No. 7 Miami Hurricanes routed the FAMU Rattlers 77-7 on Thursday night. The score was never in hand for the Rattlers; at halftime it was 49-0. Mario Cristobal and the coaching staff decided to put in the backups, where several underclassmen showed out.

Sophomore quarterback Luke Nickel was one of the most impressive players on the offensive side of the ball. He didn't miss a throw, completing all eight of his eight pass attempts for 144 yards and three scores. Freshman quarterback Dereon Coleman got his first snaps as a Miami Hurricane, completing five of his six pass attempts for 30 yards.

Freshman running back Javian Mallory led the running back group in rushing yards with 142 yards on 10 attempts for two scores. Girard Pringle Jr. also saw four snaps for 42 yards. Walk-on tailback Jack Whitehouse ran hard, rushing for 57 yards on five carries.

The Hurricanes spread the ball around to 16 different receivers. Freshman wide-out Vance Spafford had an amazing start to his career, catching a touchdown while in double coverage. He recorded three receptions for 53 yards and one score. Alongside Spafford was Somourian Wingo, who added two receptions for 59 yards and a score.

On the opposite side of the ball, freshman defensive back JJ Dunnigan was flying around all night, sticking his nose into tackles and leading the team with five. Linebacker Ezekiel Marclein added three tackles and one tackle for loss, while defensive back Cortez Redding added three tackles and a pass breakup.

Cristobal started subbing out the starters at halftime, making it a great start for several underclassmen to get their careers at Miami underway. Which underclassmen impressed you the most?

I was happy to see our kickoffs go further into the end zone. He had kicked a few short and I was a bit worried.

None starting LBers looked like they want snaps. 17,30,4,11

JJ looks like he could play 4 positions: cb, nickel, fs, SS…if he was 20lbs heavier OLB. He was fluid enough to play in space and didn’t mind mixing it up in the box.

Coleman needs some snaps with the 2s. The arm is better than Luke. Can he speed up the processing to be a #1? Was he the best running QB since the 90s?

62- Ralph Scroggins needs a ship too. Hard to say if he ever starts here but he did fine vs Famu

 

There were some guys who did well for themselves no doubt.

Above all, my hat goes off to the staff and all the way down to the 3’s and 4’s who saw time. Skill and depth aside, the fluidity and cleanliness of the operation did not skip beat.

That’s what impressed me the most. Not seeing the first mistake or penalty until the walk-ons entered the game says everything about the level of preparation, discipline, and focus this team is playing with. That doesn’t happen by accident regardless of the opponent.

 

Watching Cole McConathy lineup at TE felt wrong. Kid had juice his freshman year. He should've portaled out or be given a chance at his natural position.

Vance needs to learn that head fake to get the DB to break inside when he plans to cut outside. Luke needs to look off that safety! Still a great catch/play.

 

Not mentioned but I was pleasantly surprised with Canon Pickett. Dude is a mauler inside and loves moving people around. Liked what I saw.
