08/24 research has begun

I watched the Gates play a few times last year, but can't say I'm close to being an expert on their roster. I know one of the big things to look for is they lost basically their entire OL. With only a month or so remaining, going to be posting about our matchups a lot more and watching all of their games. In the first game I watched, I noticed there were 4 OL from last year's unit who are now gone. Here are the dudes who'll supposedly comprise their new OL unit:

Stone Forsythe - Former 3 star in class of 2016, RS Junior, has some starts sprinkled in over his career, but all at RT.
Brett Heggie - Former 3 star in class of 2016, RS Junior, some starts under his belt from 2017, has been injured on and off for last couple years, did get game action in most of their games last year
Nick Buchanan - Former 3 star in class of 2015, RS Senior, the lone returning starter (12 games) from last year's unit, former 3 star, not the biggest dude you'll see lined up at center.
Noah Banks - Dude's a transfer from Iowa Western College, RS Senior. *** This is apparently Chris Bleich. Banks has a medical issue and may not be cleared. Bleich is also a former 3 star.
Jean Delance or Richard Gouraige - Both former 4 stars. Delance is from class of 2016; Gouraige is from class of 2018. Delance is a former transfer from Texas, played in a handful of games last year. Gouraige took a redshirt last year.

Good chance I missed something since I only now began checking out the matchup with this disgusting program. Nonetheless, this matchup with our DL and blitz packages likely is the #1 or #2 key determinant for 08/24.

On the surface, it's a plus matchup for us because we get Garvin against a dude who's mostly played RT and has minimal career starts on one side, and Hill/Rousseau/Patchan against whoever they choose to settle in to their RT spot. Inside, one thing I'm afraid of early in the season would be big, mauling OL like Wiscy going up against Bethel, Ford, Nesta and company. Luckily for us in this game, I wouldn't necessarily call label their OL as "big and mauling." I'm sure we're likely gonna get hit with some misdirection and hope Blake Baker can clean up some of it, but if you're as excited for 08/24 as I am, this is a key matchup to dig in on.

And do U remember why Gaynor took a redshirt? Wasn't it to build up his strength? I wonder how he's looked in the weight room.

That may have been an issue in 2017 but I though Trayone Gray did a pretty good job of that until Richt went to the well too often.

Guard looks like it’s between reed and Hillery, I like Reed to win that spot. I think that was the plan with gaynor to get stronger and we already had an established starter at center last year too

The tackles. I am ok with the interier as they've either started games last season or played enough to be up to speed (obviously Heggie and Buchanan and to a lesser degree Bleich). I think Stone has loads of potential at LT but boy ole boy it's "welcome to starting in College Football" if there ever is one against UM. I still have even more cause for pause with Delance because there isn't much out there to make me say i'm confident he'll be compentent at RT. Gouriage is still a year away imo. He was getting BULLIED in the spring game by Greeenard and/or Zuniga. Hevesy is a good OL coach but our depth is still a HUGE concern too. HUUUUGE

I like our OL with Scaife and Herbert at the tackles, Donaldson and Reed or Hillary at the guards, and Gaynor at center.

I prefer a 2nd or third year player with upside to a 4th or 5th year player who is just cracking the lineup. If a guy hasn't played by his 4th year then he probably isn't gonna shock the world.

Last year's OL was heavy with upperclassmen and we were soft up the middle because we relied on guys like Jones and Mojoney.

UFs OL resembles our OL last season.

I feel much better about our OL in 2019.

I think that's a question that can only be answered by a coach watching practice over a period of time. If the older player has been putting the time in the weight room, knows his assignments and how to make his reads, and has been developing his technique, he may get a gut feeling that the player is on the cusp. If not, he may bite the bullet and go with the more talented younger player.

Someone who took a redshirt spent his redshirt freshman and sophomore years developing. If development was the intention, the start of year 4 is too early to write them off. But their redshirt junior year, is their make or break year. Hopefully they've got some burn earlier years in blowouts (if we have any, can only play Savannah State so often), to get a read on them so it's not a totally blind shot in the dark. But if they don't solidify their position their junior year they most likely will never.

The key for Blake is this: be yourself.

He can't be Manny anymore than Manolo can be Belichek.

People you admire and want to emulate can inform your decisions/actions, but in the end, you have to stand on your own two feet.

Blake had better be EQUAL TO/BETTER as a DC than Manny by walking his own path.

Greatest example of emulation failure is Josh McDaniels. He so desperately wants to be mini-Belichek that he just constantly fails in about everything he touches. And yes, I'm saying he is very overrated as Patriots OC.

Nothing groundbreaking here as I didn't start to do a deep dive yet, but protecting the ball and having a competent special teams unit (punter) are our keys to winning the game.

Give me +7.5 & under 50.5. And some sort of ML parlay.

Yeah that's odd. I'm not too familiar with betting lines but could it be that Vegas is bullish on the way UF ended their season? They scored 35+ in their last four games (USCe, Idaho, FSU, Michigan).

Really interested In your player-by-player analysis of the gaytors D line vs our O-line.

I'm a believer that just the fact we should have a more competent offensive system, our O line should at least look marginally better. With the skill position players we have I don't even think our O line needs to be dominant, just competent. What say you?

True, and a common story for younger coaches from a 'coaching tree'. They start by trying to be their mentor and usually fail. The successful coaches adapted the best of what they've learned, adding to their own ideas.

Good o line is a huge determining factor in the success of Mullens offense where misdirection runs and qb runs, rpo is heavily used. Our d line should make life difficult for them and force franks to beat us with his arm. If our offense and ST can avoid shooting ourselves in the foot I love our chances to win this game.
