Local DT Silvera talks Miami offer (HAS COMMITTED!)

One of Miami's top needs in the 2018 class is defensive tackle and Canes coaches sent out a big local offer today to American Heritage DT Nesta Silvera.

Silvera had an idea that the offer was coming because he said Miami assistant head coach Craig Kuligowski stopped by American Heritage before signing day and told him to come to junior day in February.

"Late last week, one of my coaches said that Miami wanted my film. Miami was my dream school growing up and I've always wanted to play with that 'U' on the side of my helmet," Silvera said.

"To have the opportunity to put on for south Florida means a lot."

Silvera said that local recruits are "most definitely" looking at Miami more seriously under Mark Richt.

"You can see what this coaching staff has done and how much of a difference they've made not just recruiting-wise, but overall on the field. They had a much better season last year compared to prior seasons," he said.

Kuligowski's track record of producing NFL linemen has caught Silvera's attention for sure, but even more impressive to him was seeing the difference in Miami's front 4 play this season.

"That's something that goes through my head because he's put a lot, a lot of great players in the league. But seeing what he did with the D-Line even this season was crazy. The way I saw Chad's (Thomas) year compared to the first two was a huge improvement," Silvera said.

The 6-2, 308-pounder with a mean streak will be at Miami for junior day this upcoming Saturday, marking only his second time on campus. He was at Miami's junior day last year as well with recent signee Kai-Leon Herbert.

"Kai's like my big brother actually. Our family members are very close friends. Before I even got the offer, he kept saying 'it's coming, be patient'."

When it comes to recruiting, Silvera says he wants to enjoy the process but ultimately make his decision prior to his final high school season.

"I want to take all my official visits, but I want to get my commitment out of the way before my senior season," he said.

The Heritage product does not lack confidence, either.

"All coaches just love my physicality. There's not too many true 1-techniques who can stop every run play and do what I do. I think I'm one-of-a-kind with my talent."

Coach speak coming at you based on his highlight film.

Positives:
- good violent initial punch
- good size
- good motor and doesn't seem to quit on a play
- great form tackler
- awareness to use hands

Negatives:
- once engaged tends to stand upright
- his eyes get locked in the backfield sometimes and his feet stop moving
- rarely gets his hands inside
- relies on bullying lesser opponents
- doesn't seem to get off the ball that quickly (this may be a cases of a two gap system, not sure the defensive scheme they run)

Someone had mentioned before, how is this guy a 3-star only, I can see why. He's a good talent with lots of great tools to work with, but he really has to work on that off the line explosiveness, gets caught looking in the backfield often, which I mentioned before could be a system thing.
Keys to look for as a defensive linemen are, 1) explosiveness off the line; 2) hands use; 3) leverage; and 4) explosiveness off the line.

His best fit is the be a true 1Tech/NT who just gobbles up doubles, essentially a fridge magnet. Get his strength up and sitting at 315-325 and he'll make the remainder of the defense look good.

This kid can be the much needed replacement for Norton.
Most of the DTs we have fit the 3tech mold much better because they are more like bigger DE's. But this kid will play the 1 tech from day 1. Hopefully he'd be ready for some PT as a freshman

Doesn't need to be that heavy though. Norton is only like 305-310

Agreed. One of the first things I noticed in the highlights was him making plays playing two gap. A lot of the time, these D-line highlight tapes are just kids blowing past their man into the backfield or tossing their assignment down and making a play. It looks like the coordinator at Heritage asks him to do a lot more than just physically dominate his man.

It's odd because he doesn't fit the regular Kool DT mold. There's nobody really comparable to him on the current roster. Would be a great addition even if he only plays on running downs.

At about the 56 second mark of his highlights there , the kid he's running at on the extr point attempt full speed unblocked must be $hitting bricks. Poor guy got bulldozed and didn't even have the ball anymore

So basically a Jarron Reed type DT? Ill take that all day.

It seems like that's a similar style of defense AH asks of him. Essentially his role in a defense would likely be, in run downs creates at least a stalemate on a double (which is the standard job of a 1tech/NT) and in passing situations, while not compromising gap responsibility squeeze the face of the pocket down on the QB.

Both jobs noted above, are big boy jobs and as the prospect stated are hard to find players who take pride in doing that because you get zero recognition other then your teammates who make tonnes of plays around you.

I like him as a prospect, but as a poster said in a previous post, we haven't recruited these types with this coaching staff, Jenkins and Norton are those guy on the roster right now. Another poster said, he better get ready to get playing time as a freshmen, well I certainly hope not, this is a position a Redshirt would really help and I would suggest it to benefit not only himself but the defense as a whole, not sure he can hack it yet vs a P5 OC and OG, yet, but he will, in time.

I have no idea nor am I concerned as long as Ty commits and he's joined by a group of savage DB's. Pat Jr. is a helluva player but he's overrated (again, nowhere near a JAG but definitely not the #1 CB in America) and IMO he would be the proverbial icing on the cake...

Do you think we currently lead for Tyson or are we behind the 8 ball?

No leading school as of yet, only a lead group. We are FIRMLY planted within that group. He's a very humble and quiet kid, so the typical SoFla diva act will not be a part of his recruitment. His folks are on the higher end of the financial spectrum within my family, so I can't see the bagman swaying him to join a bad situation. I've never directly asked his parents where they want him to go, but I know who they trust more than any other DB coach... IMO, the pull's gonna be too strong...

I love seeing prospects block multiple kicks in high school.

It's a great tell of explosiveness and, when the pressure comes through the line, it is also shows the ability to quickly generate power.
