5-star OT Wright anticipates UM official visit, talks Canes, Turnover Chain at the Opening
Huntington (WV) 5-star OT Darnell Wright is universally considered a top 5 prospect in the 2019 class and has been talking about visiting the Canes for a few months now since he got his UM offer back in January. Out at the Opening Finals in Frisco, Texas this weekend, Wright elaborated more on when he could come to see Coral Gables.
“I like Miami, I just want to go down there,” Wright said. “I really like Miami. I’m going to try to take an official down there since it’s so far away, that may be the only way I can get down there.”
What other schools does Wright think he may officially visit?
“It’ll probably be some farther schools. Schools like Clemson or maybe UNC. Alabama, Tennessee, and Penn State too.”
While Wright wasn’t much of a football fan as a child, there was one school he always did follow from his youngest days: the Miami Hurricanes.
“I didn’t watch much football growing up, it was weird, but the one school that always had my eye was Miami.”
Now that he’s being recruited by his childhood favorite, Wright says there’s plenty to like about UM that is drawing him in.
“There’s so many good things,” Wright said on UM. “Very good coach on the O-Line (Stacy Searels). The weather, it’s beautiful in Miami I’ve heard and seen, so that’s hard to beat. Everything outside of football, you’re going to be happy there. And then their program itself, you saw the results this year.”
Also getting his attention? The hype of the Turnover Chain.
“Man, I wish I played defense for that!” Wright said on the Chain. “The QB might have to throw a pick and let me get it back.”
There was a time in his recruitment where many considered it a matter of time before Wright committed to Ohio State. However, Wright says that was never the case and that things between his favorites are much more even.
“That basically just comes from people talking,” Wright said. “Wherever you go the most, people are going to say you’re going to go there. It was just close to home, so that’s why I visited them (OSU) a lot.”
Miami has had their struggles on the O-Line the past few seasons and, as such, the Canes have plenty of playing time available on the O-Line. However, it doesn’t seem getting on the field right away is a main priority for Wright.
“Early playing time, it matters, but I don’t want to rush into it,” Wright said. “If there’s a spot to fill, I’m going to do my best to fill it, but it’s not a deciding factor.”
