Safeties transition to LBs much better than DEs do.

The have similar assignments and reads, who can cover well.

They just have to now make those reads from closer to the line, and have to make decisions quicker.

DEs just have to beat the guy in front of them, with no reads or instincts required.

Big difference IMO.
My recollection is that Ray Lewis was on recruiting lists as a safety. I do remember him in HS, but didn't pay much attention because I didn't see much connecting to UM in recruiting. I kind of recall an FSU interest. He was a late offer and signee for UM
I think Randy Shannon might have been a safety at Norland. There were others.

You're right about the natural transition from S to LB. Actually in Johnson's 4-3 scheme we played essentially five LBs. I recall Jimmy describing the scheme that way. He loved speed at the DE position. He never would have switched Alonzo Highsmith to RB. He would have had Highsmith and Danny Stubbs at DE.
