Peter Ariz discusses standouts from Tuesday's practice

I’m traveling this week, but Peter Ariz is holding it down at Greentree. He provided his thoughts from Tuesday’s practice on the CanesInSight Daily Podcast:

On TE Riley Williams: I noticed this at Pro Day. Will Mallory was out at Pro Day standing next to Riley Williams. Mallory is an NFL tight end. Williams was not dwarfing him, but he looked huge standing next to Mallory. You can just tell this is not your normal sophomore tight end. He had a nice deep ball reception in 7-on-7 work. I think he's a guy who can really stretch the field from that tight end spot, just like Elijah Arroyo can. I’m expecting a big, big jump from Riley Williams this season.

On LB Cameron “Bobby” Pruitt: This is a guy DMoney's been talking about a ton early on. He’s been running a lot with the ones and had a really nice rep in coverage against Chris Johnson. This wasn't a five-yard out or slant. This was a downfield pass in one-on-ones. Really nicely defended by Pruitt, got one hand on it and kind of tipped it to himself for an interception.

A linebacker could get exposed against a smaller, speedy back with a downfield pass like that. Really good job by him in coverage.

On DB coach Chevis Jackson: You can just see that intensity popping from him in practice. You can see him really getting into it with the guys. There’s only so much you can see, but he’s bringing the intensity 100 percent.

On CB Jadais Richard: He stood out to me. We’ve said it time and time again on the CanesInSight podcast that he has NFL interest because of his size and speed. Flashed last year, especially in the Florida State game. He has the length to match up with tight ends and had a nice play in coverage on Elijah Arroyo in 7-on-7 work.

On LB Adarius Hayes: He really stood out, physically, at the linebacker spot. I told a couple of people out there he looked like Thurston Armbrister in that #34 with his sheer size and length. You're talking about a guy who's legitimately 6’3.5, long arms and had a really nice hit on Chris Wheatley-Humphrey coming downhill in the hole. Kind of got things going early in the practice session. Adarius Hayes is really towering over some of the guys in the LB room.

On WR Ray Ray Joseph: He looks sturdy. He’s put on some good weight. Coming in as a freshman, there were huge expectations for him with his speed and his playmaking ability. But people need to realize that one, he hadn't been a pure receiver. He played a lot of running back in his career. And two, he just needed to put on some of that good weight.

We've talked a ton about Ny Carr and JoJo Trader, but do not forget about Ray Ray Joseph. He's a guy you can get the ball in a multitude of ways. He can hopefully be what Brashard Smith was at times for Miami last season.

First time I saw Riley Williams on the field I had to make sure it was him. Forget what the rosters and recruiting services say at times he is a monster

We’ve heard all the jokes from last year so no need to rehash, but you’d have to be an absolute buffoon to not makes these tight ends a massive part of the offense this year.

IMO a 100.0% healthy Arroyo is the best TE in the league. Yes, I know he’s done nothing to prove that. I don’t care. Bryson Nesbitt was first-team all-ACC last year. Arroyo is bigger, faster, and stronger. Jaheim Bell the midget who is probably a 5th-6th round pick was 2nd team. If dude is completely healthy, I’m taking him over any other TE in the league.

Then you throw Riley Williams in there. Dude looks like Mo Alie-Cox with wheels. Runs like a gazelle and is a building. Massive recruit.

Elijah Lofton is being praised as the 2nd coming of Christ. No chance he stands on the sidelines all year.

Dawson MUST find ways to get these kids matched up on backers and safeties in single coverage all season. Ward’s legs are going to have everyone’s attention in the middle of the field. It’s imperative we get these kids involved heavily from the jump. There is far too much talent here to ignore the position.

Gaby reported similar, but I am also hearing that Lofton was unbelievable yesterday.

Embarrassment of riches at that spot (and yes I know they're not going to use Lofton as a traditional TE entirely).....ZERO excuse to not get massive production from those kids. I want to watch linebackers chase Arroyo, Williams, and Lofton all over the field for 70 plays and see how it goes in the 4th quarter.

It's probably been said, but I missed it if it was... do we know how much of the lack of TE use last year was due to Dawson not having plays for the the TEs vs not calling them b/c of lack of a healthy receiving TEs and/or the QBs weren't going to them if he did call plays to the TE?

I am assuming that it likely was a combination of the 3.

given that the thread was started by DMoney based on Ariz's observation, i object on the basis of hearsay. And none of the 23 exceptions (Graham) apply.

Like the RayRay update. Some had him in the portal with the talk of Trader & Carr performing at high levels.

Go Canes!

Need a couple of them to play on the basketball team...

With the type of athletes/players we have at TE combined with the returning production of X and George and young talented kids like Ray Ray, Robbie W, Isaiah Horton, Shemar Kirk, Jojo Trader, Ny Carr and Chance Robinson all battling for the right to get on the field, this team will have more than it's share of weapons in the passing game and I didn't even mention the RBs. Add to that the Offensive Line we have then finally Cam Ward at QB and it doesn't take a genius to realize that this offense has the potential to routinely light up the scoreboard and maybe even break a few UM offensive records.

I’ve done previous breakdowns, Dawson has never been a big believer in using TEs as primary options. But yes, it’s multiple factors.

1) Dawson believing TEs should have a minimal role in offense, mostly used as a check down/safety net.

2) starting QB who was allergic to check downs

3) Mario/Mirabal firmly believing TEs shouldn’t play unless they can do their #1 job (block)

4) TE room was in shambles
- Riley was a true freshman who hadn’t grown in body (#3)
- Skinner was a sophomore who isn’t ever going to be viable “hand in the dirt” TE (#3)
- Arroyo couldn’t stay healthy, and when he did get minimal snaps he couldn’t get a look (#2)

This is how you get Cam McCormick playing 85% of the TE snaps

We can all sit here and ***** “why isn’t he using the TEs” without realizing Miami’s top 3 WRs were the most productive in school history.
****, Restrepo broke the single season reception record with below average QB play.

2022 was one of the worst canes offenses I’ve seen in the past decade and we had the best TE in ACC. Yards are yards, points are points.

Can’t even tell you who was playing TE for Dawson when Geno was breaking records, but we all know who Stedman Bailey, Tavon Austin & Kevin White were.

Just listen to Dawson talk about the TEs for the last like year or so

He absolutely wants to utilize them. Not absolving him but at some point TVD couldn’t even throw a screen pass and our health was rough at the spot

Cam gonna have these dudes eating this year
