I'm a little nervous about Van Dyke. He patted the ball over and over. He's unsure of himself and he started forcing balls. I had Berlin 2003 flashbacks a few times. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a 3-4 interception game against A&M. I hope I'm wrong.

One problem with our pass rushers is that they aren't very flexible finishers. Guys like Agude have the twitch to get pressures but they can't break down and change directions to finish with a sack.

Mesidor and Taylor are the two exceptions. We need those guys to eat on Saturday.
We messed up not taking that JSU kid. And we’re too late on the Albany kid who landed at FSU (hate to admit it). Probably time to release Kelly, also Thomas Davis has great bend but needs to hold an edge better

- There will be plenty of threads and posts about our CBs. Almost everyone got punched in the mouth today. Clearly, teams are picking on players.

- Was a pleasure to see a defense with both Wesley and Chase lined up next to each other. Watching Chase anticipate a route and beat the opponent to his spot should stand out on film. Watching Wesley get to spots on the field other players just cannot was fun.

- So far, we've not blitzed as much as I expected we might. I can only guess we will next week? We haven't created enough pressure with our Edge rushers so far.

While talking about his QB, I think Southern Miss' coach's comments on our defensive looks match up with what we saw and I mentioned in the OP:

We seemed to trot out a simplified version of what I expect us to do going forward...starting this week. Maybe we won't go wild with "new" coverages, but I expect different blitz packages and more disguise (especially with James Williams).

I'd expect the opposite, but who knows. I'm actually thankful he had a few extremely late looks and throws (man, that called-back INT will pop out at him on film). I expect them to clean that **** up immediately. Whatever we paid Southern Miss for their travel, we should give them an 18% tip for accelerating TVD's development this season.

Out of curiosity, I looked up the game summary from the 2001 home game vs Troy State, at the Orange Bowl.

12noon kickoff
Attendance 36K

Miami sleepwalked, was tied at 7 end of first quarter.
Led 17-7 at the half.
Scored 21 in the 3rd quarter, including a pick 6 by Ed Reed.
Won 38-7.

Not much different than this past Saturday, except Miami isnt #1 ranked.

Is this typically what you see from P5 teams early vs “cupcakes”?

Only thing I'd mention re: cupcake teams is the yards/play and conversion % numbers don't typically get a ton better than against those teams. On Saturday, we averaged closer to 5.5 yards/play, which is about 60th in the country. It can definitely change. I imagine it will via throwing the ball downfield more. But, yeah. We need to get more pop.

Feel free to chime in on the specific parts.

Most of the points within the OP have been validated by Cristobal or a specific player (like TVD) himself.

It wasn't our best effort, but doesn't mean it's how we'll look going forward. It happens.
I read that as most of this thread was an overreaction.
I'm going with that.

Having Mesidor back will help immensely. If he can get going it will require them to double team him with OL, loosening things up for the interior DL, or they'll have to commit the RB to helping the OL block him, reducing the RBs availability as a safety valve for the QB to dump off passes.

I still believe this team is currently identifying who they are with only two WINS on the books. No doubt there is a lot to correct but and still adapt to new coaching along with ridding of some bad habits from last staff. That being said I believe we have enough talent to compete for the acc title this year if we become a more complete unit and play to our strengths. This week's game will help sort things out. It has to happen

We are going to keep improving with coaching and recruiting, but the OL is still weak, as I said x1000 in the offseason. It's not going to change like magic. Most of our OLs have never been good at this level.

Man… there’s just too many “maybe next week” … I’m not panicking because I know it’s a process but it is slightly concerning. I’ve thought our current players do not match well with the gattis. Not saying gattis offense sucks but we don’t have the horses on the boundary to make this work at the moment.

We play press almost every snap.
Some of our guys simply aren't that good.

Our scheme is basically predicated on locking up the outside WR's and playing zone versus the inside guys.

The CB's are man-to-man on the outside WR's unless they run under/immediately inside. This is called 'MOD' technique. (Man On Deep) It's a Saban staple.

You need long, physical, sound CB's for this scheme.
I feel like there were numerous plays the first 2 games where Ivey gave his man space and they cut underneath on a quick slant for 8,9 yards... You see him playing press more often than not?

Basically said TVD put the ball on the hash as designed and Mallory needed to try harder to catch up to the pass.
It actually looked like TVD should have placed that ball more to the inside and softer, and seemed like he rushed it.

I don’t think our staff cares that this offense is boring to watch, it’s meant to be. On good days it will wear down the D and then we’ll get the fun plays. But their primary goal is to grind down the other team physically. If there’s going to be any flash this year it’ll be us running our regular *** plays and the other team f*cking up.

As long as we win, I can live with that but it won’t be pretty.
Can’t win like that in today’s CFB. Even Old head Saban realized that years ago

I think we should not play the blame game of Mallory, TVD, etc. Their game was off.

Who we should blame are the entire O that came out flat and sleep walked through most of the 1 st half.

When I hear we were saving our plays for TAMU it is interesting because we had to execute the plan based on the current opponent. TAMU's plan is different so we failed for 30 minutes on the conceived plan for an opponent we should have crushed.

Did we sharpen our game for TAMU?........not really. Did we show some flashes?...yes. Were the calls by Gattis pedestrian?...yes.
Were we looking ahead to the BIG game?.....maybe.....Are we saving our secret plans for TAMU?.........maybe

This game could be the motivator to indicate that we are NOT where we think we should be, and we do not have a team ready to come out and kick *** from the opening whistle.
It did show that with adjustments we can make the changes necessary to win.

Now the TAMU task is for Gattis and Mario to make changes during the game that plays to our advantage, and presents a plan that will confuse and throw off what TAMU prepared.

We have the will to win, the execution and play calling must show up at the game immediately........not in the second half, or we lose.

Fans want an air attack, if TVD is on we should have a **** of a show...............just tell the WR's to catch the **** ball.

“Next week” is finally here.

“This week” will answer most (if not all) of our questions and test our theories. Are we holding back formations? Will the offense finally open things up? Did TVD just have one of those games or will the indecisiveness and uncomfortableness with the offense continue? Which OL are we more likely to see for the balance of the season - the one that dominated Bethune Cookman or the one that looked utterly confused (at times) against Souther Miss?

Will the D stay in base or become more aggressive? Will the ends finally contain the edge while creating pressure or will QBs continue to work with mostly clean pockets and easily escape around the end for chunk yardage when needed? Will the D get off the field on third downs or are we destined for heartbreak every series?

The pre-season is over. Time to play with what we’ve got.

Can’t wait.
