08/24 research has begun

I watched the Gates play a few times last year, but can't say I'm close to being an expert on their roster. I know one of the big things to look for is they lost basically their entire OL. With only a month or so remaining, going to be posting about our matchups a lot more and watching all of their games. In the first game I watched, I noticed there were 4 OL from last year's unit who are now gone. Here are the dudes who'll supposedly comprise their new OL unit:

Stone Forsythe - Former 3 star in class of 2016, RS Junior, has some starts sprinkled in over his career, but all at RT.
Brett Heggie - Former 3 star in class of 2016, RS Junior, some starts under his belt from 2017, has been injured on and off for last couple years, did get game action in most of their games last year
Nick Buchanan - Former 3 star in class of 2015, RS Senior, the lone returning starter (12 games) from last year's unit, former 3 star, not the biggest dude you'll see lined up at center.
Noah Banks - Dude's a transfer from Iowa Western College, RS Senior. *** This is apparently Chris Bleich. Banks has a medical issue and may not be cleared. Bleich is also a former 3 star.
Jean Delance or Richard Gouraige - Both former 4 stars. Delance is from class of 2016; Gouraige is from class of 2018. Delance is a former transfer from Texas, played in a handful of games last year. Gouraige took a redshirt last year.

Good chance I missed something since I only now began checking out the matchup with this disgusting program. Nonetheless, this matchup with our DL and blitz packages likely is the #1 or #2 key determinant for 08/24.

On the surface, it's a plus matchup for us because we get Garvin against a dude who's mostly played RT and has minimal career starts on one side, and Hill/Rousseau/Patchan against whoever they choose to settle in to their RT spot. Inside, one thing I'm afraid of early in the season would be big, mauling OL like Wiscy going up against Bethel, Ford, Nesta and company. Luckily for us in this game, I wouldn't necessarily call label their OL as "big and mauling." I'm sure we're likely gonna get hit with some misdirection and hope Blake Baker can clean up some of it, but if you're as excited for 08/24 as I am, this is a key matchup to dig in on.

Our defense held LSU under 300 total yards. Turnovers and failed fourth downs were the killers.

One of the most infuriating moments of Richts tenure (and keep in mind we won the game).

Zuniga will have that same kind of impact of we dont prepare for him. He can be that disruptive. He will be a first rounder.

Also, we wont be able to run on them. Not effectively at least.

On the offense, their TE is pretty good and will make plays. Hes the only one I'd fear.

I dont think their secondary is as hot as they make it out to be. Brevin and Will should have pretty good days.

I hate watching them, which is why I know so little about them. Their mere colors make me nauseous. I wish I could watch their games in black and white.

I don't see why not. We rushed for 191 yds/gm and 5 yds/r last season...and that was with a bunch of jags on the line and a limited playbook.

Also, our defense did better against both LSU and FSU than theirs did.

IDK what you were watching Miami rushing offense was terrible. Stop studying stats and go watch the games. IDK what makes you think there running on FL.

We piled those numbers up on cupcakes. We wont be able to pound it on these dudes.

I'm not really worried about their offense, although I expect Mullen to have a decent plan.

Id be shocked if our defense didnt show out. I'm on record as saying I'll be disappointed if Franks finishes the game.

Watch our game against LSU and then watch Florida's game against LSU...and then come back and tell me their run D was better than ours. Go watch their games against Kentucky and Missouri.

Fact: Florida's run defense was worse than ours was last season. It's not even debatable.

Edit: I read your post wrong. I also disagree that our running game was terrible. It was limited by the OL and the offensive scheme but it was far from terrible.

I'm not even saying we should be able to pound it on them. I'm just saying that the idea that we won't be able to run on them like they're the '85 Bears or something is questionable.

It'll be an FSU like game in that respect. We haven't been able to run on them in forever. And with us either returning with 5, or breaking in a new QB? They will definitely force us to throw the ball.

I think the running game could be better with donaldson, gaynor, and reed inside.

Watch a lot of Arkansas tape. He finds creative ways to get yards without being superior up front. He’ll stretch teams laterally, and uses a ton of jet sweep runs, draws, counters... it’s no longer going to be running inside zone at a brick wall

We inexplicably had Donaldson playing RT against FSU. That left our interior line completely devoid of talent, and it showed.

When was the last time we effectively ran the ball against FSU (or UF)? I will agree that Donaldson should be inside, but I'm not sure it would've made much a difference that game.

That Swamp game in 2002 was freakin beautiful. Power run game with Mcgahee. I don't expect that this year, but I do expect significantly more diverse run game than what we saw last year. If playcalling is about pace and timing, we had to be in the bottom 5% of college last few years.

I would kill for that kind of a beatdown. They were a Top 10 team, too.

I wrote a post on this a couple weeks ago in a thread but here's the recap...

The hype is real for week zero. I was wondering what's the true talent at 2019 UM vs. 2019 UF vs. 2018 LSU in the trenches. The star rankings and experience of the guys in the trenches is normally a great indicator of who will win big rivalry games. And yes, these are projections so you can swap out a guy or two here and there who might start this fall. Without further ado...

2018 LSU
OL - Charles 4 star, Brumfield 4 star, Cushenberry 3 star, Lewis 3 star, Traore 4 star
DL- Lawrence 5 star, Fehoko 4/5 star, Logan high 4 star
Overall a lot of talent, experience, and depth in the trenches in 2018. The starters were mostly 4 stars and several top 100 players. They would be rated the highest of the bunch if we went with the exact point ratings.

2019 UM
OL - Herbert 4 star, Don 4 star, Gaynor 3 star, Reed 4 star, Scaife 4 star
DL- Garvin 4 star, Nesta 4/5 star, Bethel 4 star, Hill 3 star
A close 2nd to LSU would be 2019 UM. The majority of guys are mid tier 4 stars and top 300 players. You could swap out some guys but you get the overall picture. This is a talented team with 5 of 9 guys being multi year starters.

2019 UF
OL - Forsythe low 3 star, Heggie 3 star, Buchanon low 3 star, Banks 3 star, Gouriage 4 star
DL - Zuniga 3 star, Campbell 3 star, Shuler 3 star, Greenard 3 star
Well below these teams is 2019 UF. UF lost a ton of starters and experienced higher rated depth guys. UF has one 4 star player projected to start. The rest of the guys are 3 stars. The center is the only returning starter on the OL. Zuniga is the lone returning starter on the DL.

In conclusion, we should feel really good about this game with the big uglies. They had much more talent and experience across the board last season. It's such a disparity that I would consider this season more of a rebuilding year along the lines for UF.
