Next steps after RB Henry Parrish's departure

Henry Parrish, Miami’s leading rusher the past few seasons, has entered the Portal. In 2022, Parrish made third-team All ACC with 617 yards, 4.7 yards per carry and 4 TDs. Behind an improved OL in 2023, his efficiency jumped up to 6.3 yards per carry while improving his yardage (625 yards) and TDS (6). I spoke on Parrish and Miami’s next steps on the CanesInSight Daily Podcast.

On Parrish’s next destination: My strong suspicion is that he's going to be transferring right back to where he transferred from, the Ole Miss Rebels. Kevin Smith, the coach that recruited him to Ole Miss, came to Miami, brought him here. Kevin Smith's back at Ole Miss. I suspect he will take Henry Parrish back there. Was there tampering involved? I don't know. Let people fill in the blanks on that one.

On Parrish the player: Tough loss, in my opinion, for the Canes. This is somebody who wasn't the most spectacular player, but I think he was underrated. Led the ACC in yards per carry (min. rushes - 100) with 6.3 yards. So he was very efficient as a runner. Now, that 6.3 yards per carry didn't involve 60 yard touchdowns and game-breaking plays. Just a lot of eight, 10 yard runs and and very few losses because he was so slippery. Was he a franchise back? Was he Clinton Portis or anything like that? No, but he's a very useful back. That's why Ole Miss, which is a top 10 team, is taking him back happily.

On Miami’s next steps: This is not unexpected for the Canes. You heard me on the podcast yesterday saying Miami is going to be aggressive in pursuing help in the portal or running back. Didn't want to let the cat out of the bag with this one just in case Parrish changed his mind, but most people knew he was out. Miami is going to aggressively pursue a running back in the portal. I expect them to aim high and look for an impact-type player.

Miami wanted Parrish back, but they see the same thing as everybody else. We need to get to a certain standard at running back that is elite. Parrish is a good player. Anyone would have loved to have him. Ole Miss is lucky to have him. But the hope is we can get to that elite standard at running back to match what we have on the offensive line. I expect Miami to aim high at the running back position, just like they aimed high at the quarterback position.

Thanks for the update; this is great news.

Yeah, losing your leading rusher and literal conference YPC leader most certainly is never great news. Like, ever.

HOWEVER….reading between the lines here, off of what D has been saying, Mario said today, and some of the national guys are saying, IMO Miami has a great shot at landing someone potentially even better than Parrish when all the dust settles. Still isn’t great news to lose this kid when your entire room is either hurt or unproven, and this kid is neither (at the moment — I’d be remiss to not mention he has a rather lengthy injury report himself). But it’s much more manageable news were Miami to land one of these “big fish” from the portal that a lot of people seem to be alluding to.

That has to happen, and no, it can’t be a kid from UAB. But, again just trying to put the puzzle together here, I have a sneaking suspicion Miami feels really good about a big time back who will open a lot of eyes if/when he hits the portal. And Parrish knows it too, that’s why he bounced.

We’ll see.

Yup.

Like I said, it's great news.

We were never gonna rock with 10 RB, the room was gonna have to clear out, I BEEN saying that.. Didnt know the local guy who portaled in was gonna be the guy but it happens.. AND was expected so yea.. already know what train Im on.. so I aint sweating it..

If Fletcher and Citizen’s health weren’t such a question mark this honestly wouldn’t bother me that much. As we’ve seen the last couple of seasons you can never have enough running backs. If we knock it out of the park and get an elite back to replace him though I’m all for it. Anyone have any ideas on who the staff might look at to replace him?

There has to be something high before we can aim at it.. Are we just hoping or actively tampering?

And by tampering, I mean, legally, kicking tires. 🤫

I’m super curious who our “Aim High” type targets might be. Traveon? Jadyn Ott? Tahj Brooks? Ollie Gordon?!?!?

Does this mean a Judkins caliber or Allen/Parrish caliber.

Ott is desperate to get out unless cal fixes nil. They had some severe issues in house last year between coaches & it came back to Marshawn pulling back quite a bit.

Rasheen Ali - is in the draft
TreVeyon Henderson - decided not go go pro and come back to Ohio St after Judkins transferred in. He's not going anywhere
Jaydn Ott - Trolled transferring right before Cal's bowl game. Doesn't look like he's going anywhere

Getting an "impact" RB kind of depends on how you define "impact". I mean - Ajay Allen made an impact for us last year.

I'm sure some good RB's will enter the portal after Spring, but I'm skeptical of us getting more than a rotation RB. I just don't think many will be available.

Ott could easily change his mind now and enter the portal. We’ve seen kids nowadays change their minds all the time. I would not be surprised if he enters after Cal does not meet his NIL needs…
