Miami vs Florida Review: Canes Physicality Overwhelm the Gators

The Miami hurricanes had to grind out a physical win vs Florida, the constant heavy rain didn't do either teams favors in the passing game. Our offensive line and defensive line were the deciding factors in the contest as UF could not match our play in the trenches which lead to the Canes pulling away as the body blows took their toll.

Check out some of the plays included in the film review in the Youtube link above.

UF comes out in a tight pistol set. This INVITES pressure from the corner positions as they are only few yards outside of the tackle box.

A big time athlete in Xavier Lucas able to showcase those abilities by crashing down in the running game from the backside. EXCELLENT technique from Bain here 1 v 1 with a TE (Billy is really drawing this up) engaging with his inside arm and keeping his outside leverage free to help finish the ball carrier.

Bain has been the most DOMINANT player in the country regardless of position. Gators come out in trips right trying to get the numbers advantage. He will not get a stat for this play... However it is his power to take on this double team that force the ball back inside to his teammates Moten and Wes.

While Bain has rightfully so garnered national attention it's the entire unit that is impressing with Mesidor providing constant pressure. The interior pressure from Mesidor flushes Lagway out of the pocket away from a potential completion despite being held...

The crazy potential of Lightfoot's potential was on full display here after engaging with the TE and LT he is then able to chase down Lagway in the open field. This type of skillset and motor is exactly what made him a 5 star recruit and one of the best prospects in the nation.

Love the 2 by 2 formation tight to the boundary. This fake jet motion from Mali takes the S from the middle of the field and to the opposite has respecting the motion. These little wrinkles add up when you successfully manipulate defenses.

Awesome job with Mali flowing left and McCoy pulling and Bauman coming back across the formation helping seal the edge Fletcher.

Mali and CJ double stack with a switch release. Daniels is trying a double move on the out and up which will take S attention vs 2 Man under defense. Beck sees this and waits simply for Mali to create his separation from his defender.

Mali sets up the defenders leverage and once he opens up is when Mali snaps back down and does a great job getting negative back to the football creating 5 yards of separation.

We have run this sort of Wing-T look all year. We have seen Fletcher score multiple TD's including one later in this game and even Brown on the receiving end of a TD reception but however the new wrinkle was the handoff to the left side to Brown for the 1st time.

The Canes come out here in a 2 by 2 tight set with Lofton clearing out leaving CJ 1 v 1 with the LB Which he takes full advantage of on 3rd down Making him FALL with his whip route.

CJ was able to create this separation and get the first down. However, this LB getting beat on the whip route led to Coach Dawson isolating him again and winning with this very route on the next 3rd down.

This time matched up 1 v 1 vs TE we have Marion Inside release simulating a pick route by rubbing off the LB however once Lofton gets him to commit to the outside he breaks back to the inside and fights through the contact to break open. A better ball here from beck even though it was storming could of lead to a YAC opportunity.

Here in our 12 set our 2 WR's are bottled up and by the time Beck looks to check it down, Fletcher's good technique bites us. As he rightfully so chips the edge as he releases to the flat this actually moves the defender inside and disengages him from Francis allowing the sack.

Trips left here for beck who gets some pressure from a delayed blitz and gets past the Center pushing beck up the pocket.

1758510673125.png

1758510795559.png

With beck 1st read being Mali he was late to the window for CJ daniels as while he had to step up into the pocket it allowed Mcclain enough time to undercut the football. With the ball being completely soaked in these conditions it is extremely heavy and that slows this down enough for the INT.

Canes put 7 at the LOS (Line of scrimmage) but drop 3 out including former 5 star DE Lightfoot dropping in coverage and closing on a WR in space for a critical stop.

@Stevo365 looking forward to this when I am off later today. I hadn't gotten around to it and I knew it was a bye week. Appreciate your work Stevo.

Great breakdown as always.

Do you think a lot of what we prepared for was scrapped with the conditions?

Beck seemed hesitant in some instances.
Yes! All 4 games so far, this season, it has rained! The Notre Dame and UF games were in rain storms. I was at both and USF game. I watch the replay of the ND game and just watch the UF game. People watching those games on tv, they don't realize how reasonably hard but stead the rain was at Hard Rock! That field has to be the best field in the county based on the weather here in Florida! We didn't see alot of slips but the WR had to adjust! The rain was affecting passes though for both the ND and UF games!

That T Formation is super versatile if you don’t over use it. We ran it in HS. There’s a lot of goofy **** you can do out of it as long as you deploy it correctly. It’s deadly inside the 5 and the PA off of it is legit

Those QB runs vs USF already mattered. Took a defender out of the box immediately following Beck.
