No. 7 Miami Hurricanes routed the FAMU Rattlers 77-7 on Thursday night. The score was never in hand for the Rattlers; at halftime it was 49-0. Mario Cristobal and the coaching staff decided to put in the backups, where several underclassmen showed out.
Sophomore quarterback Luke Nickel was one of the most impressive players on the offensive side of the ball. He didn't miss a throw, completing all eight of his eight pass attempts for 144 yards and three scores. Freshman quarterback Dereon Coleman got his first snaps as a Miami Hurricane, completing five of his six pass attempts for 30 yards.
Freshman running back Javian Mallory led the running back group in rushing yards with 142 yards on 10 attempts for two scores. Girard Pringle Jr. also saw four snaps for 42 yards. Walk-on tailback Jack Whitehouse ran hard, rushing for 57 yards on five carries.
The Hurricanes spread the ball around to 16 different receivers. Freshman wide-out Vance Spafford had an amazing start to his career, catching a touchdown while in double coverage. He recorded three receptions for 53 yards and one score. Alongside Spafford was Somourian Wingo, who added two receptions for 59 yards and a score.
On the opposite side of the ball, freshman defensive back JJ Dunnigan was flying around all night, sticking his nose into tackles and leading the team with five. Linebacker Ezekiel Marclein added three tackles and one tackle for loss, while defensive back Cortez Redding added three tackles and a pass breakup.
