Well lets be a little fair here, Dmoney. The ONLY RBs on that list of past UM greats that were in the same league "HS recruiting hype" wise as it pertains to Collins/Sony/Cook was McGahee and Bratton. We got lucky with EJ. Kinda like DGriffins situation. Schools didnt think he would make the grade. Butch took a shot and won BIG!! SNAKE EYES! lol.

Gore wouldnt even be here if Butch had not left and he wasnt as highly recruited as Sony or Cook. I dont even think he was a 4 star. If he was it was barely. And he would be an Ole Miss/SEC legend if it werent for Coker. He and Roscoe had there bags packed and ready for Klan country. Coker swooped in and offered Roscoe. Gore came with him and the rest is UM history. Portis was not highly rated at all. **** Najeh Davenport was probably more highly rated out of HS then all of them. Anderson and Foreman were before the days of the star system but they were not on the level of Bo Jackson, Marcus Dupree or Hershel Walker recruting wise.

My point is that we can development guys like Yearby and Powell into the greats because they have the skill set. We need to bring back the days of hard work and dedication. Thats what made us great. No doubt in my mind that Duke and Yearby will be great UM backs. I would love to have Cook and Sony too but this program wasnt built on 5 stars. It was built on guys who wanted to be here and SUPPLEMENTED with 5 stars later on. JMO.

Great post. Even McGahee can be argued in the same category since he missed (IIRC) his senior seaon with an ACL. Same deal with Najeh. These are all kids that flourished while at UM. Gore is probably the only one in that category and we almost lost him.

Edge and Gore were definitely hyped, at least locally. Everybody knew they were studs if they got their grades straight. Yearby and Powell are great football players, but they don't have that premium combination of size and ability that the other guys have. We are accustomed to NFL stars, complemented by quality players like Powell and Yearby.

smh do you remember how big Gore and Portis were coming out of HS? You act like those two were 6' 200lbs when both were about 5'10 185 putting them right there with Yearby. I guess you think Duke is overachieving too then. Man I really don't have time for this but I'm going to make a list off "all" the top players Butch missed out on from sfl his first three years here that ran to Tally/UF/etc in relation to the guys he got, because people on this site have amnesia for some reason. If you trust the head mans ability to evaluate and develope the talent, than there is no drastic losses when it comes to sfl talent except at the QB position.

Let's also keep in mind that Cleveland Gary, Leonard Conley and Stephen McGuire were the backs on some of the best teams in UM history. We will be fine with the RBs we have in the pipeline.

This is a very good point, and Yearby/Powell fit into that style (with Gus Edwards in the McGuire mold).

The guys we have are enough to win with, but I'm spoiled. Especially when the future NFLers are sitting in our backyard.

How hard did we recruit Collins and Sony? Who does Cook say is recruiting him the hardest? I do trust the head man's ability to evaluate and develop talent. But there is a reason he wanted those guys so bad. We didn't even offer Powell until Cook and Sony were committed elsewhere.

And I saw Gore in high school and Portis as a true freshman on Greentree. I don't think Yearby has as much growth potential as they did, and I am **** sure that Yearby isn't as explosive as those guys.

BTW-- McGahee was a five-star on Rivals (Sam Maldonado was #1) and Gore was a four-star. If I remember correctly, they were ranked third and tenth in the country. The rankings aren't what I'm talking about, though. ****, Yearby was a five star for a while. I'm talking about losing future NFL backs that we recruited like crazy.

Not to nitpick, but Gary was a highly rated kid coming out of HS but I get your point.

Yearby is more highly recruited then Portis ever was so I think that's a pretty unfair statement towards him. Never seen a RB who rips up the best competition in SoFla, and has done it for years, get disrespected more then Yearby.

Can't blame you. Watching the talent, especially ones that can be GREAT college players, get away is tough to watch. I guess I dont worry about it too much because to try and understand the decisions of teenagers in this day in age is just impossible, and doesn't even make sense to try.

There's no good reason Sony is a Bulldog instead of a Cane. It certainly isn't our head coach. So beyond that, dafugyagonnado? When people turned on Randy is when kids starting going elsewhere and becoming stars, which we ignored completely. Kids will always leave Miami, unfortunately, and I shudder to think how many more would be leaving if not for this staff.

It's just time to win some ******* ballgames.

Plus lets not act like recruiting hasnt turned into a monster. Ever since these guys have found a way to monetize obvious talent doesnt slip through as much. (still happens, especially with guys who are underdeveloped and/or grade casualties). I know we love to talk about the guys from yesteryear and how they were super talented but came to UM, but those guys are more known now and are going other places.

Recruiting like drafting will never be an exact science but it has gotten better over the last decade or so, if we dont want to acknowledge then so be it but its already happened. You cant say we dont need X player, then complain when we suck. We need great players to be the miami that we know and have cheered for, when local people see these local kids ball out and then leave it can be frustrating because we know it just got a little harder to win.

Oh, and just a heads up, I know some were holding out hope but I think Rashard Robinson got cleared and is LSU bound. Still have "paperwork" to take care of but he seems good to go

LOL @ Sony not being that good. Salty *** fans.

Watch his TD runs. On one of them he outruns Cypress Bay's secondary while cramping...i mean he smoked those kids...and they don't have slow DB's. On the other TD run he bounced off Cypress Bay's toughest defensive player then shook another one out of his cleats.

C'mon man.

Yearby isnt the fastest, but his vision is second to none. Yearby is a grown *** MAN on that field. His resume speaks for itself. Yearby hands down is the best RB in Dade. Cook is more explosive but not a better back. It would be huge to get both.

What did he do before that... Not a got **** thang.. Sony didnt even look like best RB on his team. #5 and #25 looked better.

While we may have gotten lucky grade-wise, there was no questioning that guy's ability. I was a junior high player who traveled (meaning I got to carry **** around and get yelled at) with the HS varsity team for our game against Immokalee. That was one of the most brutal things I've ever seen. Granted, we were a slow, small, hispanic football team, but Edge looked like an alien. I think there are 1 or 2 guys on this board who were on that varsity team. If Edge wasn't "as hyped," it was strictly for grade reasons. Every person who watched him play HS ball thought he was from another planet.

And how hard did we recruit Yearby? Just because they're recruiting a kid doesn't mean that the staff doesn't believe another kid can be just as good. if they are offering a kid before he even starts his sr season of HS they believe he can be good. Yearby had an offer just as long as the others did so he wasn't no **** second fiddle in the staffs eyes. I love Dalvin have been following the kids career and have been on of his biggest cheerleaders since I saw him dominate along with the rest of the super friends on the Miami Gardens Chargers 120lb team and have called the kid the best player in sfl but people try to act like there is this giant gap between him and Joe which is BS. Sony is whatever to me I need to see him have that run he had in the second half of the game against CB a lot more this year before I buy back into him. Especially since he's nearly a year older than the rest of his graduating class.

Yearby is nearly as big as Frank was (I saw him more time than I can count because I was in the grove all the time and he was homeboys with my lil cuz) and Yearby is definitely as big as Duke was two years ago. Also Portis was nearly the same size as both Joe and Duke when he first got to Miami. Stop acting like measurables make or break a Rb because we can all rattle off a list of Tarzans that didn't do squat.

As for McGahee I'm not talking about what Rivals ranked him (the kid that went to Colorado, Houston or whatever was actually the #1 back not that scrub from NY) schools had cooled on him because of the knee. That's not my opinion either. No one knows which one of these back if any of them at all will end up in the NFL and honestly I don't care. If a kid can help Miami win national championships I don't give a **** about what he does in the NFL.

WTF kinda question is that? Lmao

"Yeah i know he ran for like 150 yards and had two impressive touchdowns but what did he do before that?"

How stupid does that sound?

First Off: 5 is not a RB
Second: Nobody even touched 25 on his TD. That play was a product of a good play call that fooled Cypress. I could've scored on that play.

LOL. Okay, you got me.. maybe i am a little salty.. Isiah Mackenzie looked **** good when they had him in the backfield. And #25 looked just as good if not better than Sony. Sony will be able to shut me up this week. I will be watching.

Fair enough. Like you said, until they step on the field this all comes down to personal opinion.

I'm a younger guy, so I got into recruiting by following superfreaks who dominated South Florida like McGahee, AJ and Sean Taylor. When I watch guys like Cook, Michel and Collins, they remind me of those guys. Time will tell if they live up to it.

I look at Yearby the same way I look at Tracy Howard. When I first saw Howard, I focused on the physical part and was very underwhelmed. The more you watch him, the more you appreciate his instincts and smooth game. Yearby is the same way. But as much as this program needs Tracy Howards (and it does), we also need some Patrick Petersons. That's what I think Cook would give us.

Don't mistake it D, I want Dalvin just like I want all the top players from sfl. If you going to put on for anyone why not for your city, but I know we always loss kids down here (for a variety of reasons) but also understand the difference in talent between the top guy and the next guy isn't that great most of the time. So as long as the staff identifies the talent that is capable of becoming as good as those other guys instead of leaving us deficient at a position (ala WR under Coker) cause we missed the main guy I'm cool. Give me a roster with a ton of sfl/fl kids that are hungry and ready to work and teachers that are ready to teach and get the best out of those players and we don't miss the ones that get away.

For ex in 97' I remember people down here were tripping because Butch missed on Orlando, Gib, and Rohan and bought in guys like Santana (as a walk on) and some Ed Reed kid. Guess what eventhough those three guys had good college careers (I think Gibson even ended up being a 1st Rd draft pick) we didn't miss those losses at all, because the staff at the time identified capable replacements and the guys we got busted there behinds while here to get the most out of there abilities.

Now before someone acts like the Ed Reed was a two star story is played out and that doesn't happen anymore just stop please. It still happens today and happens a lot in sfl because there is to much talent for everyone down here to be 5/4 star kids. If Joe was coming out any other year (including last year because he would've been rated higher than Collins) people would be slobbing all over him. but because he's coming out with Dalvin/Sony he'll be viewed as the contributor and they're the stars that got away. Joe's the only one so far to put up over 2 stacks, not Sony and not Dalvin (who last fall most didn't even know wth he was). That kid did and he did it on a rebuilding Central team that was full of youngsters. Now he's the extreme example but there are countless kids that don't even have the fanfare Yearby does all across Dade and Broward that are going to be ballas at the next level. And the next level is all I care about. Until we start winning again I really don't give a **** about the NFLU thing because it's all we've had to talk about for a decade while our program has been whallowing in obscurity and it's become lame. Give me the guys that can be talents in college and can help us win MNC even if they are all just contributors and I'll be happy as a pig in ---- even if none of them ever play a down in the league #truestory
