 star recruit? That being said Brock Berlin, Kyle Wright, Kirby Freeman, Jacory Harris, Robert Marve were all highly recruited. Some turn out well, but I still think it is different from other positions like RB for instance. Maybe because teams recruit less QB than other positions makes it feel more like luck. Also I think the way Quarterbacks seemed to be rated is a little off. When you are the QB of the best HS team in the country it should be easy to complete passes. I am not saying stars don't matter when it comes to QB but because the success of a QB is so much dependent on the success of other skilled players I think it makes it harder to judge.

Dewey Impressed By Duke & Angelo

Sunday's practice was the first time Dewey had thrown the football in full pads since breaking his left wrist more than three months ago.
For those reasons, Dewey finished the first Under Armour practice of the week stronger than he started it

One of the receivers on Dewey's team this week is fellow UM commit Angelo Jean-Louis.
It didn't take long for Dewey to be impressed by the ability of his future teammate.
"Playing with athletes like this is getting me excited for Miami," Dewey said. "I can just put it out there and they can go catch it.
Like with Angelo on one play I just put it up for him to go get and he just jumped over a guy to grab it.
That was a lot of fun to see. He is out here wowing everybody."
"I think he will be a big time player at Miami. He can be incredible. Once he gets in the weight room and works hard and is
developed, he can be as good as he wants to be. The sky is the limit for a guy like that."
Dewey and Jean-Louis are also on the same team as running back commit Duke Johnson, who also impressed during today's practice.

"Duke is just phenomenal to watch," Dewey said. "He busted out a couple of long runs today. He is going to be incredible at Miami.
I don't think I have ever seen anybody with a burst like him. He can go start to stop in a couple yards and in the blink of an eye.
It is elite stuff with what he can do when he gets the ball." When Dewey took an uofficial visit to Miami in early November he
made it a point to watch Duke Johnson play. To watch Johnson's game though Dewey had to drive three hours from Miami
to Key West to watch Norland play the Conchs and the trip did not disappoint.
"I heard they were playing and I just really wanted to see him play and wow is he a great player," Dewey said.
"It was kind of a drive to go see him, but it was definitely worth it. They had the game won and took Duke out, but I got to the
game late and they put him back in and he busted a 30-yard run.
Then I saw Ereck Flowers pick a couple of guys up and throw them around, so it was cool to see those guys."

Dewey is enrolling early at Miami this spring and he is using this week of Under Armour practices to help make the transition to UM smoother.
"It will be good to get bigger and stronger this spring and battle for the starting spot," Dewey said. "I don't know if I will get the job,
but I will at least push the guys around me to get better. It is a great opportunity for me and all the quarterbacks.
I do know whoever does win the job, we will have a good team next year no matter what."
