I think those kids (like Milo and St. Louis) can be ready to play...question is can the staff help them get there?

I may be in the minority but I think Kehoe is one of the best coaches on the staff. He got Darling and Linder ready to play last year. Whether the staff as a whole can get the most out of the team is another story, but I think Kehoe can do a good job with them individually. Really wish they had spring practice, though.

Since when do true freshman contribute on a FBS OL?

Quite often. We had three true freshmen OL contribute last year, two as starters. Flowers started as a true frosh, and Seantrel and Brandon Linder played a ton. Even a program like Alabama had a true frosh start at LT last year.

D$, by your eye, is Malc Lewis look like he's back to 100% this Spring? For sure he did not look like he was 100% last year. He was balling as a true freshmans before the injury, any way he gets back to that level this year?

Looks pretty close to me. He probably caught more passes than anybody this spring.

All I can think about is how last season we went 6-7 with 8 players that can get drafted with potentially four going in the first three rounds. Now all that talent is gone some folks think we are a better team with the same corching

It's not really that simple. We won 7 games in 2012 and 9 games in 2013, and those teams weren't as good as 2014. I think Kaaya and a solid enough defense will squeak out some wins. Last year's record is not a high bar, and even if our record is better that doesn't mean that we are where we need to be in Year 5.

With all the talent in S.Flo how is it possible that we have problems at the skill positions. SMH

I may not have communicated it well in the OP, but I'm comfortable with the skill position talent for this year. We haven't recruited WR as well as we should've for the future, but it shouldn't be felt this year. Scott is a candidate for a Hankerson/Streeter/Hurns breakout, and Coley is doing the right things for a big year.

OL a mess, no big time WR, LB spotty, DB a mess, no big time RB

How is this possible in year 5 at freaking Miami?

Rb edwards, Yearby, walton is better than any other running back group in the ACC outside of maybe fsu..... Arguably better

Lb Kirby, grace,Mccord, Owens,- top 4 better again better than anyone in the ACC.... Including fsu who's depth is horrid at the position

Db a group of elder, howard, burns, bush, carter can compete with anyone in the nation talent wise.. Top 2 in the ACC

Wideout group- top 3 in the ACC once again with coley, scott, waters, lewis, berries...

Again tell me more how we don't have big time talent in those spots? Each of the guys I named were blue chip recruits coming out of highschool except for edwards. It's no where near as bad as you and some in the thread are making it seam.... Just looking for something to talk sh*t about imo....

Oline group is a work in progress but kehoe knows how to get it done by the season

I love your eternal optimism. we all deal with death, depression, and personal sorrow differently, denial is a stage some people prefer to remain in, while others move on and face reality.

I guess the problem Is you are simply exaggerating the talent level. Blue chip recruit doesn't always mean elite player. bama and FSU have several 4-5 stars bust in each class. Also, talent level isn't correllated to wins with Al Golden. FSU and Loiuville were the only teams with more talent last year. Clemson and FSU will be the only teams with a higher recruiting ranking average this year.

Yearby is good. But is he elite? edwards hasn't shown much to be optimistic about, but maybe he becomes servicable.

What has Kirby done to be considered anything other than serviceable? Owens is still an unknown and McCord isn't guaranteed to be good at SAM. Is this really better than FSU? T. Smith, Northtup, Thomas, a #1 JUCO OLB, and 4-star Kilby Lane? Maybe, but it takes some blind homerism to conclusively state that now.

At DB, Paul Williams negates talent, and Howard is a bust. Too slow to play press man, and to soft to be a zone corner. He also can't tackle in the flats. elder and Burns could be dominant, but that is only true 2 CBs. jamal Carter would be on the scout team at FSU, LSU, Bama, etc. Typical workout warrior type that can't process information on the field. Bush is elite but has a serious history of injury. Depth and talent is a major concern at DB.

At Wideout, Lewis clearly isn't the same player post injury, Waters clearly isn't what anybody thought he was. Scott has been here 10 years and every year is his "breakout year". Coley isnt guaranteed to be elite. People hyped Him after a 500 yard freshman season full of dropped passes and lazy routes, and he quit like a girl after getting tackled in the opener with Loisuville, his attitude and commitment were questioned as a recruit, it appears those questions were valid. berrios is kind of "meh". Who is gonna stretch the field and open up underneath routes?

OL... if you think that situation is good, then I dont know what to tell you.

A lot of alleged "facts" in this post. So after one year of ball as Tr-Fr the jury is already out on Yearby and Berrios (who is as you call it, meh..) LMAO. Man Im glad none of yall were around in the early 00s when AJohnson had problems catching the ball his first two years here. You guys would have thrown him to the wolves.

You kids are in this "microwave" generation. Want to make 150k per year right out of undergrad or you will just keep skipping from job to job and you want each and every freshmen to play like Adrian Peterson or they are not "as good as advertised".

Im not ready to say that our LB core wont be as good if not better then FSU esp the way Grace is playing. Did you go to the Spring game? I was impressed.

Agree that the DB situation is not at an elite level. But when did we ever need 5 CBs ready to go, esp in this scheme? **** why you think ACrawford LEFT. We don't play 5 DBs. **** we don't play 4! We play 3 at the most in this scheme. And Burns/Elder/Howard are good enough for me. And most think Burns/Elder can be elite.

Def agree with the S problem. Carter just is there yet. Bush will have to cover up a lot of mistakes in this group.

You are nitpicking at WR. Coley had a down sophomore year. Happens to the best of them. He can bounce back. Now if he were a SR? Then I would agree with your sentiment.

You fail to mention the good that came out of Spring. Like how our Dline is playing lights out and how the light might have come on for Wyche. And if it has he could singlehandedly carry this entire defense. We all know what a good DTackle can do for a defense. And how Kaaya is playing lights out. And we know what a good QB is worth in wins for ANY team. Ask FSU now that Jameis is gone now. They got a sneak peak in the Clemson game of what life might be like for them now.

Situation isn't good yet. But I really don't know what you guys were expecting to see here. I think expectations for Spring ball were way too high judging by the reaction on this board. Either that or people just like to complain.

What is the deal with Gadbois and O'Donnell?

So you think Njoku will be a star. Wow. Hope he can carve out a role in the redzone this year.

If Kaaya stays healthy and lights the world on fire, then 7 wins are possible.

If the O-line doesn't hold up, and I'm not confident it will, then 4-5 wins is the most likely scenario.

We lost our 3 most productive offensive players, our most dependable and arguably our best defensive player, as well as several offensive lineman. I don't see how we will be better than 6-6. I'm sticking with my prediction of 5-7.

People, just like to complain. If D$ money would've came out with a overly positive observation, they would've told him he's drinking the kool-aid, part of the problem, slurper, doing it for credentials, etc.. No one knows anything of yet, that's why they are PRACTICING. But, carry on.

Excellent point about TFr's starting right-away at major college programs. McDermott, Darling, and Linder all played well last year when given the opportunity to do so.

Here's the current OL roster post spring. I've added what my assessment is of the player's skill level which of course is subjective and open to individual interpretation.
In summary, I see 5 quality starters (Darling, Gadbois, Linder, McDermott, and Isidora) and a remaining roster that is just not good enough to even be in the 2-deep. Too many upper class JAGS (Gall, Knighton, Odogwu, and Wells) and the developmental kids that JUST got started (Brown, Grimsley, and Jones).

55 - Brown, Joe - RFr - Developmental prospect.
73 - Darling, Trevor - So - Starting LT. Will be swapped w/ McDermott in the fall to RG.
76 - Gadbois, Taylor - Jr - Starting RT.
67 - Gall, Alex - Jr - JAG. Entering his 3rd year and has not shown any growth.
69 - Grimsley, Tyler - Rfr - Developmental prospect.
63 - Isidora, Danny - Jr - Starting LG.
77 - Jones, Jahair - Fr - Developmental prospect.
54 - Knighton, Hunter - RSo - JAG due to near fatal infection.
68 - Linder, Nick - So - Starting C.
52 - McDermott, Kc - So - Starting RG.
66 - Odogwu, Sunny - RSo - JAG
64 - Wells, Hunter - RSr - Doesn't belong on the D1 Level.

Now let’s look at the incoming kids. Remember that for the rotation to be effective, according to Golden of course, is 8-deep. That means Miami needs to find three kids from the incoming TFr. class that will contribute immediately.

I only see 1 guy (St.Louis) who can fill that spot. Another maybe guy in Gauthier.

Jones, Jahair – OT – Already mentioned above. He’s just not ready. He’s got Odogwu syndrome (gets high and stops moving his feet) and is not as physically gifted as Sunny. He’ll keep getting bowled over until the staff can fix his base/feet. That can take 2-3 years (look at Sunny).

Milo, Bar – OT/OG – He’s skilled enough, but strikes me as the kind of kid who needs at least two springs (RSo.) to take flight.

St. Louis, Tyree – OT – Kid is ready now. He’ll contribute immediately. May be the only real “LT” option the team has at this point.

Loftus, Brendan – OG – Like Wells, the guy just doesn’t belong here.

Mahoney, Hayden – OT/OG – Looks like he could play guard in a couple of years. He’ll need time to develop (2yrs minimum).

Gauthier, Tyler – OG – Physically ready kid. It’ll depend on how he takes to the speed of the game. Doesn’t look like a tactician (like Linder) or just a mauler (like McDermott and Darling).

14 guys
5 starters
1 Rotation guys
9 JAGS/Developmental guys.

DMoney, what do you think about the special teams? IMO, those units can mask a lot of deficiencies in other areas...

I remember when most, if not all on this site considered NICK LINDER a "JAG"...Now he's considered a solid starter. Who would've thought a kid who was considered a "JAG" could work on his craft throughout the Spring and Fall and contribute that season. Wait till after the season to judge...work in progress

TBH, when Al got here in 2011 we were hoping for the best. The 30% attrition since he's been at the Helm is finally catching up to us. D $ mentioned how we finally have 2 deep depth at DL (great), but WR, RB, DB, S, LB, and OL is thin on quality talent. W/ all the players decommitting and/or not qualifying to make it in...this is the result.

Optimism is a euphoric mental drug that often leads to complete disappointment. So for this version of the Canes team, I'll be cautiously optomistic, but it smells like another long season w/ Golden making a ton of excuses.

DMoney, what do you think about the special teams? IMO, those units can mask a lot of deficiencies in other areas...

Can't really say. It's tough for me to get a read on the return and coverage units without full live contact. The punter is good, and the kicker is inconsistent.

I agree with this take, except I think McDermott is a better fit inside than Darling.

Below are my observations from the practices, scrimmages and spring game:

....................

LINEBACKER

It's Jermaine Grace and everyone else. Grace is developing into a full-blown star who can cover, blitz and run sideline-to-sideline. Raphael Kirby has been solid but is not an impact player like Grace of Denzel Perryman. Darrion Owens plays hard and is one of the best size-speed guys on the team and he plays hard, but still hasn't had that major breakthrough. It could come in fall camp. Tyriq McCord has been a pleasant surprise at SAM and is much-improved in space.

With Perryman gone, this group really needs Juwon Young to take the next step. He is the only physical presense in a group of finesse players. He's steadily improved but still has room to grow mentally.
...............

Overall, this is Brad Kaaya's team. If we protect him, he will carry us to more wins than last year. If the offensive line struggles, it could get ugly. Defensively, the talent is there. Whether the coaches can get them to execute the scheme is another story.

They only played freshman last year because of crappy recruiting and season-enduing inujuires to two key guys in the rotation.

I can almost guarantee that UM will have the least amount of offensive plays in the ACC this year. Kaaya will not take a snap with more than 8 seconds left on the play clock, no matter the situation.

The JAG's you'll see in my list are guys that have been here long enough to PROVE that they suck with one exception, which is Loftus. Kids in the trenches take time to develop sir.

Thanks for the write up, D-Money. Can't wait for the season.

So many porsts in here.

He doesn't want to play OL. He's coming in as a DT/NT.

You have to wait until he decides to make the switch.

Depth is pretty bad. This is a 7-8 win team unless a few of the freshman are freaks or some guys really step up. Those two things are not likely to happen.

Wr, rb,s, lb, talent is the best it has been in years..... Cb top 3 is the best we have since antrel rolle left... Do you not remember we had lee chambers, Brandon McGee, mike williams from wake lol and then starting?.... Elder, howard, burns is a very good top 3....
Coley, waters, scott, berrios, lewis is better than any receiving group we have had in years and will improve greatly now that they have a real coach.... Solid top 3 with yearby, edwards, and walton. Yearby had the 3rd highest rate of ten yards or more runs behind Duke and cook in the ACC that also featured james Conner as well... Lb is the most talented and athletic group we have had since golden has been here. Do you not remember guys like Cornelius, gaines and then?
