...is age.

We saw it last week with the rain delay. Nobody lost focus. These are mature, experienced dudes with their eyes on the prize. Look at the ages of some of our key players this year:

9th year players

Cam McCormick

6th year players

Meesh Powell
Zach Carpenter
Elijah Alston
CJ Clark
Marley Cook

5th year players

Cam Ward
Xavier Restrepo
Jalen Rivers
Tyler Baron
Akheem Mesidor
Daryl Porter
Simeon Barrow

4th year players

Francisco Mauigoa
Elijah Arroyo
Jacolby George

Yes, this team is more talented. Yes, this team is deeper. But this is also an old, experienced team. That's the hidden advantage of using the Portal wisely to layer over your talented high school signees.

-Excellent point...

2021 taught me not to care about that. Can't wait for the geriatrics to get gone.

This experience will hopefully result in focus throughout the season and greatly reduce the chances of a bad game due to complacently or taking an opponent lightly.

Yup age is incredibly important and one of the reasons we lost so many games last year and in years past. You cannot expect freshmen and sophomores to compete with full grown dudes. It is not just a key for tonight but for seasons going forward. The pups need time to develop. Great post Dmoney

75% of each position group is our own high school kids.

We’ve recruited well the past 2 or 3 years.

Those kids mature and pair them with a new group of portals next year…nah, we won’t be shredded
Shredded meaning lose guys. Team gets cut up.

Haunted us for nearly two decades. We couldn’t get a decent player to stay more than 3 years

. Portal and NIL helped us get that balanced out. I think we all know having the upper hand in these games on a mental level is at least half the battle if not more. 100% a huge game changer.

Man all BS to the left! I was Bullish on us this yr bc of Cam. I saw him at Wash St & in the Spring game! That defense is stoopid & that offense is ridiculous & the running game ain’t even got kookin yet! I knew we were gon be real good but I’m starting to think if Cam stays healthy then we have a shot at a real Natty run

We get shredded next year!! 😖
That’s a lot of great productivity.
Hope that 2nd team is ready.
Let next yr take kare of next yr when it kums (BIG PAUSE). As of right now jus luv win the moment

Thought it was the schedule

Agreed, reminds me of CHL teams layering last-year-eligible hockey kids -- 20 years old 6-4 215 lb dudes -- with talented 14-16yo future NHL stars to keep the bottom from dropping out in critical situations.

Can't speak to the makeup of KSU altogether but the 19yo QB definitely could've benefitted from a veteran presence buoying him against BYU.

Instead the bottom fell out & BYU won by like 30 with less than 250 yards of offense or something.

All reminds me of the value 11th year senior Shayon Green once brought to the D.

Another positive of NIL is guys coming back for 4th and 5th years. Get that sure rhinh money if you’re not a first rounder.

What kid graded below 3rd round wouldn't want to come play for Mario after watching Cam, Baron, Meesh, Barrow? Make what you'd make in the NFL with another shot to get that guaranteed money and all the opportunity to prove yourself.

I recall the cries that the NIL would ruin college football - but I think we're seeing some of the best in college football - EVER.

NIL gives somewhat overlooked or underrated players who were actually very, very good players - a chance to move to higher level programs to really strut their stuff.

For years, I marveled at some top NFL draft players from small schools - or Hall of Famers who played at some small school in college.

Now? If you're really skilled and a great player - overlooked by the bigger schools - now you can have a chance to get noticed by the larger programs and introduce yourself to big time football.

And how many times have some of our players in days past jump prematurely and declare for the draft - and got - nothing?

NIL is a type of leavening.

Not saying we get shredded next year but right now, the way Cam is playing, it will be nearly impossible to replace him.

He is basically doing for us what Cam Newton did for Auburn back in 2010 when they won it all.
