Zero scholarship tight ends a positive?

Who would’ve thought spreading the defense out and getting our playmakers the ball in space(especially JT) and having the QB keep the ball on read options every now and again to keep the D honest would open up the middle of the field for big gains in the running game. It’s not like 95% of the fan base has been screaming to do this all year. Now if we could only use some motion we’d actually look like a modern college offense.

1. Rick, for whatever reason, hates motion. I think he feels it complicates things for the QB

2. The RPO can be VERY effective if the opponent actually has to worry about the pass.

3. I'm a little surprised that Rick went more spread in the VT game. Figured he'd just keep trying to pound the rock without a TE. VT was expecting runs on 1st down (99% of time they would be right), so passing was a bit easier. Miami was in a lot of favorable 2nd down situations.

4. Cam Davis gave Miami a legit homerun threat, which also has gone largely unnoticed. Dallas looks like he is trying out for DT next year and Homer looks a little slower this year than last.

5. Bad OL+slow RB+ inaccurate QB+WR with butterfingers < Bad OL+fast RB+ more accurate QB+WR with butterfingers

That game's a lot closer if Mallory and Jordan didn't get injured; whom both are going to be great TEs. That's very very telling.

You know who else doesn't use TEs?

This is the part of my fan-fic where, after losing his TEs, Mark Richt finds out he was separated at birth from his evil fraternal twin, Mike Leach. Richt changes his name to Mark Leach, but wants to show his wayward brother how to win as a man of the cloth. Mark Leach invents and implements the "Christian Air Raid" offense, and Miami never loses another game.

Couldn’t agree anymore. It’s sickening that that’s what it took to see the type of offense we should’ve been running all along. Virginia, BC AND GT have no shot beating us if we went sidelong to sideline with our guys in space and then gashed them up the middle. And Cam Davis just now getting carries shows that we have guys on this team that are more talented than some guys who are playing and not getting the opportunity to showcase their skills. Very frustrating year.

If this were a blessing and a glimpse of what the spread could do for the program, it would be lost on Richt. The spread wasn't run 30 years ago, after all. With Richt, it's not about adapting to the talents of the players, it's all about the players adapting their games to the "talents" of the OC.

90% of our plays carry a TE this season so... ummm... I guess it's OK... He'll learn, he's a young coach yet...

Richt postgame said his gameplan was thrown out the window when both TE’s went out. Should tell you all you need to know about his gameplans.

It was actually a good game plan considering BJ and Mallory did damage when the ball was thrown to them (outside of the bad pass that led to Mallory's injury ofcourse). He probably wanted to get the LB/S to play horizontal and worry too much about the TE's before getting the run game going. Which is essentially what ended up happening when the TEs got injured and we threw more bubbles / screens.

On a side note. Was it last year or 2016? When we had injuries to our offensive line that forced Searles to change the lineup and our OL actually played better.

That’s not true we had something like 15 yards on 8 carries to start the game. That’s not a good game plan against a defense like that. Not even going to mention we opened up calling a timeout before our first snap on offense. The whole offensive staff needs to be blown up.

I've been preaching this for a while! By including TE's in trenches, it attracts more defenders in the box - for the OL & backs to account for. And with all of the apparent bocking issues we have with diagnosing the defenses, it makes things worse for us...

It's a numbers game, if you spread a team out, we have 5 OL to pickup 4 guys in a 4-3 scheme, for instance....

A QB can easily see what the defense is doing, and play chess from there.

It was 2016 but it was the staff getting tired of Linder being shoved into Kaaya's face on every down that prompted the move.

Man.. what? It wasn't a good game plan to set up or try to force the running game against a defense that gave up 492 (13.7 YPC) rushing yards to Pitt the week prior?
VT Gave up over 200 yards rushing for 4 straight weeks. You think a better game plan would've been a vertical passing game with a RS Fresh QB in his 2nd road start?
Their run defense is ranked 107th, their pass defense is actually much better at 67th lol

I’ve been saying the ol we have is finesse, going more spread without te’s can’t hurt

They can’t manhandle anyone.

Use the field and space instead of bodies, it’s not like our te’s are road graders right now. It’s never made sense to try to maul people.

It definitely simplifies things. The reasoning behind using a TE is that it forces a defender into the box to help in run support. Ideally, you can then take advantage of the mismatch of having a run defending linebacker against a taller, more athletic tight end. Also one extra defender in the box means one less guy in coverage downfield, so your receivers should be able to get open easier. However, when your offensive line can't block 4 guys with 5, even if the tight end nails his blocking assignment, you're not going to be able to run the ball well unless the defense is way out of position.
