Welcome to the sixth 2020 edition of the column I like to call “The Freshman 15”. If you’re a first time reader, this will be a focus on the rankings and the order of the top 15 targets the coaching staff is pursuing.
The order will be based mainly on:
From last month's board, UM landed #10 Brian Balom at safety. After a slow few months, recruiting has really picked up lately, and Miami has made an effort to expand their board at WR, DB, and OL. With two months until the first signing day, spots in Category20 are becoming scarce and UM is focusing on a few top-tier prospects to close things out.
Let’s get into the board for October.
1. Justin Flowe, LB, Upland, CA (Upland) (Last Month: 2)
Ht 6-2 | Wt 225 | 247 Composite: 5-Star, #5 Overall
Evaluation: Flowe has a prototype inside linebacker frame with a powerful lower body. Plays with a non-stop motor that, when combined with his freakish athleticism, makes him extremely disruptive all over the field and he is always around the ball to make a play. Clocked an impressive 4.68 laser 40 recently and his coverage ability has improved year-to-year in high school. A truly violent and devastating hitter. Takes on blocks well, and knows how to use his strength and hands to shed and wrap up the ballcarrier.
In The Mix: Flowe’s top 4 includes Clemson, Georgia, Oregon, and Miami.
Latest: Program sources feel like this is shaping up as a Clemson and Miami battle, with the Tigers ahead of the Canes at this point. UM will step up to the plate and get their shot to unseat Dabo Swinney as the favorite on November 8th weekend, as Flowe will be in Coral Gables for his first official and watch the Louisville game from the stands. He will follow that trip up with weekend OV’s to Clemson, UGA, and Oregon respectively. With all his officials to his favorites out of the way by the end of November, there is a chance he makes his decision early and signs in December, although he hasn’t confirmed this yet. As I’ve always said, the OV will tell the story here, and we’ll know just where Miami really sits with Flowe after that visit.
2. Jaylen Harrell, DE, Tampa, FL (Berkeley Prep) (Last Month: 7)
Ht 6-4 | Wt 235 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #299 Overall
Evaluation: An athletic specimen that plays all over the field for Berkeley Prep. Tremendous explosion off the snap and is very fluid for someone of his size. Uses his hands violently, and is workmanlike in setting linemen up to the outside, only to quickly burst inside. Shows the ability to drop back in coverage if necessary and hold his own. Impressive closing speed when he locks onto a target, and finishes his takedowns in a punishing manner.
In The Mix: Seems to be a Big 3 battle between Miami, UF, and FSU, along with Michigan now.
Latest: I like that Harrell is going out of his way to prove his interest in Miami, as he locked in an OV to Miami 3 months in advance; that will take place in mid-December. Michigan has also thrown their hat in the ring and gotten Harrell to commit to an OV this weekend as well. The Canes brought Harrell in for the first fall practice just before the dead period, showing just how interested they still are, and Harrell followed that up by sitting in the stands for the UM-UF opener. UM also sent coaches to watch him play last month. Talking to a source close to the recruitment, it’s actually FSU, not UF, that is going to be Miami’s main competition here, and his relationship with Odell Haggins is very strong.
3. Ruben Hyppolite, LB, Hollywood, FL (McArthur) (Last Month: 6)
Ht 6-0 | Wt 225 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #268 Overall
Evaluation: Versatile linebacker that is comfortable playing all around the field. Elite playing speed for the position that makes him a valuable asset for any defense. Quick to close and is a heat-seeking missile to the ballcarrier. Splits gaps in the offense with vigor and is proactive when shutting down a run game. Can clean up a lot of mistakes and false steps with his burst. Will chase down runners that make it past the second level.
In The Mix: The Maryland commit is still considering Miami and Alabama.
Latest: Miami has really turned up the heat here lately and Hyppolite has been receptive to their overtures. Despite his commitment to Maryland, Hyppolite continues to flirt with Miami, visiting campus twice just before the dead period, as well as for four Miami homes games so far this season. Miami is treating him like a priority right now, and Hyppolite is planning OV’s to Maryland, Alabama, and UM during the fall. He recently cancelled a planned OV to Penn State and says the Nittany Lions are now out of the mix. If Miami misses on Flowe, the Canes will be able to sell Hyppolite on being the top LB in this class and all the open playing time that comes with it in 2020. He’ll make his final decision in December.
4. Jalen Harrell, S, Hialeah, FL (Champagnat Catholic) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-2 | Wt 180 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #234 Overall
Evaluation: Elite in run support and shows very good tackling form. Comfortable working in the box and cleaning up plays at the second level. Demonstrates great closing burst to make a play on the ball. Launches himself like a projectile at his target and is a devastating hitter. Physical DB that loves to play press-man and bump and run. Works his off-hand well. Shows good pattern recognition and instincts that help him shut down yards after catch. Versatile defender you can move around to many areas of the field.
In The Mix: The former FSU commit is now considering UM, Georgia Tech, Nebraska, UCF, FSU, Florida, and Notre Dame.
Latest: Harrell made news recently when he decommitted from the Florida State Seminoles on Tuesday, opening up his recruitment to see what other schools have to offer. The Canes have been pushing here for the last month, and now find themselves in a very good spot for the 4-star defender. A long-time relationship with coach Banda and being close to home seem to be working in Miami’s favor at this point, and Harrell was in the stands this weekend watching Miami take on Georgia Tech for his first Hurricanes’ game as an invited recruit. Things are trending positively right now between the parties, but Harrell is going to make sure he takes all his visits before making another decision. He has an official set to UCF for November 1st weekend, and also would like to see Nebraska and GT for officials in addition to Miami. With only two months before he signs early in December, he’s running out of time to build other relationships, which is another positive for Miami. It should be noted that Harrell recently told CIS that FSU is not out of the mix either.
5. Brian George, CB, Highland, KS (Highland C.C.) (Last Month: 5)
Ht 6-2 | Wt 190 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, N/A Overall
Evaluation: Brings incredible physicality on the outside of a defense. Striking speed to go along with a long frame and strong build. Has the aggressive demeanor to jam a receiver into oblivion. Lives in his man’s hip pocket and is tough to separate from. Above average tackler that could be an asset in the run game and locks down the edge of the defense.
In The Mix: George has a top 10 of Miami, UGA, Oklahoma, Alabama, UF, Texas A&M, Kentucky, Arkansas, Nebraska, and Auburn.
Latest: Texas A&M jumped in here recently, and George took an OV to College Station last weekend to witness the Aggies fall to Alabama. George previously cancelled a planned OV to Kentucky, but he is working on rescheduling that. Auburn is another school that is heavily-involved here, as George visited the Tigers just before the dead period in June and was rumored to be ready to make a decision shortly after his visit, but he ended up holding off. Based on that, Auburn isn’t as confident here as they once were. This recruitment seems pretty wide-open right now, but I’d feel more confident if George firmly committed to a UM official visit. Until that happens, I’ll take the field as of now.
6. Darnell Washington, TE, Las Vegas, NV (Desert Pines) (Last Month: 3)
Ht 6-8 | Wt 260 | 247 Composite: 5-Star, #11 Overall
Evaluation: A physical presence with an incredibly chiseled frame. Long strider as a runner and clocked a 4.78 laser 40, but seems quicker on tape. Great hands and knows how to use his body to make himself an available target. True red-zone weapon that makes quick work of linebackers and safeties. Knows how to high point the ball in traffic. Big target who can run past most linebackers.
In The Mix: Washington has a top 5 of Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida in addition to Miami.
Latest: Washington has now taken officials to UGA and UF, while having scheduled an official to Alabama for Nov. 8th weekend; Miami and Tennessee will receive the final two OV’s. Although I know UM’s confidence remains decently high, my personal confidence has steadily been decreasing here. According to a source close to the recruitment, Washington has privately been raving about how active the tight ends have been in Dan Enos’ offense; however, he really loved his official to UGA last month, as the game experience in Athens seemed really appeal to Washington. Like many others, I have UGA out in front and I’m close to putting in a pick for UGA, but I’ll wait and see what is coming out of Coral Gables after his Miami OV to say for sure.
7. Eli Acker, OT, Columbus, MS (Heritage Academy) (Last Month: 9)
Ht 6-6 | Wt 285 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #407 Overall
Evaluation: Acker is a long and lean tackle with a mean-streak that plays both ways in high school. A pure tackle prospect, he is an advanced run-blocker and has the frame and athleticism to excel in pass protection with more development. He is a powerful drive blocker that can redirect his man an create big lanes for his back. Would like to see him play with more bend and leverage in the passing game.
In The Mix: The Ole Miss commit is considering the flip to Miami and Mississippi State.
Latest: The Canes have been after Acker for a few months now, but finally got him on campus for Paradise in June. Being from Mississippi and not taking many school visits, Acker and his family were wowed by the experience of being in the city of Miami and the campus of Coral Gables. He’s admitted that UM is now closing in on Ole Miss and that he plans to return on an official visit this fall. Butch Barry has really made a connection here and the pitch has been that Acker can come be a day 1 contributor at Miami. Although Ole Miss is the local school here, Acker has shown legitimate interest in UM and represents the type of battle with second-tier SEC schools that Miami should be winning.
8. Dazalin Worsham, WR, Trussville, AL (Hewitt-Trussville) (Last Month: 4)
Ht 6-0 | Wt 185 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #245 Overall
Evaluation: Smooth and athletic strider. Plays with sudden feet on routes underneath. Plays much faster than his listed 4.8 speed. Will take what the defense gives him and shows ability as a possession receiver. Huge threat in the screen game as an elusive runner after the catch in the open field with a shred of daylight. Impressive body control in every direction to haul in passes.
In The Mix: Miami and Alabama are his final 2.
Latest: Worsham took an official visit to Miami in June and it seemed like only a matter of time before he publicly became part of the class. The confidence coming from Miami’s end has lowered a bit now that it’s been four months and that hasn’t happened; it seems the visit high wore off here. Worsham is considering Alabama again after they started pushing for him even harder since his decommitment from the Crimson Tide and he admitted Alabama had retaken the lead last month. I also don’t like that UM has already burned their official visit here, while Alabama could still use their OV at any time and potentially lock him up. Things are trending in the wrong direction here.
9. Douglas Emilien, WR, Fort Lauderdale, FL (American Heritage) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-0 | Wt 175 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #546 Overall
Evaluation: At just a shade under 6 feet, Emilien shows great quickness and has all the best attributes of a top notch slot receiver: burst in short areas, strong hands, run after the catch prowess, and excellent route running. Demonstrates electric feet for sharp cuts. Suddenness is elite. Versatile enough to stick on the outside, and can create separation from bigger and stronger corners. Exceptional at high pointing the football.
In The Mix: LSU, WVU, Cincinnati, and Miami make up a vague top group for Emilien.
Latest: Emilien is a kid that has flown mostly under the radar during this cycle. However, a huge senior campaign has opened the eyes of many programs, as schools like LSU, WVU, Cincinnati, and Miami jumped into the mix last month. After blowing up so quickly during the middle of his senior season, Emilien hasn’t taken much time to sort out his favorites or take visits, but he did show up in the recruiting section for Miami’s win over CMU last month and the GT loss last weekend. He’s also set his UM official visit weekend for December 13th weekend, the same weekend all the commits are coming and the last weekend before the early signing period, so that’s another positive for Miami. Emilien is also planning a visit to LSU at some point, along with OV’s to WVU and Cincinnati. The Canes are certainly in a strong position heading down the stretch here.
10. Cayden Baker, OT, Fort Myers, FL (Fort Myers) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-6 | Wt 260 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #1,159 Overall
Evaluation: Baker played tight end and defensive end as a junior, so there is no publicly available tape of him playing on the OL. This means he’s extremely raw, but you do notice his athletic traits right away, and his physicality as a DL will certainly translate nicely on offense. Drives his blocker back and draws power from his lower base. A Butch Barry special, as in an athletic lineman that is long and lean.
In The Mix: Miami, Michigan, UNC, Pitt, and Indiana.
Latest: With Issiah Walker now off the board, it’s safe to say Baker now has a spot if he wants one and he has become much more important to the class. Baker has had a low-key recruiting process thus far, and has only visited Miami and North Carolina. He’ll follow up that summer visit to UNC with his first official visit of the process set to check out the Tar Heels this weekend. He’s also looking to take officials to Miami, Pitt, and Indiana as well. A wrench was thrown into this recruitment when Michigan offered last week, and the Wolverines could radically change things here. I’m told Baker is currently leaning towards going out of state, but we’ll see how he’s affected by UM and Butch Barry turning up the heat down the stretch.
11. Jaiden Francois, S, Homestead, FL (South Dade) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-0 | Wt 185 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #284 Overall
Evaluation: Shows on tape that he has a nose for the football and displays an impeccable football IQ. He is comfortable oscillating back and forth from the box to playing deep and would make a great lockdown corner or a ball-hawking safety at the next level. Makes plays at the line and can run and cover with just about any receiver on the outside, showing great positional versatility.
In The Mix: Ohio State, Penn State, Florida, and UM are involved for Francois.
Latest: After leaving Miami’s class last week for a second time, it seemed the relationship between Francois and UM was going to come to a close. The only competitors Francois had been looking at were Ohio State, UF, and Penn State, and Francois visited both the Buckeyes and Gators within the past few months. However, there has been interesting developments here in the past week, as Ohio State may now be full at DB and UF has still not formally offered Francois a scholarship. As of now, that really only leaves Penn State and Miami as Francois’ options; he’s never even visited Penn State and still has not set up a trip there despite hinting at one for months. Maybe someone else gets involved down the stretch, but Francois’ timetable is shrinking fast as someone who is planning on graduating early in December and enrolling for spring ball. The situation reminds me a bit of the Sam Brooks decommitment last year: More and more, it seems as if Francois made an impulsive decision without really thinking through his options. I’m skeptical because third commitments are super rare, but as of now, I’m told there is still absolutely a chance he mends things with UM’s staff and is a part of this class. That’s already started to happen, as he set up an official for Dec. 13th weekend to visit along with all the commits, and he visited for the GT game last weekend.
12. Marlon Martinez, OG, Fort Lauderdale, FL (St. Thomas) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-5 | Wt 285 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #660 Overall
Evaluation: Versatile enough to work at tackle or guard. Shows exceptional ability in to pull, quickly get out in front, and pummel his target. Decent at redirect blocks in pass pro. Digs opponents out of their anchored spot and moves them where he wants them to go. Well-timed and compact initial punch. Would like to see slightly better bend. Good hand placement.
In The Mix: The LSU commit is really only considering Miami at this point.
Latest: Martinez is a recent offeree that is a South Florida product from a local powerhouse in St. Thomas. The problem is that Martinez has been solidly committed to LSU since May, and Miami essentially paid no attention to him for most of the cycle. For his part, Martinez is only considering a potential flip to Miami, and has taken a visit recently for the CMU game last month. Right now, Miami is certainly on the outside looking in, and it’s looking more like Martinez sees UM as a backup option were anything drastic to happen with LSU. Still, the staff has been pushing hard here and will attempt to really start building a relationship with Martinez and his family.
13. Kentron Poitier, WR, Miami, FL (Miami Palmetto) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-2 | Wt 200 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #560 Overall
Evaluation: A big-bodied receiver that mainly does his work on the outside. Exceptional body control to adjust in mid-air for a pass. Effectively shields off defenders and high-points the ball. Sports extreme-level focus, top-notch hands, and concentration to make tough catches look easy. A terror in the red zone and a true deep threat. Would like to see more variation in his route tree.
In The Mix: Tennessee, Syracuse, FSU, UF, Louisville, South Carolina, and Miami.
Latest: Despite releasing a top 6 without Miami back in July, Poitier continues to show interest in the UM program. With things not looking as solid with Worsham, Miami picked back up contact with Poitier and got him to come to the last three home games, so traction is certainly building here. Poitier is looking to set up an official visit down the line to Miami, and has already taken one to Syracuse over the summer. Instead of the Orange, though, the school to watch out for here would be UF, as I’m told from a source Poitier is taking a heavy-look at the Gators and wants to set up an official to Gainesville the weekend of the UF-FSU game. I’m told he is a take for Florida at this point too.
14. Ronald Williams, CB, Hutchinson, KS (Hutchinson C.C.) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-2 | Wt 190 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, N/A Overall
Evaluation: A HS quarterback, Williams is still learning the finer points of the position and is very raw as of now. However, his athletic traits are off the charts. Pairs a tall and lanky frame with exceptional ball skills to become a danger for opposing QB’s. Breaks quickly on the ball and demonstrates good burst in short areas. His length really bothers WR’s and allows him to get to more balls than the average corner.
In The Mix: Kentucky, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Nebraska, Mississippi State, and Miami.
Latest: Originally a Louisiana-native, Williams has been a late-bloomer that is slowly starting to garner major attention. The Canes offered only earlier this week, and he could very well replace George on the board if things fall through there. Miami wouldn’t get involved with a JUCO kid unless they were serious, so Williams is going to be a notable target going forward assuming he reciprocates Miami’s interest, although it’s obviously too soon to tell. An interesting wrinkle here is that Williams is former teammates with Miami OL Ousman Traore, who the Canes pulled from Hutchinson last cycle. He’s taking an OV to Kentucky this weekend and he seems pretty wide-open at this point with so many new contenders in his recruitment.
15. RJ Adams, OG, Woodbridge, VA (Woodbridge) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-3 | Wt 315 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #362 Overall
Evaluation: Adams is a mauler in the run game, showing hyper-aggressive traits to drive block his opponents out of their gaps. Athletic enough to get to the second level, lock onto smaller targets, and pave massive space for his runner. Thrives as a move blocker in space. Demonstrates good body positioning against speed rushers and knows how to use his strength to his advantage to throw them off balance.
In The Mix: Penn State, Kentucky, and Miami.
Latest: There’s a few targets that could reasonably go here, but Adams is an interesting case to me. Adams first visited UM in the spring, and it seemed like there might be some traction here; however, Adams committed to Penn State shortly after that. Last month, Adams decommitted, but continued to keep a strong relationship with Penn State, visiting twice for games in the past month. At his visit to Happy Valley this past weekend, a source close to the recruitment told us that he intended to recommit to PSU. However, it seems Penn State is keeping him on ice and is waiting on other targets before accepting his commitment at this point. Instead of waiting around on PSU, we reported yesterday that Adams is calling around to set up official visits and Miami is one school he has been in contact with. Kentucky is one official visit Adams has already taken, but with 4 open slots, there is a good chance Miami gets one of those trips. His relationship with Miami is just starting up again, so it will take some time to know how realistic he is to add to this class, but he is certainly worth monitoring at this point. I will say the vibe I’ve gotten by talking to the source is that PSU is still out in front if they’ll take him.

In The Mix: The former FSU commit is now considering UM, Georgia Tech, Nebraska, UCF, FSU, Florida, and Notre Dame.
Latest: Harrell made news recently when he decommitted from the Florida State Seminoles on Tuesday, opening up his recruitment to see what other schools have to offer. The Canes have been pushing here for the last month, and now find themselves in a very good spot for the 4-star defender. A long-time relationship with coach Banda and being close to home seem to be working in Miami’s favor at this point, and Harrell was in the stands this weekend watching Miami take on Georgia Tech for his first Hurricanes’ game as an invited recruit. Things are trending positively right now between the parties, but Harrell is going to make sure he takes all his visits before making another decision. He has an official set to UCF for November 1st weekend, and also would like to see Nebraska and GT for officials in addition to Miami. With only two months before he signs early in December, he’s running out of time to build other relationships, which is another positive for Miami. It should be noted that Harrell recently told CIS that FSU is not out of the mix either.
5. Brian George, CB, Highland, KS (Highland C.C.) (Last Month: 5)
Ht 6-2 | Wt 190 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, N/A Overall
Evaluation: Brings incredible physicality on the outside of a defense. Striking speed to go along with a long frame and strong build. Has the aggressive demeanor to jam a receiver into oblivion. Lives in his man’s hip pocket and is tough to separate from. Above average tackler that could be an asset in the run game and locks down the edge of the defense.
In The Mix: George has a top 10 of Miami, UGA, Oklahoma, Alabama, UF, Texas A&M, Kentucky, Arkansas, Nebraska, and Auburn.
Latest: Texas A&M jumped in here recently, and George took an OV to College Station last weekend to witness the Aggies fall to Alabama. George previously cancelled a planned OV to Kentucky, but he is working on rescheduling that. Auburn is another school that is heavily-involved here, as George visited the Tigers just before the dead period in June and was rumored to be ready to make a decision shortly after his visit, but he ended up holding off. Based on that, Auburn isn’t as confident here as they once were. This recruitment seems pretty wide-open right now, but I’d feel more confident if George firmly committed to a UM official visit. Until that happens, I’ll take the field as of now.
6. Darnell Washington, TE, Las Vegas, NV (Desert Pines) (Last Month: 3)
Ht 6-8 | Wt 260 | 247 Composite: 5-Star, #11 Overall
Evaluation: A physical presence with an incredibly chiseled frame. Long strider as a runner and clocked a 4.78 laser 40, but seems quicker on tape. Great hands and knows how to use his body to make himself an available target. True red-zone weapon that makes quick work of linebackers and safeties. Knows how to high point the ball in traffic. Big target who can run past most linebackers.
In The Mix: Washington has a top 5 of Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida in addition to Miami.
Latest: Washington has now taken officials to UGA and UF, while having scheduled an official to Alabama for Nov. 8th weekend; Miami and Tennessee will receive the final two OV’s. Although I know UM’s confidence remains decently high, my personal confidence has steadily been decreasing here. According to a source close to the recruitment, Washington has privately been raving about how active the tight ends have been in Dan Enos’ offense; however, he really loved his official to UGA last month, as the game experience in Athens seemed really appeal to Washington. Like many others, I have UGA out in front and I’m close to putting in a pick for UGA, but I’ll wait and see what is coming out of Coral Gables after his Miami OV to say for sure.
7. Eli Acker, OT, Columbus, MS (Heritage Academy) (Last Month: 9)
Ht 6-6 | Wt 285 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #407 Overall
Evaluation: Acker is a long and lean tackle with a mean-streak that plays both ways in high school. A pure tackle prospect, he is an advanced run-blocker and has the frame and athleticism to excel in pass protection with more development. He is a powerful drive blocker that can redirect his man an create big lanes for his back. Would like to see him play with more bend and leverage in the passing game.
In The Mix: The Ole Miss commit is considering the flip to Miami and Mississippi State.
Latest: The Canes have been after Acker for a few months now, but finally got him on campus for Paradise in June. Being from Mississippi and not taking many school visits, Acker and his family were wowed by the experience of being in the city of Miami and the campus of Coral Gables. He’s admitted that UM is now closing in on Ole Miss and that he plans to return on an official visit this fall. Butch Barry has really made a connection here and the pitch has been that Acker can come be a day 1 contributor at Miami. Although Ole Miss is the local school here, Acker has shown legitimate interest in UM and represents the type of battle with second-tier SEC schools that Miami should be winning.
8. Dazalin Worsham, WR, Trussville, AL (Hewitt-Trussville) (Last Month: 4)
Ht 6-0 | Wt 185 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #245 Overall
Evaluation: Smooth and athletic strider. Plays with sudden feet on routes underneath. Plays much faster than his listed 4.8 speed. Will take what the defense gives him and shows ability as a possession receiver. Huge threat in the screen game as an elusive runner after the catch in the open field with a shred of daylight. Impressive body control in every direction to haul in passes.
In The Mix: Miami and Alabama are his final 2.
Latest: Worsham took an official visit to Miami in June and it seemed like only a matter of time before he publicly became part of the class. The confidence coming from Miami’s end has lowered a bit now that it’s been four months and that hasn’t happened; it seems the visit high wore off here. Worsham is considering Alabama again after they started pushing for him even harder since his decommitment from the Crimson Tide and he admitted Alabama had retaken the lead last month. I also don’t like that UM has already burned their official visit here, while Alabama could still use their OV at any time and potentially lock him up. Things are trending in the wrong direction here.
9. Douglas Emilien, WR, Fort Lauderdale, FL (American Heritage) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-0 | Wt 175 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #546 Overall
Evaluation: At just a shade under 6 feet, Emilien shows great quickness and has all the best attributes of a top notch slot receiver: burst in short areas, strong hands, run after the catch prowess, and excellent route running. Demonstrates electric feet for sharp cuts. Suddenness is elite. Versatile enough to stick on the outside, and can create separation from bigger and stronger corners. Exceptional at high pointing the football.
In The Mix: LSU, WVU, Cincinnati, and Miami make up a vague top group for Emilien.
Latest: Emilien is a kid that has flown mostly under the radar during this cycle. However, a huge senior campaign has opened the eyes of many programs, as schools like LSU, WVU, Cincinnati, and Miami jumped into the mix last month. After blowing up so quickly during the middle of his senior season, Emilien hasn’t taken much time to sort out his favorites or take visits, but he did show up in the recruiting section for Miami’s win over CMU last month and the GT loss last weekend. He’s also set his UM official visit weekend for December 13th weekend, the same weekend all the commits are coming and the last weekend before the early signing period, so that’s another positive for Miami. Emilien is also planning a visit to LSU at some point, along with OV’s to WVU and Cincinnati. The Canes are certainly in a strong position heading down the stretch here.
10. Cayden Baker, OT, Fort Myers, FL (Fort Myers) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-6 | Wt 260 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #1,159 Overall
Evaluation: Baker played tight end and defensive end as a junior, so there is no publicly available tape of him playing on the OL. This means he’s extremely raw, but you do notice his athletic traits right away, and his physicality as a DL will certainly translate nicely on offense. Drives his blocker back and draws power from his lower base. A Butch Barry special, as in an athletic lineman that is long and lean.
In The Mix: Miami, Michigan, UNC, Pitt, and Indiana.
Latest: With Issiah Walker now off the board, it’s safe to say Baker now has a spot if he wants one and he has become much more important to the class. Baker has had a low-key recruiting process thus far, and has only visited Miami and North Carolina. He’ll follow up that summer visit to UNC with his first official visit of the process set to check out the Tar Heels this weekend. He’s also looking to take officials to Miami, Pitt, and Indiana as well. A wrench was thrown into this recruitment when Michigan offered last week, and the Wolverines could radically change things here. I’m told Baker is currently leaning towards going out of state, but we’ll see how he’s affected by UM and Butch Barry turning up the heat down the stretch.
11. Jaiden Francois, S, Homestead, FL (South Dade) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-0 | Wt 185 | 247 Composite: 4-Star, #284 Overall
Evaluation: Shows on tape that he has a nose for the football and displays an impeccable football IQ. He is comfortable oscillating back and forth from the box to playing deep and would make a great lockdown corner or a ball-hawking safety at the next level. Makes plays at the line and can run and cover with just about any receiver on the outside, showing great positional versatility.
In The Mix: Ohio State, Penn State, Florida, and UM are involved for Francois.
Latest: After leaving Miami’s class last week for a second time, it seemed the relationship between Francois and UM was going to come to a close. The only competitors Francois had been looking at were Ohio State, UF, and Penn State, and Francois visited both the Buckeyes and Gators within the past few months. However, there has been interesting developments here in the past week, as Ohio State may now be full at DB and UF has still not formally offered Francois a scholarship. As of now, that really only leaves Penn State and Miami as Francois’ options; he’s never even visited Penn State and still has not set up a trip there despite hinting at one for months. Maybe someone else gets involved down the stretch, but Francois’ timetable is shrinking fast as someone who is planning on graduating early in December and enrolling for spring ball. The situation reminds me a bit of the Sam Brooks decommitment last year: More and more, it seems as if Francois made an impulsive decision without really thinking through his options. I’m skeptical because third commitments are super rare, but as of now, I’m told there is still absolutely a chance he mends things with UM’s staff and is a part of this class. That’s already started to happen, as he set up an official for Dec. 13th weekend to visit along with all the commits, and he visited for the GT game last weekend.
12. Marlon Martinez, OG, Fort Lauderdale, FL (St. Thomas) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-5 | Wt 285 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #660 Overall
Evaluation: Versatile enough to work at tackle or guard. Shows exceptional ability in to pull, quickly get out in front, and pummel his target. Decent at redirect blocks in pass pro. Digs opponents out of their anchored spot and moves them where he wants them to go. Well-timed and compact initial punch. Would like to see slightly better bend. Good hand placement.
In The Mix: The LSU commit is really only considering Miami at this point.
Latest: Martinez is a recent offeree that is a South Florida product from a local powerhouse in St. Thomas. The problem is that Martinez has been solidly committed to LSU since May, and Miami essentially paid no attention to him for most of the cycle. For his part, Martinez is only considering a potential flip to Miami, and has taken a visit recently for the CMU game last month. Right now, Miami is certainly on the outside looking in, and it’s looking more like Martinez sees UM as a backup option were anything drastic to happen with LSU. Still, the staff has been pushing hard here and will attempt to really start building a relationship with Martinez and his family.
13. Kentron Poitier, WR, Miami, FL (Miami Palmetto) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-2 | Wt 200 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #560 Overall
Evaluation: A big-bodied receiver that mainly does his work on the outside. Exceptional body control to adjust in mid-air for a pass. Effectively shields off defenders and high-points the ball. Sports extreme-level focus, top-notch hands, and concentration to make tough catches look easy. A terror in the red zone and a true deep threat. Would like to see more variation in his route tree.
In The Mix: Tennessee, Syracuse, FSU, UF, Louisville, South Carolina, and Miami.
Latest: Despite releasing a top 6 without Miami back in July, Poitier continues to show interest in the UM program. With things not looking as solid with Worsham, Miami picked back up contact with Poitier and got him to come to the last three home games, so traction is certainly building here. Poitier is looking to set up an official visit down the line to Miami, and has already taken one to Syracuse over the summer. Instead of the Orange, though, the school to watch out for here would be UF, as I’m told from a source Poitier is taking a heavy-look at the Gators and wants to set up an official to Gainesville the weekend of the UF-FSU game. I’m told he is a take for Florida at this point too.
14. Ronald Williams, CB, Hutchinson, KS (Hutchinson C.C.) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-2 | Wt 190 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, N/A Overall
Evaluation: A HS quarterback, Williams is still learning the finer points of the position and is very raw as of now. However, his athletic traits are off the charts. Pairs a tall and lanky frame with exceptional ball skills to become a danger for opposing QB’s. Breaks quickly on the ball and demonstrates good burst in short areas. His length really bothers WR’s and allows him to get to more balls than the average corner.
In The Mix: Kentucky, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Nebraska, Mississippi State, and Miami.
Latest: Originally a Louisiana-native, Williams has been a late-bloomer that is slowly starting to garner major attention. The Canes offered only earlier this week, and he could very well replace George on the board if things fall through there. Miami wouldn’t get involved with a JUCO kid unless they were serious, so Williams is going to be a notable target going forward assuming he reciprocates Miami’s interest, although it’s obviously too soon to tell. An interesting wrinkle here is that Williams is former teammates with Miami OL Ousman Traore, who the Canes pulled from Hutchinson last cycle. He’s taking an OV to Kentucky this weekend and he seems pretty wide-open at this point with so many new contenders in his recruitment.
15. RJ Adams, OG, Woodbridge, VA (Woodbridge) (Last Month: NR)
Ht 6-3 | Wt 315 | 247 Composite: 3-Star, #362 Overall
Evaluation: Adams is a mauler in the run game, showing hyper-aggressive traits to drive block his opponents out of their gaps. Athletic enough to get to the second level, lock onto smaller targets, and pave massive space for his runner. Thrives as a move blocker in space. Demonstrates good body positioning against speed rushers and knows how to use his strength to his advantage to throw them off balance.
In The Mix: Penn State, Kentucky, and Miami.
Latest: There’s a few targets that could reasonably go here, but Adams is an interesting case to me. Adams first visited UM in the spring, and it seemed like there might be some traction here; however, Adams committed to Penn State shortly after that. Last month, Adams decommitted, but continued to keep a strong relationship with Penn State, visiting twice for games in the past month. At his visit to Happy Valley this past weekend, a source close to the recruitment told us that he intended to recommit to PSU. However, it seems Penn State is keeping him on ice and is waiting on other targets before accepting his commitment at this point. Instead of waiting around on PSU, we reported yesterday that Adams is calling around to set up official visits and Miami is one school he has been in contact with. Kentucky is one official visit Adams has already taken, but with 4 open slots, there is a good chance Miami gets one of those trips. His relationship with Miami is just starting up again, so it will take some time to know how realistic he is to add to this class, but he is certainly worth monitoring at this point. I will say the vibe I’ve gotten by talking to the source is that PSU is still out in front if they’ll take him.
