Observations from this week vs Southern Miss

Ok, haven't re-watched, but I take notes during the game. I'll unload them here:

TVD.
Most have mentioned it wasn't TVD's best game. He was 21/30 for 263 yards, but frankly, what stood out to me was how late his trigger was on a handful of throws. Supposedly, he mentioned he's going to go throw tonight. He'd know better, but it didn't necessarily seem like his mechanics were at issue. He's not moving his feet in the pocket as well I hoped, but what it seemed like was a massive anticipation/timing issue. Even with a clean pocket, he held the ball a tick or two longer than necessary. The two plays that stand out are (1) the INT that got called back for offsides and (2) the incomplete pass to Key Smith on our sideline. The called-back INT was a poor/late toss. The incomplete pass looked like TVD may have seen a ghost.

- The WRs who were said to be dropping passes in camp haven't dropped a pass (unless I missed one?). But, TVD looked like he struggled to get his timing and rhythm down. This was talked about all offseason. *It is a different type of passing offense.* My biggest fear is that, sure, while it may help TVD's development for the NFL, he wouldn't be playing in a wide open system with a ton of RPOs to help him make quick, predetermined decisions. Let's see what we do next week. Would really love to see more RPOs for TVD's rhythm.

- The RBs are in a **** of a spot on our team. I counted over 15 carries for Parrish where he had to bounce or cut. Overall, he and Thad combined for 35 carries and approximately 4.5 a pop. They grind out yards.

- If this offense is going to look like what it has so far (and I have to suspect it changes some), we cannot win important games unless our RBs pop longer runs. Unfortunately. It probably shouldn't have to be that way, but we ran 81 plays at a 5.5 yards/play clip. Last week's 9 yards/play is irrelevant, IMO. It will not be sufficiently explosive. I can only guess we will make the necessary changes to resolve what we've seen so far. Maybe my guess is just hope. Is Gattis holding stuff back? I doubt many really know. We'll see.

- I don't think we can be "successful" if we run our pass offense through our slot (Restrepo and Smith). I'm sure there are more vertical routes there to be seen, but there just won't be enough pop to the offense. Our longest pass play of the day was to Key Smith, but it was a flea flicker.

- I believe Arroyo has been underutilized so far. The vertical routes Mallory has gotten should go to Arroyo, IMO. On an incomplete pass to Mallory up the seam, I actually think TVD anticipated it decently well and threw tighter to the hash. I'd have to re-watch, but from the endzone view, that looked like it was on Mallory not tightening up his route.

- I'd love to see more of Brinson, Key Smith, and a returning George.

- There will be plenty of threads and posts about our CBs. Almost everyone got punched in the mouth today. Clearly, teams are picking on players.

- Was a pleasure to see a defense with both Wesley and Chase lined up next to each other. Watching Chase anticipate a route and beat the opponent to his spot should stand out on film. Watching Wesley get to spots on the field other players just cannot was fun.

- If I were our opponents, I'd continue to scheme for clearouts for my QB to run wild.

- So far, we've not blitzed as much as I expected we might. I can only guess we will next week? We haven't created enough pressure with our Edge rushers so far.

Let's see how we adjust a number of things going into a monster game next week.

Credit to the announcers for seeing that too. Looked like TVD threw it where it needed to be but Mallory ran a sloppy route.
I watch from the WEZ, so the play was coming my way. What did the announcers say? I was wondering if Mallory got redirected on the snap and Mallory just didn't tighten it back up toward the hash?

Outside of LTs 2 plays, Dline was underwhelming. Great run defense tho. SM had a big oline, but tf in first career snaps looked really good. In some ways better than tvd.

Worried the warnings about Mario ruining qbs among other things as a corch may be true.

Basically said TVD put the ball on the hash as designed and Mallory needed to try harder to catch up to the pass.
Yeah that one looked like a good throw by TVD. Could have been a big play given Mallory’s YAC potential

Disappointing game from Mallory today bigtime

Players who need to see less PT, DJ Ivey....cut the ***ry @DMoney, hyping up first round management man. And Will Mallory, same dude. Let Arroyo, Mamarelli and Skinner get the snaps. Boy still can't block a CB.
I think it's time all these guys see more PT:

- Arroyo, as noted.
- Porter: sure, he got Moss'd. It happens. He was there and turned around. On a pass play some time before, he was sticky.
- Wesley and Chase. More and more snaps as the season goes on. Neither Steed nor Flagg did anything wrong necessarily. It's just a matter of what these younger kids are capable of doing.
- Gotta try something at Edge. Not sure if Kelly is ready, but something has to give. We need more upfield pressure.
- If AWilliams is really quitting the team, I'd like to see more of Balom some time soon.

I HATE stubborn coaches, praying Gattis isn't one. IDGAF what your playbook is, go back and find the top 5-8 passing plays from Lash last year that worked well for TVD and then COPY + PASTE. It's not complicated.

Example - why is there no RPO crossing slant play? It worked ALL last year. Throw it it 3-5 times per game. ETC.

Where was GB3? Also has Agude played I don’t remember him making a single play so far this season 👀? I didn’t see Ladson today…and I would love for us to find more ways to get Breshard Smith on the field even as the outside receiver

100%. We are going to need 20+ yard plays from the TEs in this offense.

Spot on. My biggest concern for tvd was his overall pocket presence, he bailed on a bunch of clean pockets last year. This offense will test his NFL readiness

this thread is clear example of why coaches are coaches and fans are fans. Just Yikes. I love where we are for week 2 . TVD played average FOR HIM and he was still a top 5 QB in college FB , he is that good. Our RB are much better then I expected and they are probably the best group in our league 1-4 . Mallory does need to step it up. So much talent but so up and down. And I can't disagree Ivey shouldn't be starting but it can't be Porter as that kid is awful every time I see him play. Love our defensive back field every where else . We have 5 guys at CB and S who i think will be 1st or 2nd round picks one day. Ivey is not one of them LOL . But beyond that we all know it was vanilla for a reason and I expect TVD to let it rip next week. Our D is farther along then I thought at this point as it has been soooooooooo average for 5-6 years and u can't turn it around that fast but we are light years better. Just get better week by week . We are as we have great coaches now . FINALLY.
The weird thing is it was a "yikes" thread but you're not really disagreeing with anything. TVD didn't play well, and I mentioned what looked like the issue was (timing/anticaption). Would you disagree? I didn't advocate for Porter over Ivey necessarily. Intentionally, I actually didn't even mention Ivey. You've seen a lot of Porter? He's barely played. He did get Moss'd on a play today, as I mentioned.

As an aside, you see 5 guys at CB and S *currently playing* who will be 1st or 2nd round picks one day? Who are they?

Don’t care that we played two cupcakes. A ton of red flags exist. And spare me with the “the playbook is vanilla and not opened yet” bull****.

-TVD has regressed
-DBs outside of 24 are buns. What was Stevenson doing?
-defensive alignment pre snap is trash
-Gattis won’t last long here with this midwestern type offense
